Set during the Tang Dynasty in China in Chang'an, the capital, the series touches back to the Lotus Palace, a school and home for courtesans. Mingyu is one of the most sought-after courtesans, and she crosses paths with the constable Wu Kaifeng after her protector General Deng has been found murdered. It's hard to convey through a plot summary how well Jeannie Lin builds sexual tension, but like Emma says in the episode, every scene between Mingyu and Kaifeng is charged. Loved this book. The mystery is more baffling the more we think about it and we couldn't care less. Five stars.

Jeannie Lin is so talented and her characters really do come alive on the page. Less trauma than the first book, with more bad guys!

Imperial China might not be our usual romance setting, but we both loved pretty much everything about this book. Be prepared for some heavy subject matter and excellent world building.

Happy lunar new year!  We rang in the Year of the Ox with Butterfly Swords, which was Jeannie Lin's first book.  It won the Golden Heart Award back in 2009 and started her illustrious career. Ai Li is to be married to the powerful and hawt Li Tao, a scheming jiedushi.  When she discovers his treachery and his murder of her brother she escapes to warn her father, the Tang Emperor.  Except her father isn't really all that fussed about it?  She's helped along the way by Ryam, Noted White Guy.  They travel all around China meeting people and running away from people and hitting people with swords, which is delightful. There's really no content to be concerned about in this book  - if you dig action packed historical romances there won't be anything in here that's an unpleasant surprise.

If you've been waiting on pins and needles for a great suggestion for a great new naughty boss romance since our last romance novel face off....sorry, but you'll have to wait even longer. Oops, did we say that out loud? Our wants for this week ended up being a challenge, as it turns out badass female Asian ninja warrior books are a rare niche. Not to mention finding a female billionaire boss romance to pair with it. But like always, L&L found a way to persevere, mostly thanks to our cocktails. Our Lotus Blossom cocktail made a nice pairing for "Butterfly Swords" by Jeannie Lin. In a surprising twist (or maybe not so surprising if you know Kassandra and Ashley's viewpoints on romance novels) our biggest complaint was how dare she go fade to black on us. On the other side of the ring, with terrible odds coming out of the betting pools, is "Sweet Surrendering" by Chelsea M. Cameron. If you were disappointed in lack of kinky office sex in our last bad boss pick, you'll get your fill on this book. Again. And again. And again. And... well, we think you're getting the idea. And if you lost money in the aforementioned betting pool, our Sweet, Sweet Surrendering cocktail will at least help to ease the pain.

Fun fact, Alyssa Cole lives in Martinique, and Kim and Emma’s geography lessons continue. Leah is reading Kiss Me That Way by Laura Trentham and Flirting with Disaster by Victoria Dahl. Emma is reading Hot Dog Taste Test by Lisa Hanawalt—a graphic foodie memoir that is weird and delicious. She also just started Kim & Kim by Magdalene Visaggio, which is a comic about punk rock bounty hunters in space. Kim is reading Love Is Love a graphic anthology written in response to the Orlando shooting curated by Marc Andreyko; an important, but difficult read. All proceeds for the book go to the victims, survivors, and families affected by the Orlando Pulse shooting. Which is to say, everyone should buy this book.
