Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand Have you ever looked at what God was asking of you and thought, "I simply don't have enough"? In Episode 157 of 2 Minute Disciple, we meditate on Mark 6:35–44, one of Jesus' most beloved miracles—the feeding of the five thousand. Faced with a hungry crowd in a remote place, the disciples see only scarcity. Their resources are painfully inadequate: five loaves and two fish for thousands of people. The situation seems impossible. But Jesus doesn't ask them to create more food. He asks them to bring Him what they already have. What follows is a powerful reminder that the kingdom of God does not operate according to human calculations. Jesus takes what seems insufficient, blesses it, breaks it, and multiplies it until everyone is satisfied—and there is still more left over. This miracle reveals a truth many of us need to hear: God is not asking us to provide the multiplication. He is asking us for the offering. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why Jesus often begins with what we already have • The difference between our responsibility and God's responsibility • How feelings of insufficiency can become opportunities for faith • What the feeding of the five thousand teaches us about kingdom work • A practical way to surrender your limitations to Jesus today Scripture Mark 6:35–44 (NLT) Reflection Question What small, seemingly insufficient thing am I holding back from Jesus because it doesn't seem like enough—that He might be asking me simply to place in His hands? Today's Spiritual Practice Identify one area of your life where you feel inadequate, overwhelmed, or under-resourced. Instead of waiting until you feel ready, capable, or sufficient, bring that area to Jesus in prayer today. Offer Him your "five loaves and two fish." Then take the next faithful step and trust Him with the results. Pray: "Jesus, this is what I have. It doesn't feel like enough—but I place it in Your hands anyway. You fed five thousand with less than this. I trust You with my insufficiency. Multiply what I bring You for Your glory." I am continuing my series on the messages I delivered at various camp chapels this summer. Throughout the season, I shared stories from Jesus' life and explored what it means to be a disciple. This week, we focus on the idea that being a disciple requires us to rely on Jesus to meet all of our needs. Drawing from the story of the feeding of the 5,000 found in the gospels, we observe how Jesus, upon learning about the death of His friend John the Baptist, was moved by grief. Despite His sorrow, He saw the people as sheep without a shepherd and chose to address their spiritual and physical needs. Our text today is Mark 6:35-44: And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men. — Mark 6:35-44 The sun was setting. The crowd was huge. And the disciples were doing the math. After a few quick calculations, they concluded that there was not enough. Enough time. Enough money. Enough food. It's a rational thought about the necessary rations. Five thousand men, not counting women and children. In a remote location. But Jesus challenges their rational logic with a divine line: “You give them something to eat.” And their scarcity mentality kicks in. “Are we supposed to spend two hundred denarii on bread?” “We only have five loaves and two fish.” The disciples only perceived natural impossibilities. Jesus perceived spiritual possibilities. Scarcity sees lack—but faith sees the Lord. Jesus tells them to organize the crowd. He blesses the bread. He breaks the fish. What wasn't enough in their hands becomes more than enough in his. “And they all ate and were satisfied.” Every need was met. No one went hungry. It cost nothing. They traveled nowhere. And there were twelve baskets of leftovers. This is what happens when we surrender scarcity to the Savior. Too many believers live day-by-day with a scarcity mentality. Not enough time. Not enough talent. Not enough experience. Not enough influence. Not enough faith. And so we play it safe. We hold back. We tell Jesus to “send them/it away.” However, Jesus never operates from a place of scarcity or lack. He's not concerned about how much you have—he's asking if you'll have faith, bring what you have, and give it to him. Because what feels insufficient to us becomes sufficient in Jesus's hands. So stop living with a scarcity mentality. Live by faith. Bring what you have. Let Jesus multiply and make it more than enough. ASK THIS: Why do you think the disciples focused on what they didn't have? What does this story teach us about God's provision? Where are you tempted to say, “It's not enough”? What would it look like to trust Jesus with that area today? DO THIS: Identify one area where you've been operating from a scarcity mindset. Write it down, bring it to Jesus in prayer, and trust Him to do more than you can see. PRAY THIS: Jesus, I confess I've been focused on what I lack. Today I choose to bring what I have to you. On Sunday we are preaching through Luke 9:10-17 where Jesus takes a little bread and a little fish and turns it into a LOT of bread and a LOT of fish, and 5,000 people eat to their fill and then have leftovers. What is happening here? Does Jesus have a magic wand or is this something else? How do 5 loaves and 2 fish feed 5,000 or more people? What is the point of this?On Sunday we get to feast on this miracle text and ponder the wonders of Jesus.
The people tried to make Jesus a worldly king… and he withdrew. But when they came to arrest and kill him… he didn't. He wants to be King of your life, if you will receive him!
God can fill baskets full of leftovers with whatever offerings you bring to him. You don't have to bring much… but give him your time, your talents, your resources… and see what how he multiplies it to bless many!
Jesus pauses to pray over his food. What an example for us! Pause, reflect on God's goodness, and give thanks when you enjoy God's blessings… and don't forget to share your blessings with others.
When Jesus tested Philip, it wasn't to shame him, but to help him grow. How might Jesus be "testing" you, for your growth, right now?

Starting at chapter one, in verse six of the book of john. It says, After this, Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias, and a large crowd was following him because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews was at hand, lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming towards him, Jesus said, to fill up, where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat? Now he said this to test him, for he knew himself what he would do, Philip answered, 200, denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon, Peter's brother said to him, there's a boy here, who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many? Jesus said, Have the people sit down, now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down about 5000, and number, Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated, so also the fish as much as they wanted. And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples gather up the leftover fragments that nothing may be lost. S o they gathered them up, filled 12 baskets, with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, this is indeed the prophet who has come into the world, perceiving that they were about to come and take him by forced to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. One of the things I want to encourage you with is that Jesus certainly cares about our spiritual being. But in this case, he was the one that mentioned, how are we going to feed all these people? Now he even says here that he knew what the answer was. But he said that to His disciples, just to kind of get them to think and to realize what was about to happen. One of the things I want to share is that we know, Jesus cares about our spiritual needs. Another thing I want to point out here is that Jesus is more powerful regardless of the situation that you're in. I just want to remind you, regardless of where you're at, regardless of what you're going through, God is bigger than our problems, focus on him. And he will see us through. And finally, along those same lines, I just want to say if we stay close to Jesus, we know he'll care for us. Friends, I want to encourage you, wherever you're at today, we have people listening to this podcast from all over the world. And each of us live in different cultures in different situations and circumstances. But I want to tell you, hold on to Jesus. If you don't know Jesus as your Savior, I would encourage you find a Bible to find a Bible believing church and talk to someone. Read through the book of John, you'll see how much Jesus loves you how much God cares for you. And as you begin to focus on him, the things of this world will see much smaller, and you'll find that God does provide I want to thank you for listening today. Aside from the events of Holy Week (the Resurrection in particular), the Miracle of feeding 5000 people is the only other miracle that is documented in all four Gospels! So it's kinda of a Big Deal! In these unprecedented times, how much do we trust Jesus that He will provide for all our needs? In whatever difficulty we have, how much do we trust Him that he has already provided a way out? Food for thought.
