Send us a textIn this episode, I explore the concept of Human Giver Syndrome, a term coined by Emily Nagoski, PhD, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, in their groundbreaking book Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle. This deeply ingrained societal expectation pressures women—especially women physicians—to be endlessly selfless, cheerful, and giving, often at the expense of their own well-being.Many of us have experienced pushback for being “too negative” or “not a teamplayer” when we've tried to meet our own needs. Today we unpack three specific ways Human Giver Syndrome shows up in the lives of women physicians: the silencing of your voice, the invisible labor of emotional support, and the relentless drive to be “perfectly” selfless. Finally, we envision what life could look like if you broke free from these expectations. In This Episode, You'll Learn:What Human Giver Syndrome is, as defined by Emily and Amelia Nagoski in Burnout. How this toxic expectation impacts women physicians and contributes to burnout.Three ways it shows up in your life—and how to recognize the patterns.Your plan for breaking free of Human Giver Syndrome; there's hope!Resources Mentioned:Unbound: Women Physicians Reclaiming Their LivesIf you're ready to break free from burnout and reclaim your life, check out Unbound: Women Physicians Reclaiming Their Lives. Toni Morris joins Yo today to talk about the book Burnout. We have probably all experienced it and the authors, two sisters, Emily and Amelia Nagoski provide insights into how we can fight back. Toni brings a lot of insights and understanding to this subject as Executive Director of Experience and Engagement at John Muir Health, an integrated system of doctors, hospitals and other services in the San Francisco Bay Area. From about 2001 to 2013, Toni opened and led start-up health care facilities - from overseeing construction, to licensing/regulatory compliance, to hiring/training staff, physician recruitment, and operations, and also served as the regional director for business development and marketing for a national rehabilitation company. She has developed and facilitated training workshops for teams and leadership, and lead consulting projects at various health care systems across the country. She's taught at the community college level and has been an executive/life coach since 2014. Throughout her career, the part of her work that has always resonated has been mentoring, teaching and helping people grow and pursue their goals! She is an author, and in 2012, founded a nonprofit organization, Bridges for Humanity. · Her writing has primarily focused on fictional stories that inspire young people to be their best selves, increase their self-awareness, and recognize their own strengths and value. She published the 1st book in a series of 5, written for young people (ages 6-12). · Bridges for Humanity provides experiential learning opportunities for students (15-19) to develop interpersonal communication skills, identify and address unconscious biases and build relationship skills. Here are some of the questions we explored: · What is burnout? · What is the difference between stress and stressors? · How can we complete the stress cycle? · What are signs we need to deal with the stress? · What is the Monitor concept? · What is the Human Giver Syndrome? · What are signs we need to recharge? · Who is the Madwoman within? More about Toni: Toni married her life partner when marriage equality became legal in 2013. Her first marriage started at a very young age (17). While that marriage ended in divorce, she did receive the gift of 4 beautiful children, and each has brought experiences to her life that have been educational, inspirational and a little bumpy! Caterpillars go through a process called metamorphosis where they dissolve into a complete pile of goo before they can bust out of the chrysalis as a beautiful butterfly. Sometimes, when we're going through the roughest times of our lives, we don't realize that we're actually just a pile of goo that's getting ready to spread our wings in our true purpose.  When we get plunged into hard times, we are often put there by our own inability to set boundaries and take care of ourselves. Dr. Lamia Katbi and I discuss what it's like being in the darkest of the dark hours and how we can go from burnout to mindfulness. Coming out on the other side of burnout is no easy feat, but once you emerge from the suffocation and weight of perfectionism and unrealistic expectations, you begin to experience your life in a way that makes you feel stronger, better, and more confident.  Ultimately, it all comes back to the fact that we cannot serve others as physicians if we are not taking care of ourselves and loving ourselves in the way that we would love and care for others. The idea of doing it all ultimately means we're doing it badly.   Complete the cycle of stress. Recognize your worth. Celebrate being instead of giving.   https://youtu.be/5Q-rJ9wDODQ

Why are women so prone to burn out? In this episode I'm going to talk about why the game is rigged for women. Your awareness of how the game is rigged can free you from the trappings of the game. You owe it to yourself, your daughters, and your nieces to listen to this episode. Shownotes: The game is rigged, and Patriarchy is the name of the game. Stereotypical gender roles, discrimination, and the glass ceiling are all examples of modern day patriarchy. Human Giver Syndrome tells women that they have to give away every drop of their humanity to keep others happy. It's whack. Women are often expected to take on more “unpaid labor” in the household. Tracking paid and unpaid labor, and re-dividing labor may be needed if you are feeling burned out and overwhelmed. If this is a hot topic already, it may be time for marriage counseling to come to an agreeable compromise. If you're a woman, then my guess is you know a little something about taking care of others and putting everything and everyone else first. And, you may even feel a sense of guilt when it comes to taking care of yourself. Or taking time to do things you love.If so, you are going to love this episode. Aftan called in today because she has been neglecting a very big part of who she is for many years to raise her two daughters. Slowly over time she let go of pieces of herself and her dreams, and has gotten caught up in always giving to others without giving herself the same attention. Now that her daughters are grown and out of the house, she wants to reconnect with her artistic spirit and the dreams that she had left behind; one of them being to FINALLY write a screenplay that she has been thinking about for years.Aftan's obstacle to this goal is that she has pushed herself to the point of burnout by taking care of everyone else in her life, and she needs to relearn how to take care of her own needs and get reconnected to her passions; in essence to reclaim the lost parts of herself.During the episode we  uncover the fact that she feels unsupported by her peers in her small Idaho town. We dive deeper into this lack of support, and learn that it actually stems back much further than she realized…and that she took on the role of caregiver out of lack of feeling worthy in the world. This led to being in many different relationships with people who had what she deems, “broken wings.” It's an a-ha moment for her when we discover how her over-giving is just a way she avoids herself and her own desires. Her taking care of others is her compensatory strategy to feel loved and get attention, but it has left her feeling empty and alone. If you have let a large part of who you are fall by the wayside, and have let some of your dreams go because you feel guilty indulging in your own passions or self interest, today's conversation will be extremely insightful and inspirational. This episode offers powerful strategies and tools to create the support you need so you can take care of yourself and COME HOME to what really matters to you without guilt, or fear of being selfish.Whether you are a people pleaser, over-giver, you lack setting boundaries or fear the judgement of others, I know this episode will help you see life, and yourself through a different perspective. In essence it will help you to reclaim the power, and your dreams that you let go of a long time ago.RESOURCESIf you are suffering from burnout and Human Giver Syndrome, check out this book by Dr. Emily Nagoski and Amelia Nagoski!Find the book Expectation Hangover by Christine Hassler here.Check out Christine's incredible podcast, Over It & On With It at her website. If you want some free coaching, be a guest on my show and let's work it out together and help you Come Home to what truly matters; book a session here.Come join my FREE Facebook Group, Reclaim Your Wild: A Radical Self-Care + Self-Discovery Group for WomenFind me on Instagram: @melcostellocoachWebsite: https://karmachow.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/2004687/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/karmachow

It's about remembering that you have your own identity as a person: you are more than a caregiver, and you can dare to live your own life, too. Human Giver Syndrome is the belief that some people (the givers) are supposed to exist mainly to put their energy into creating comfort and success for other people, and to be attractive and available, physically and emotionally, at all times while doing it. In this episode, Kay Coughlin talks about how this syndrome can afflict you as a family caregiver (including if you are a parent), whether or not you think of yourself as a people-pleaser. In this episode, Kay Coughlin talks about how to feel better as a family caregiver right away. It might surprise you, because it doesn't require a lot of time or energy, and it doesn't rely on making any changes to your life or your situation. You don't even have to tell anybody that you are doing it. All you need is courage and a little bit of knowledge. It's not easy to do, but it is a simple step you can take. That's what this episode is all about. Full transcript of this episode is available at FacilitatorOnFire.net/episode30. In this episode, Kay Coughlin talks about another radical idea: that it's OK for caregivers to have identities and lives that don't revolve around our role as caregivers. Kay explains that it's normal and healthy to have individual needs and desires - and why it can be so hard to do that it seems laughable or even impossible. But it is possible to be seen for who we are, even if it's not related at all to our caregiving responsibilities. Full transcript of this episode is available at FacilitatorOnFire.net/episode29. In this episode, Kay Coughlin talks about why the overwhelming experience of being a caregiver can keep you stuck, unable to make changes to situations, relationships, beliefs and emotions. The good news is that you don't have to change everything all at once. You can choose just one starting point. Kay reminds us we all have permission to be stuck - it's a totally normal human condition - and helps caregivers figure out how to pick a starting point. There are powerful stereotypes that family caregivers inherit when we agree to become caregivers. We don't realize how strong they are until our lives become something we didn't ask for. And then we wake up one day and don't recognize ourselves any more. In this episode, Kay Coughlin names some of the biggest caregiving stereotypes that she has identified. Why? Well, she wishes somebody would have given her this language when she was getting started as a caregiver. She could feel the stereotypes all around her and could feel the pressure to perform, but just couldn't put a name on what was happening. Which meant she didn't know to question the stereotypes either. Spoiler alert: none of these has to be true, no matter what the people around you say.
