In this cross-promotion episode of Jaw Talk, I was interviewed by Joanna Scott with the Story Project podcast about my journey into dentistry, which is deeply influenced by a rich family heritage in the field. Despite this background, I initially pursued a career in physical therapy. However, after feeling unfulfilled, I decided to pivot and enter dentistry, which allowed me to bring a unique dual perspective to patient care.My professional evolution has since shifted toward a holistic dental approach, focusing on early detection and prevention. I utilize the latest advancements in digital dentistry and imaging technology to identify issues like TMJ early on, with the goal of transforming children's lives through awareness and proactive intervention.I am passionate about treating each patient like family and guiding them toward optimal health resources. My upcoming initiative to unite women in dentistry reflects my commitment to fostering collaboration and empowerment within the dental community, ensuring a brighter future for dental healthcare. We talk about:My Journey to DentistryWake Surfing and Life Outside DentistryThe Power of Family Heritage in HealthcareHolistic Approach to Dental HealthUpcoming Women in Dentistry EventConnect with Joanna Scott here:https://www.joannascott.com/storyprojecthttps://www.facebook.com/joannafscottConnect with Tiffany here:Interdisciplinary Perspectives Uniting Women in Dentistry: https://tmdcollective.com/ipuwd/Courses: https://www.tmdcollective.com/courseshttps://www.instagram.com/tmd.collective/Support the Show: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2170917/supportSupport the Show.

Even with a broad interest in practice ownership, giant student debt is negatively influencing future practice ownership. This was the summarized conclusion from a recent cross-sectional study in the AAPD journal evaluating practice ownership intentions and educational debt. On today's solo episode, I wanted to do a quick review of this article and share my thoughts. I receive inquiries several times a week from young pediatric dentists who express interest in starting a practice. I can tell you first hand that there is a lot of interest in the subject. Some dentists commit and make it happen right away, and for others it takes more time due to additional barriers. Even with the stresses of running a business, I still encourage practice ownership and I think this article does a great job shedding some light on restrictions that come with it. Shoutout to Dr. William Alexander, Dr. Joel Berg, Dr. JoAnna Scott, Dr. Roger Sanger, and Dr. Zheng Xu on publishing this study. The study is title, "Practice Ownership Intentions of Pediatric Dentistry Residents and the Influence of Educational Debt." Pediatric Dentistry V 44, No 1. Jan/Feb 2022.

Joanna Scott is the author of 12 works of fiction, including Arrogance, a PEN/Faulkner finalist; and The Manikin, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Her awards include a MacArthur Fellowship, a Guggenheim fellowship, and the Rosenthal Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The episode explores the line between fact and fantasy, between what’s known, forgotten, or less known than characters in these short stories may believe. The degree to which we’re all limited by our sense of perspective is a related theme here as Scott argues, aptly enough, that a story is always in the first-person at some level because it’s an act of make-belief in a world without certainty. Among other writers invoked in this session were Harold Pinter and his ability to bring characters from distinctively different backgrounds into conflict, Marcel Proust for his attention to detail (a writerly trait Scott shares), and finally Jorge Borges for the ability to show a mind at play with the kind of paradoxes that Scott likewise relishes. In the 3rd episode of Season 2, I talk with a former coworker and friend, Joanna Scott, who has had a great career in Corporate Finance. Joanna's career story starts when she was hit by car while training as a member of the Central Michigan University distance running team and how that event put her on a path to study Business/Finance at Eastern Michigan University. She talks about why Finance is an excellent field for her, and how it has created a number of opportunities to learn new businesses and different functions with a corporate organization. Joanna has learned a lot in her career, like taking a public company private, changing a fiscal year of an organization, and the process of spinning off a business. She also talks about the importance of stepping back a bit, finding more time for life and working less. Like other guests, Joanna has experienced a lot of success by staying close to her network and jumping at opportunities, while also recognizing when it might be time to find a new role. A great conversation all around.

This week, I brought on Joshua and Joanna Scott from Studio 88 to talk more about niches. They have built an incredible marketing agency that is focused on the niche of serving dentists. I got to work on a project with them last year and it was cool to see the work that they do in this unique space. A lot of us struggle with niching down and they’ve done well in that, so I knew they would have a lot of great stuff to share with us.   In the episode, we talk about: 1. Having a “real” business and how they built theirs around a personal brand 2. The process of “niching down” 3. The art of working together as a couple 4. How high-end companies are transitioning to the personal brand world 5. Post-COVID predictions for dentistry 6. Their prep process for working with clients   I hope that Joshua and Joanna’s real-life story helps you realize what can happen if you niche down. Your business and niche may transition later on, but focusing on one can lead to greater success in your personal brand.   Resources: Joshua’s Instagram Joanna’s Instagram Studio 88’s Website   Connect with Mike: https://mikekim.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/mikekimtv/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikekimtv Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/mikekimtv/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/mikekimtv   *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment. Freak Weather (Massachusetts Press) From a nurse who sees a rattlesnake in the pediatric ICU to an animal control officer convinced she’s found her abducted daughter in the house of a dog hoarder, the thirteen stories in Freak Weather are as unpredictable as the atmospheric changes that give this collection its name. With dark and raucous humor, Mary Kuryla creates female characters who, at times, combine a violent urgency with lack of introspection as they struggle to get out from under the thumb of a perceived authority. The intricate language is inseparable from the narrator’s conviction; the characters lie with such bravado they’re soon tangled up in their own webs. This brand of romanticism in a female character is little tolerated, and Freak Weather’s mission—Kuryla’s artistic mission overall—is to scratch at the intolerable. Call it bad instructions for moralbehavior. Mary Kuryla has been awarded the Pushcart Prize and the Glimmer Train Short Fiction Prize. Several of the stories in this collection have been adapted into award-winning films that premiered at the Sundance, London, Edinburgh, and Toronto International film festivals. Praise for Freak Weather “There is a feral quality to some of these stories, an attitude that is truly startling. The language is perfectly matched to the not-so- conflicted women living off venison, weed, and their husband’s paychecks. The territory here is sometimes disturbing; the treatment of these people who are in over their heads is always both tough and surprisingly moving. The ‘action’ resides as much in the brisk, fresh language as in what these people conjure in a crisis. Ultimately, the author delivers stories unlike anyone else’s.”—Amy Hempel, Grace Paley Prize in Short Fiction judge and author of The Dog of the Marriage: Stories “This is what they mean by muscular prose, but with lithe muscles, quick and bright, and dueling senses of swagger and grimness. A striking and satisfying debut.”—Aimee Bender, author of The Color Master: Stories "What a memorable, witty, imaginative collection this is, beautifully modulated, extravagant yet precise. Each story is startling and expertly hewn, with a perfect balance of toughness and whimsy.”—Joanna Scott, author of De Potter’s Grand Tour “A powerful collection of stories about women who are unapologetically themselves—often struggling, sometimes drunk, sometimes irresponsible, but in all cases painfully human and alive. Each of these pieces opens a window onto a life and then, before we have time to explain to ourselves how we’re not like that, abruptly slams it shut, leaving us exquisitely off balance.”—Brian Evenson, author of The Warren “There is much beguiling strangeness in the pages of Freak Weather, but there are no strangers: you know all of these people. They're the slightly scary neighbors, the folks who talk a little too loudly in the convenience store, the children who act older than they should. You've wanted to know about their lives, and now  they're telling you everything. Simultaneously appalling and gorgeous.”—Pinckney Benedict, author of Miracle Boy & Other Stories Mary Kuryla’s collection Freak Weather: Stories was selected by Amy Hempel for the 2016 AWP Grace Paley Prize in Short Fiction. She has been the recipient of The Pushcart Prize, as well as the Glimmer Train Very Short Fiction Prize. Her stories have appeared in Epoch, Shenandoah, Denver Quarterly, Witness, Greensboro Review, Pleiades, The New Orleans Review, The Normal School and Alaska Quarterly Review, among others. She is the author, with Eugene Yelchin, of The Heart of the Snowman, Ghost Files: The Haunting Truth, and The Next Door Bear for Harper Children’s Books. Her award-winning shorts and feature films have premiered at Sundance and Toronto. She has written screen adaptations for United Artists and MGM. She teaches screenwriting and media studies at Loyola Marymount University and Emerson, Los Angeles. Award-winning actress Brenda Wehle has appeared in film and TV (American Beauty, Woman Walks Ahead), and worked extensively in New York, most recently on Broadway in The Crucible. She is currently in Mary Jane at the New York Theatre Workshop. A member of the Guthrie Theater Acting Company, she appeared in over 35 productions.

Broken Sleep (Other Press)Spanning 1940s to 2020s America and told with contagious vivacity, Broken Sleep knits the stories of four distinctly memorable characters into an indelible portrait of American culture that is at once sweeping, irreverent, and heartbreaking. When everyman Moses Teumer discovers that he has an aggressive form of leukemia, his search for a donor who can save him sets off a wild chain of events as he discovers that the woman who raised him is not his birth mother. Encompassing a Pynchon-esque saga of rock music, sex, drugs, art, and politics, this novel is an unforgettable examination of the secrets we keep and the risks we take in the name of commandeering our own destinies. After his diagnosis, Moses is led to his real mother, Salome Savant, a rebellious avant-garde artist who has spent her life in and out of a mental health facility. Salome’s son and Moses’s half-brother is Alchemy Savant, the mercurial front man of the world-renowned rock band The Insatiables. As Moses’s fate intertwines with Salome and Alchemy’s, the shocking secrets of his lineage and his Jewish identity are revealed. As Moses begins to lose his grip on the life he once thought he had, Alchemy abandons music to launch a political campaign to revolutionize 2020s America. Joining these characters is Ambitious Mindswallow, aka Ricky McFinn, who journeys from juvenile delinquency in Queens to being The Insatiables’ bassist and Alchemy’s Sancho Panza, along with an unforgettable constellation of artists, musicians, movie stars, and creatives who populate the twisted terrain of the Teumer and Savant family’s pasts and futures. As each of Bauman’s characters comes closer to understanding their identity and the truth about their origins, the reader is gripped by this portrait of life lived to the fullest.  A colorful and provocative tale that takes the reader from Los Angeles to NYC to London to Brazil, Broken Sleep stuns with its propulsive energy and its hilarious and poignant observations about myth-making, the secrets we keep from one another, and how we come to terms with our pasts.Praise for Broken Sleep“Such a pleasure to plunge into this joyous kaleidoscope of a novel, a multi-voiced tumbling chorus of outrageous characters, hidden parenthood, secrets and discoveries, the gritty outré art world of the 1970s, rockers and mad visionaries and a man named Moses who just wants to live his life when illness forces him to open up the closed door of his family’s mysterious past. I haven’t seen a book with such energy and joy and sweeping delights since The World According to Garp. Bauman’s novel is a tour de force.” —Janet Fitch, author of Paint It Black and White Oleander“Consuming multitudes of novels before it and after, Bruce Bauman’s flipbook-epic spectacularly shuffles voice and memory—a careening travelogue on psychic terrains of fate, art, sex, madness, history, philosophy, rock ’n’ roll, the personal political, and laws of identity for which no statute of limitations can exist. This is raging, inspiration-jacked literary insomnia at the deepest hour of our brilliant dreaming.” —Steve Erickson, author of These Dreams of You and Zeroville“Broken Sleep is a stunning, original, unpredictable novel, with a mix of wild voices and riveting, driving stories.  I love all the characters… The world that Bauman imagines is chilling and vivid, and there is an abundance of wisdom throughout the book, with startling insights on every page. The novel is a brilliant success—brave, wonderfully eccentric, utterly confident and engrossing.” —Joanna Scott, author of De Potter’s Grand Tour“Broken Sleep is an unabashedly Big Think book that refuses to be categorized. On the surface it’s a roller coaster, jetting forward with ideas/observations on everything from avant-garde art to rock ’n’ roll renown to history and philosophy. Yet beneath the surface it is also a warm-hearted exploration of the deep messiness of families. Of parents, present and absent, and their children. Of siblings and spouses and volitional families of friends and bandmates. It’s a simultaneously poignant and exhilarating ride.” —Melvin Jules Bukiet, author of After“Broken Sleep could be considered the author’s great American retort to Stephen Dedalus’s declaration in Joyce’s Ulyssesthat ‘History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake.’...Bauman’s philosophical, humorous, and compelling storytelling ponders many different riddles of exile—personal, political, artistic with an always acute eye and an unfailingly intense empathy.” —Anthony Miller, critic and author"Bruce Bauman is one of the most engaging and engaged writers and thinkers that I know." —Rebecca Goldstein, author ofPlato at the GoogleplexBruce Bauman is the author of the novel And the Word Was. Among his awards are a COLA (City of Los Angeles) Fellowship in Literature, a Durfee Foundation grant, and a UNESCO/Aschberg Fellowship. Prudence (Riverhead Books) Please join us tonight for David Treuer's haunting and unforgettable novel about love, loss, race, and desire in World War II-era America. On a sweltering day in August 1942, Frankie Washburn returns to his family's rustic Minnesota resort for one last visit before he joins the war as a bombardier, headed for the darkened skies over Europe. Awaiting him at the Pines are those he's about to leave behind: his hovering mother; the distant father to whom he's been a disappointment; the Indian caretaker who's been more of a father to him than his own; and Billy, the childhood friend who over the years has become something much more intimate. But before the homecoming can be celebrated, the search for a German soldier, escaped from the POW camp across the river, explodes in a shocking act of violence, with consequences that will reverberate years into the future for all of them and that will shape how each of them makes sense of their lives. With Prudence, David Treuer delivers his most ambitious and captivating novel yet. Powerful and wholly original, it's a story of desire and loss and the search for connection in a riven world; of race and class in a supposedly more innocent era. Most profoundly, it's about the secrets we choose to keep, the ones we can't help but tell, and who--and how--we're allowed to love Praise for Prudence: "David Treuer's novel Prudence is a wondrous and mesmerizing narrative--intricate, seductive and wholly gratifying." --Toni Morrison David Treuer is Ojibwe from the Leech Lake Reservation in northern Minnesota. He grew up on Leech Lake and left to attend Princeton University where he worked with Paul Muldoon, Joanna Scott, and Toni Morrison. He published his first novel, Little, when he was twenty-four. Treuer is the recipient of the Pushcart Prize, and his work has been named an editor's pick by the Washington Post, Time Out, and City Pages. His essays and reviews have appeared in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Esquire, Slate.com, and The Washington Post. He has a PhD in anthropology and teaches literature and creative writing at The University of Southern California. He divides his time between LA and The Leech Lake Reservation.

Since the publication of “Huckleberry Finn” in 1885, countless readers, all small-town boys-at-heart, who envied and wanted to trade places with the free-as-a-bird Huck, have drifted down the Mississippi with him and his easy to fool, credulous yet capable and levelheaded companion Jim, whose thoughts constantly turn to his family still in servitude, following them as, fast on their toes, … Read more about this episode...
