The Texas Longhorns have another key piece to replace on the defense, with Jaylan Ford vacating middle linebacker spot after two of the most productive years in recent history. In his wake is one of the top linebacker prospects the state of Texas has produced in years with Anthony Hill and sixth-year senior David Gbenda. Can the combination of elite talent and tenure hold things down at the most important spot in Pete Kwiatkowski's defense? How will the young players factor in to the plans?
Eric Henry, a Texas Longhorns beat writer for 247 Sports, joined Mike and Charlie. Henry evaluated Jaylan Ford, the Saints' fifth-round pick out of Texas in the 2024 NFL Draft. He broke down Texas & Oklahoma's official entrance to the SEC. Henry also recapped the drama surrounding Texas' baseball coaching change.
Mike and Charlie reviewed Thatcher Hurd's decision to enter the transfer portal. They discussed the Cavaliers' decision to extend star G Donovan Mitchell, explaining how it impacts the Pelicans. Mike gave his breakout candidates on the Saints' 2024 roster. Eric Henry, a Texas Longhorns beat writer for 247 Sports, joined Mike and Charlie. The New Orleans Saints have a busy linebacker room with Demario Davis leading the way, and Jaylan Ford adds a special and invaluable element of the game to the position. The sixth-round NFL Draft prospect brings a remarkably high IQ to the team that everyone including Pete Werner and Willie Gay can benefit from if Ford is ever called into action.A premier communicator, Ford could go a long way in his development over time. But expectations about him should be about what he can achieve as his own player, not how he could be like someone else. Ford's speed will be questioned. But his processing ability could help to close the gap.JOIN SUBTEXT: https://joinsubtext.com/lockedonsaints Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

While Spencer Rattler didn't feel like the right quarterback for the New Orleans Saints in the 2024 NFL Draft, the selection of a late passer is incredibly smart. The South Carolina passer has a ton of qualities the Saints clearly like including his ability to get through progressions, manage adversity, keep a calm head and use his athleticism to make plays. Entering New Orleans behind Derek Carr, Rattler has a chance to develop into a future option at quarterback for the Saints.Day 3 of the 2024 NFL Draft for the Saints was all about development and special teams impact. Bub Means, Jaylan Ford, Khristian Boyd and Josiah Ezirim along with Spencer Rattler project as high-character young players with high ceilings. The undrafted free agency class has a handful of players, headlined by Dallin Holker, that have a legit shot at making the roster. We are coming closer to the season and we are on week two of our defensive previews, bringing us to the linebackers. Jaylan Ford, preseason All-Big 12 defensive player of the year, leads the relatively unproven group that will need to mature fast in order to contribute. David Gbenda and Morice Blackwell have reps but have not reached the heights Texas needs, while elite freshman Anthony Hill has a clear path to development while finding ways to contribute. https://gofund.me/fa85b095 It is the last year for the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners in the Big 12, but while everybody is focusing on their move to the SEC, the Longhorns and Steve Sarkisian are living in the moment. At Big 12 Media Days, Sark, Quinn Ewers, Jaylan Ford, Xavier Worthy, Jahdae Barron and Jordan Whittington gave insight into the offseason, the culture and talent on this Texas Football team, and the expectations for the Longhorns to win their first conference championship since 2009. It's easy to see why there is so much buzz around this program, and why a lot of people think this is the most talent on the roster we've seen since Colt McCoy took his last snaps at the 40. https://gofund.me/fa85b095Depth is needed to win championships at the conference level and I believe that this Texas football team has more than enough depth to win the Big 12 conference this season. The depth also tells you, that this should be a really good football team for years to come, pending coaching and development by Steve Sarkisian and his staff. In this episode, we grade the depth on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Can this Texas team win games without Quinn Ewers on offense or Jaylan Ford on defense? Injuries happen in football, and defensive players rotate quite a bit against these high powered offenses. Texas needs to be able to assert their will no matter what. #HookEmSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!birddogsGo to birddogs.com/LOCKEDONCOLLEGE or enter promo code LOCKEDONCOLLEGE for a free Yeti style tumbler with your order. Locked On Longhorns - Daily Podcast On Texas Longhorns Football & Basketball
The Texas Longhorns Football Team are the overwhelming favorites to win the Big 12 this year, in what will be their final year in the conference before moving on to the SEC. Of course to win a conference championship, you need a ton of talent and a ton of talent the Longhorns have. Yesterday, the Preseason All Big 12 team was announced and five Texas Longhorns made the cut: Xavier Worthy, Byron Murphy II, Jatavion Sanders, Jaylan Ford and Kelvin Banks, Jr. Jalon Daniels was the pick for Offensive Player of the Year, i think that award will go to Quinn Ewers. Jaylan Ford was the pick for Defensive Player of the Year, and rightfully so. Jahdae Barron was once again disrespected by the Big 12 but he'll prove everybody wrong this year. Some interesting competition on the offensive line, as we see Cole Hutson not only battling with DJ Campbell at Guard, but also with Jake Majors at Center. Who will be the best five offensive lineman when the season starts? Jordan Washington becomes the latest player to commit to the 40 acres as well. Locked On Longhorns - Daily Podcast On Texas Longhorns Football & Basketball
It felt like last year, the Texas Longhorns Football Team were snubbed when it came to certain honors in the Big 12, as well as TCU being rewarded when it came to certain honors because they were having an undefeated season. For example, Max Duggan was not a better offensive player than Bijan Robinson last season by any means, but it's hard to argue impact when one school wins 12 games and the other school wins 8. Jaylan Ford was the best defensive player in the conference last year and I'm not sure it was close, but the award went to the Edge Rusher from Kansas State because they were in route to the Big 12 Championship game. This year, Texas is poised to make a lot of noise in their last year in the conference, and most people believe that this is the year they will win the conference championship outright for the first time since 2009. If that is the case, Texas should be well represented at the end of the season when the Big 12 honors are announced. Hook Em Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Texas Longhorns Football Team completed their second spring practice and we continue to hear rave reviews about the most important position on the football field. Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning are both said to have made "Several NFL throws" in the second spring practice, represent talent we have not seen in the Quarterback room in a long time. Players like Jaydon Blue and Cedric Baxter are helping smooth the losses of Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson, and Johntay Cook sounds like the next great Wide Receiver at the University of Texas. Jatavion Sanders is poised to compete for the Mackey Award, given to the best tight end in the country every year and an experienced offensive line led by Kelvin Banks should be better this season. On defense, veterans like Ryan Watts, Jerrin Thompson, Jaylan Ford, and T'vondre Sweat will look to build on one of the best Texas defenses in recent memory, while also mentoring young players like Anthony Hill and Malik Muhammad. The Texas Basketball Team plays Oklahoma State tonight in the second round of the Big 12 tournament. How far can Rodney Terry take this team? Locked On Longhorns - Daily Podcast On Texas Longhorns Football & Basketball
2022 was a season of ups and downs for the Texas Longhorns, which led to marginal improvement and an 8-5 season. At times we saw really impressive efforts like the Alabama and Oklahoma games. Other times there were the letdowns we've become accustomed to for past decade, in games like Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. From an individual perspective we saw more of the same. Quinn Ewers had games last year that more than validated his perfect 247 composite rating coming out of high school. In other games he made mistakes and throws that were characteristic of somebody who had not played football in two years. Xavier Worthy was expected to have a Biletnikoff type season and instead regressed in every statistical category. The defense had dominant efforts against Alabama, Oklahoma and TCU, only allowing 37 points in those three games, but gave up 37 and 41 points to Texas Tech and Oklahoma State respectively. If 2023 is Big 12 Championship or Bust for Steve Sarkisian (It is), then the Longhorns can't afford to have a season of ups and downs. It has to be a season of mostly ups. Jonathan Davis of Locked on Longhorns joins Josh Neighbors of @LockedOnBig12 for our first discussion of what this Texas Longhorns football team needs to do to finally get over the hump in 2023. With Arch Manning coming on campus in 2023, what does this mean for Quinn Ewers and Maalik Murphy at the Quarterback position? With Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson both declaring for the draft, how will the running game look next year? Can the defense look more like the 2022 defense than the 2021 defense next year with players like Jaylan Ford and Jahdae Barron returning? This all remains to be seen. Locked On Longhorns - Daily Podcast On Texas Longhorns Football & Basketball
Quinn Ewers and the Texas Longhorns fall 27-20 to Michael Penix Jr. and the Washington Huskies in the 30th anniversary of the Valero Alamo Bowl. In their first game without Bijan Robinson since 2019, the Texas Longhorns failed to run the ball effectively, and Quinn Ewers (who showed flashes of the superstar coming out of Southlake Carroll) couldn't do enough to lead the Longhorns to victory. Xavier Worthy who has gone from fan favorite to the doghouse, had a catastrophic drop that may have cost the Longhorns the game, and overall this Texas team was just outplayed by a tough Washington team that very well could have competed for a college football playoff spot. On the defensive side, a Texas defense led by Jaylan Ford that was stout against the run allowed Wayne Taulapapa to have one of the best games of his career. They allowed this Washington offense to convert on 57 percent of their third and fourth down conversions, while holding Michael Penix Jr. below his standard offensively. Improving on 5-7 was pretty much a lock based on the talent level on this Texas football team, and Steve Sarkisian being in his second year as the head coach. But 8-5 signifies that a lot of meat was left on the bone. Texas had a chance to beat Alabama, TCU, and Washington and somehow lost all of those games. Texas had a14 point lead against Oklahoma State and Texas Tech and somehow lost both of those games. Even though the offseason ended in a sad manner, we end the show with some Kool-Aid because of course. We talk about some of the positives we saw last night, including the explosiveness from Jonathon Brooks, and the growth and development from Quinn Ewers amongst other things. @Texas Homer joins the show to talk about everything we need to know about what has been good and bad for this Texas Longhorns football team schematically. On the offensive and defensive sides, there has been some good and some bad this season, which has led to a 5-3 record for Texas through 8 games. On the offensive side, what has worked in the passing game between Hudson Card and Quinn Ewers thus far this season? What are the concepts that have allowed playmakers like Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington to make plays in the passing game this year? In the run game, what schemes have allowed Bijan Robinson and Keilan Robinson to be amongst the best in the country in terms of runningbacks? How have the versatile tight ends in Jahleel Billingsley and Ja'Tavion Sanders affected this offense? On the defensive side, this is a team that has vastly improved from 2021. What schematically has worked for the Longhorns on that side of the ball in 2022 that has allowed playmakers like Keondre Coburn, Demarvion Overshown, Jaylan Ford and Ryan Watts to shine this season? On top of that, the Texas Longhorns have a tough matchup against the Kansas State Wildcats tomorrow. On offense, how can Quinn Ewers and Sark attack them to get a tough win on the road? On defense, how can Pete K and Gary Patterson stop Deuce Vaughn and Adrian Martinez or Will Howard? Texas needs this win in the worst way. Let's hope they can get it. The Texas Longhorns put one in the win column for conference play against the West Virginia Mountaineers, avoiding a disastrous start to conference play and keeping their hopes alive for a Big 12 Championship game berth. Hudson Card once again played winning football, finding Xavier Worthy and Ja'Tavion Sanders for big nights, while Barryn Sorrell and Jaylan Ford kept the defense on track. Guess who's back (back back) Back again (back back) Texas is Back (not really) Tell a friend. Hudson Card, Bijan Robinson, Xavier Worthy and JT Sanders were dominant on Saturday en route to a 38-20 win over JT Daniels, CJ Donaldson and the West Virginia Mountaineers. Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns jumped out to a 28-0 lead against West Virginia and although they were outscored 20-10 after that point, the Longhorns did enough early to ensure that game was never in doubt. Sark was really creative as a playcaller utilizing Xavier Worthy all over the field, even at quarterback with a 33 yard touchdown throw to Jatavion Sanders. Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson continued to do Bijan and Roschon things and the explosive tight end, JT Sanders continued to make a strong case for being one of the best tight ends in the country, blocking and receiving wise. On the defensive side, they played fast and sound. This is a defense that had three sacks, four tackles for loss, and 7 pass deflections! Players like Demarvion Overshown, Jaylan Ford, and D'shawn Jamison were dominant on Saturday but really this defense was elite as a whole and have been in their four home games thus far, where the Longhorns are only giving up 17 points a game and haven't allowed more than 20 points to any of their four opponents. I was very vocal that this was a must win game for the Longhorns and win they did, ahead of arguably their biggest game of the season in the Red River Shootout against the Oklahoma Sooners and Brent Venables. With two weeks left before the season kicks off, the Texas Longhorns officially have their QB1. Steve Sarkisian, through the Sports Information Office, made it known that the transfer redshirt freshman, and former Tom Herman pledge, would be suiting up as the starting quarterback when the season kicks off against ULM. As he heads into game preparation as the first-team quarterback, we look back at the journey that brought him to Texas before looking forward to his time as the quarterback. What do we think went into the decision to name him as the starter and what do we hope to see from him this fall? We also continue through our position group preview series, taking a look at the linebackers -- a group that hopes to improve from last year. DeMarvion Overshown leads the group, with emerging junior Jaylan Ford and transfer linebacker Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey joining the group as a transfer from JMU last year. How can an improved linebacker group impact Texas's season outlook overall? On today's show we talk with band Billy Star about how their familial ties brought them together, recording in Chicago at Electric Audio and what to expect in the future. We also speak with South Arlington dancing sensation Jaylan Ford about what motivates him, how he's treated while he is out, the jobs he has gotten and graduating high school! At the end of our interview, the community came together to give Jaylen gifts of money, gift cards and merch of his favorite artists as a graduation gift!
