How does one read the signs of the times? What does it mean to resist? How do we engage faithfully in the struggle? Dietrich Bonhoeffer has achieved iconic status as one who epitomizes what it means to struggle and resist tyranny and fascism and how one acts in faithful witness as a religious and political commitment. Bonhoeffer‘s witness and example is more relevant than ever. In this episode, I am joined by the preeminent historian of the Holocaust and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Dr. Victoria Barnett. Jeffrey Pugh and I got to talk to her multiple times throughout our work for the Rise of Bonhoeffer, and our last conversation was so rich that I couldn't help but share it here. Our discussion focuses on a crucial essay penned by Bonhoeffer in 1942; "After Ten Years" is a succinct and sober reflection and remains one of the best descriptions ever written about what happened to the German people under National Socialism. We also let Vicki demythologize some popular ahistorical attributions around Bonhoeffer's life. Victoria J. Barnett served from 2004-2014 as one of the general editors of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works, the English translation series of Bonhoeffer's complete works. She has lectured and written extensively about the Holocaust, particularly about the role of the German churches. In 2004 she began directing the Programs on Ethics, Religion, and the Holocaust at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum until her retirement. Her published works include Bystanders: Conscience and Complicity during the Holocaust (1999) and For the Soul of the People: Protestant Protest against Hitler (1992). This conversation centers around her translation and significant introduction and historical analysis of Bonhoeffer's "After Ten Years": Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Our Times. In this episode, I am joined by my partner in The Rise of Bonhoeffer, Dr. Jeffrey Pugh, for a profound conversation with theologian, ethicist, and Bonhoeffer scholar Dr. Reggie Williams. The discussion revolves around Dietrich Bonhoeffer's provocative ethical challenge, particularly drawing from his experience in Harlem. In this episode, I am joined by writer and director Todd Komarnicki to discuss his upcoming movie, Bonhoeffer. Komarnicki discusses the grueling yet rewarding process of adapting the complicated and meaningful life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer to the big screen. We delve into Todd's relationship with Bonhoeffer and how Dietrich's story, faith, and historical context create unique cinematic challenges when telling his story in film. In the conversation, Todd addresses the controversy surrounding the film and the legacy of Bonhoeffer, rejecting Metaxas' influence and insisting that Bonhoeffer's witness serves as a challenge to Christian nationalism then and now. Komarnicki shares his thoughts on the importance of integrity, his creative process, and the deeply personal connections that bring the film to life. Join Dr. Jeffrey Pugh & Dr. Tripp Fuller as they delve into the complex life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The story flashes forward to a powerful juxtaposition: on February 1, 1933, two days after Hitler became Chancellor, both men addressed Germany. Hitler promised to restore national pride, while Bonhoeffer warned against creating an idol out of a leader. How did Bonhoeffer come to see the Nazi threat while so many others didn't? This episode begins the story by turning to his early life, his burgeoning critiques of National Socialism, and how his family, education, and travels deeply influenced his evolving theology. Discover how Bonhoeffer's early liberal theological perspectives, grappling with German nationalism, eventually led him to challenge authoritarianism and develop a profound ethical and theological stance against the Nazi regime. Planning, Unity, and Discipline: the Keys to Non-Violent Social Change in the Americas

Maria Belén Garrido, a research lecturer at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador, and Jeffrey Pugh, an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston, lead the Regional Institute for the Study and Practice of Strategic Nonviolent Action in the Americas. The institute provides training, capacity building, and networking opportunities for nonviolent social change activists in Latin America. It teaches that the success of non-violent strategies depends on the crucial “trinity” of planning, unity, and discipline. Garrido and Pugh provide numerous examples of nonviolent movements in Latin America at the local and national levels, from communities declaring themselves "peace zones" in Colombia to worker “slowdown” strikes in Chile under Pinochet. They emphasize being creative with tactics like strikes, boycotts, protests, using art and music, and leveraging media and communication. An ongoing challenge is confronting the rise of authoritarian populism and leaders who try to control narratives and media. Maintaining nonviolent discipline is crucial to avoid playing into the hands of repressive regimes. Building diverse coalitions and identifying strategic pressure points instead of relying solely on mass messaging may be especially important today. “When a great amount of people, especially a diversity of people, in ages and ethnicities, go to the streets, then probably the social distance from the members of the forces that will repress them is lower and narrower,” Garrido observes here. “And this will reduce the amount of repression.” Resources from the Institute can be found at accionnoviolenta.org: the “Relatos de la Resistencia Noviolenta” podcast, blog posts by regional activists, and an online course, one edition of which just got underway in early October 2023.

The author of six books ranging from Barth, religion and science, and the apocalyptic imagination to Bonhoeffer, Pugh's work has focused on Christian complicity in the Holocaust and the lessons that can be applied to instruct future generations. His latest work, a chapter on his reflections while he was participating in the clergy resistance at the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville is found in Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Theology, and Resistance. He and his wife Jan, a retired United Methodist minister, make their home in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dr. Adam Clark is Associate Professor of Theology at Xavier University. He is committed to the idea that theological education in the twenty first century must function as a counter-story. One that equips us to read against the grain of the dominant culture and inspires one to live into the Ignatian dictum of going forth “to set the world on fire.” To this end, Dr. Clark is intentional about pedagogical practices that raise critical consciousness by going beneath surface meanings, unmasking conventional wisdoms and reimagining the good. January 6th 2021 needed a theological debrief. I brought two friends of the pod and recent partners for reading groups, Adam Clark and Jeffrey Pugh. Recently Dr. Pugh and I hosted a Bonhoeffer reading group and Dr. Clark and I put on together on Black Theology. The topics and questions we cover were sent in by the members from these reading groups. If you missed out and want to get the content from the groups, the easiest way is by joining the Homebrewed Community. Dr. Jeffrey C. Pugh recently retired as Maude Sharpe Powell Professor of Religious Studies and Distinguished University Professor from Elon University in North Carolina. He currently serves as co-chair of Black Theology Group at the American Academy of Religion, actively publishes in the area of black theology and black religion and participates in social justice groups at Xavier and in the Cincinnati area. He earned his PhD at Union Theological Seminary in New York where he was mentored by James Cone. Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. "We forget...Before Hitler became our absolute fetish of evil, he was in fact just another politician. Before Hitler was Hitler, he was simply Adolf, the bumbling idiot that the German politicians and aristocracy believed they could manage and control if they allowed him to become Chancellor. Likewise, people generations from now will look back upon us and wonder what moral judgments they would've made had they been in our shoes these past four plus years."For our episode this week- a week that saw seditious rioters, seduced by propaganda and a lie,, storm the Capitol building in Washington DC, we're making available the first session of our online class with Dr. Jeffrey Pugh, Bonhoeffer for Troubled Times. An ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church, Jeffrey was the Maude Sharpe Powell Professor of Religious Studies at Elon University. Among other books, he's the author of Religionless Christianity: Dietrich Bonhoeffer for Troubled Times.

This is a special episode where I share an audio version of my written response to Joerg Rieger's book Jesus vs Caesar. If you haven't read the book I imagine you can still follow along, especially if you listened to my recent interview with Rieger about it HERE. The main reason I am sharing this is to lure you to join myself and friend of the pod Grace Ji-Sun Kim as we engage Rieger in a public conversation about the book. It is part of the "Christ Among the Disciplines" online conference. PS. There's also a session toward the end of the event on my new book Divine Self-Investment featuring four friends of the pod and scholars more brilliant than me - Donna Bowman, Jeffrey Pugh, Jacob Erickson, and Tom Oord. It’s his expertise on Bonhoeffer we turn to in this episode, asking him to reflect on the border crisis, how Christians are to discern when they’re in a “biblical moment” that calls for witness and resistance, the need for another Barmen-type confession.

Today is your lucky day! After this podcast episode you will be prepared for the world after you've been left behind. Dr. Jeffrey Pugh is back on the podcast and spitting some theological game about his book in the Homebrewed Christianity Guide Series on THE END. That's right we are going to talk dispensationalism, millennialism, rapture, charts, zionism, Trump, Revelation, the Apocalypse, and other eschatological goodies. When you get done you are gonna want to get his book.  Dr. Pugh is the professor of religious studies at Elon University and he has been on the podcast two other times. Once we discussed Bonhoeffer's Religionless Christianity and the Devil's blogging efforts.  People still believe that Jesus is returning to earth . . . and soon! Like Jesus' the first followers, millions of Christians hold fast to the idea that we are living in the last days, yet here we are, two thousand years later, still waiting. In The Homebrewed Christianity Guide to the End Times Jeffrey C. Pugh recounts his own brief sojourn in an apocalyptic cult. Looking back now, as a respected professor of theology, he tackles how Christianity in general, and the evangelical world in particular, have been captivated by the theological innovation known as Dispensationalism that emerged in the nineteenth century. The embrace of this idea has influenced millions, leading to such cultural phenomena as the Left Behind books and movies, and Christian Zionism. But Pugh argues that the belief in the imminent return of Christ has in fact been harmful to Christian engagement with the world, and he builds this argument on a thorough and occasionally sassy reading of biblical texts and church history. Book Endorsements... "Of course, we live in a dangerous world, but Jeffrey C. Pugh helps us see how correct Christian eschatological convictions help us avoid getting the world wrong. Pugh writes with a clarity that makes the book available to theologian and non-theologian alike." --Stanley Hauerwas, Duke University "It was better than Cats; I'd read it again." --Third Horseman of the Apocalypse "Jeffrey C. Pugh journeys with us through the historical significance of the End Times instead of feeding our fears. He offers a hopeful discovery of a new narrative—one in which we can laugh at ourselves, question, co-create, and redeem the world with God, and do it with love." --Amy Piatt, Senior Pastor, First Christian Church, Portland Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community.
