The lads wrap up their "Gettin' Medieval" March theme as they dive into the film, The Last Duel. Ridley Scott helms a triple-penned screenplay from Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Nicole Holofcener. The historical backdrop is the 100 Years War (circa 1370) between France and England, but the story focuses on three people: Jean de Carrouges, Jacques Le Gris, and Marguerite de Thibouville, and a serious crime that leads to the titular Last Duel... Based on actual events, the film unravels long-held assumptions about France's last sanctioned duel between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris, two friends turned bitter rivals.Carrouges is a respected knight known for his bravery and skill on the battlefield. In 1386, Marguerite de Carrouges accused Jacques le Gris of having raped her, and though the French Parliament could not come to an agreement as to whether or not le Gris was guilty, we know that he was, because Marguerite's husband Jean killed le Gris in a trial by combat, so that's settled. Although le Gris' descendants would keep trying to convince everybody that actually somebody else raped her. The evidence for this was either nonexistent or unconvincing. The case is currently known both because of the 2004 book The Last Duel, by Eric Jager, which was then made into a 2021 film, The Last Duel, directed by Ridley Scott. We discuss the historical record of the crime and the trials, and Michelle discusses the film (Spoiler Alerts!), which, as usual, she has a lot of opinions about. Oh, and by the way, it wasn't actually the last French judicial duel. Near the end though, and the title is great!
This month Josh, Kyle and Lucas are joined by Justin as they cover The Last Duel (2021) Based on the true story of France's last trial by combat in the Middle Ages. Knight Jean de Carrouges challenges his former friend Jacques Le Gris to a duel after Jean's wife Marguerite accuses Le Gris of rape. Told in multiple "Rashomon-style" points of view. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/play-some-video-games/message
The Sword Guy Podcast, episode 97 Dr Ariella Elema is a finder of the forgotten, the hidden and the obscure. She's an academic and archivist and an armizare practitioner in Toronto. Her Ph.D. thesis, Trial by Battle in France and England, should give you some clue as to why I invited her on the show. But it also won the Canadian Society of Medievalists' Leonard Boyle dissertation prize, which is very impressive. In our conversation we talk about trial by combat, trial by ordeal, and the film, The Last Duel. Was it actually the last duel? There are some fascinating insights from Ariella on how a trial by combat would come about, who got to participate in such trials, and how they didn't necessarily end with any fighting taking place. You need to listen to hear Guy's take on the German version of the trials: “It's like medieval, gimp-suited, mud wrestling, basically.” Here are some images of the Baculus Cornutus: Alençon, Bibliothèque municipale MS 96, folio 63v. From the second half of the twelfth century. British Library, Smithfield Decretals, MS Royal 10 E IV, folio 96v (detail). Circa 1300-1340. York Minster Cathedral, Saint William Window, Corpus vitrearum medii aevi no. 010564. Circa 1414. Here is a video lecture Ariella did for Middle Ages for Educators, called Anatomy of a Duel, about the case of Jean de Carrouges versus Jacques Le Gris, a lawsuit that occurred in Paris in 1386. It's the subject of the book The Last Duel by Eric Jager, and also of the movie The Last Duel directed by Ridley Scott. This will spoil the movie for you. (Please note, it's a discussion of a prosecution for rape and some fairly graphic violence.) https://youtu.be/kxQa1Su-0F4 Ariella is on Twitter at: https://twitter.com/ariellaelema For more information about the host Guy Windsor and his work, as well as transcriptions of all the episodes, check out his website at https://swordschool.com/podcast And to support the show, come join the Patrons at https://www.patreon.com/theswordguy
Director Ridley Scott has delivered some truly awesome historical epics in the form of Gladiator (2000) and Kingdom of Heaven (2005). At the same time, we've gotten a few stinkers like 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992) and Robin Hood (2010). Does his latest period piece The Last Duel (2021) deliver the goods? Jason Furie and Adam Roth give their full review and overall impressions. Were the millennials right to avoid this one in theatres? Visit Website | Join Newsletter | Support | Facebook | Instagram
In this episode, Richard explains why there are so few movies set in the Middle Ages that are historically accurate, and gives examples of a good film (Eric Rohmer's "Perceval le Gallois"; a bad film, Ridley Scott's "The Kingdom of Heaven"; and a not so bad medieval film, Ridley Scott's most recent blockbuster, "The Last Duel." Richard and Carol devote most of the podcast to discussing what is historical and what is anachronistic about the last, as it is the most recent medieval blockbuster and is currently streaming on HBO. For those who haven't seen it, "The Last Duel" recounts the true story of a trial by combat that took place in Paris in 1387 to determine guilt or innocence in a case of rape. Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris were friends but as the latter rose in wealth and status at the expense of the former, friendship turned to animosity. Carrouges' resentment against his more cultured and successful rival turns deadly when Carrouges's wife, Marguerite, accuses Le Gris of raping her. Knowing that Le Gris has the protection of the local count, their mutual lord, Carrouges seeks to vindicate his and his wife's honor through a judicial duel to the death. Like the Japanese film, "Rashomon," also about a rape, the story is told and retold from the viewpoints of each of the three main characters. Richard briefly explains why as a historian he despises the movie "The Kingdom of Heaven." (More on that in a future episode on the Crusades.) Finally, Richard explains why "Perceval le Gallois," a movie that almost derailed the career of the famed French director Eric Rohmer, is the only fully "medieval" movie that Richard has ever seen.....and Carol ponders how a film that she found unwatchable got an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Following her brutal attack at the hands of the popular and well liked Jacques Le Gris, Marguerite de Carrougues had a choice… remain silent or speak the truth. She chose to speak up. What would follow would be a sensational court case, culminating in a trial by combat between Le Gris and her husband (and champion) Jean de Carrougues on December 29, 1386. The events surrounding this case are still discussed and debated to this day. It was even recently made into a hollywood film (The Last Duel). But beneath the legends and the rumors, still lies the steadfast account of Marguerite herself. TW: Sexual assault, rape, gore
Content Warning: This episode contains very strong language about violence, rape, and sexual assault. Listener discretion is advised. Madeline and Sharon just watched The Last Duel on Amazon Prime because they had heard about the interesting three perspective view of a medieval rape. It's part GOT wannabe and feminist view of rape (kind of but maybe not really) movie written by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck (who are both in it) and Nicole Holefcener (who wrote one of Sharon's favorite movies, Lovely and Amazing. There are many spoilers in this discussion but the co-hosts agree that their discussion is a lot more interesting than the superficial reviews of the movie by the NYT or Guardian. They conclude there are some quintessential problems and questions raised by the middle perspective of Jacques Le Gris, played by Adam Driver. And Jody Comer (All About Eve) is fabulous. #rape #thelastduel #mattdamon

So dramatisch beginnt Ridley Scotts neuester Film, ‚The Last Duel‘ mit Starbesetzung. The story of last Judicial Fight to the death in 1386 France might be the last Hollywood Blockbuster from Ridley Scott, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Jodie Comer, and Adam Driver, but the original story itself is one that is truly for the ages. Knight Jean de Carrouges squared off in a duel against squire Jacques Le Gris. Carrouges had accused Le Gris of raping his wife Marguerite de Carrouges. It is a tale of Ego and Revenge, but the pure truth will never be known even 750 years later. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/deeploretv/support

The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat by Eric Jager - The Last Duel Movie The gripping true story of the duel to end all duels in medieval France as a resolute knight defends his wife's honor against the man she accuses of a heinous crime In the midst of the devastating Hundred Years' War between France and England, Jean de Carrouges, a Norman knight fresh from combat in Scotland, returns home to yet another deadly threat. His wife, Marguerite, has accused squire Jacques Le Gris of rape. A deadlocked court decrees a trial by combat between the two men that will also leave Marguerite's fate in the balance. For if her husband loses the duel, she will be put to death as a false accuser. While enemy troops pillage the land, and rebellion and plague threaten the lives of all, Carrouges and Le Gris meet in full armor on a walled field in Paris. What follows is the final duel ever authorized by the Parlement of Paris, a fierce fight with lance, sword, and dagger before a massive crowd that includes the teenage King Charles VI, during which both combatants are wounded—but only one fatally. Based on extensive research in Normandy and Paris, The Last Duel brings to life a colorful, turbulent age and three unforgettable characters caught in a fatal triangle of crime, scandal, and revenge. The Last Duel is at once a moving human drama, a captivating true crime story, and an engrossing work of historical intrigue with themes that echo powerfully centuries later.
Schwertgeflüster - Der HEMA Podcast. Kampfkunst trifft Geschichte.

What if a legal trial was also a battle to the death? In this episode, we look at the strange phenomenon of the judicial duel, in which a plaintiff and defendant would try to kill each other to win a court case. In the “last duel” of medieval France, one man made his fight for justice into a literal fight, and used his weapons to prove that God was on his side. Content notes: This episode is about a trial for violent rape. It contains discussion of some of the incorrect assumptions that medieval doctors had about rape and conception. It also contains descriptions of the deaths of animals. Sources and show notes at this link
