Click here to send me a quick message :) Over the course of the past couple hundred years, we've been progressively losing our intact communities. Instead of extended family and village style lives, most of us in the western industrialized world exist in nuclear family structures. Some of that independence has been welcome; but there is also a tremendous loss of community care and support. There is perhaps nowhere this loss is more palpable than in the childbearing years. Which is what Shakila Marando has felt compelled to address with her doula care collective, Doulas by the Bay.She started with a personal practice as a doula but the demand for her services surpassed her capacity, so she began expanding, and over time has now built up her community care model to 60 doulas and counting. And they're expanding from the San Francisco Bay Area down to Southern California now, always recruiting new doulas and offering more education and support for families in those communities. I also loved hearing about her passion for perinatal mood support, and the role doulas can play in the rollercoaster of emotions that shows up postpartum.Listen to learn:Shakila's personal journey from becoming a new mother to becoming a doulathe origin story of Doulas by the Baya little on how this kind of doula community care model works what a doula is and is nothow doulas can play a role in perinatal mood supportwhat to consider when choosing a doulaResources:Today's shownotes: Get Shakila's links!Episode 25: Immediate postpartum care the herbal way w Liz PhilbrickEpisode 85: Acupressure for childbearing years with Sarah TewheyEpisode 136: The Herbal Doula with Marie WhiteEpisode 166: Your postpartum body w Courtney Naliboff + Dr Ruth MacyIf you loved this episode, share it with a friend, or take a screenshot and share on social media and tag me @herbalwombwisdomAnd if you love this podcast, leave a rating & write a review! Shakila Azizzada was born in Kabul in Afghanistan in 1964. She now lives in the Netherlands and writes in both Dari and Dutch. Her poems are unusual in their frankness and delicacy, particularly in the way she approaches intimacy and female desire, subjects which are rarely addressed by women poets writing in Dari. After working on the transitions with the cultural anthropologist Zuzanna Olszewska, the poet Mimi Khalvati said of Azizzada: She is a very musical poet, tender and intimate, but also uncompromising in her political poems, and sometimes surreal – a poet of range and courage. Many of the poems, or parts of them, were relatively straightforward to translate and, perhaps because of the European influence, seemed to slip happily into English. Shakila's voice is not as adorned as some poetry in Farsi that I have read, and is idiomatic and sometimes humorous or satiric. We start 2021 with two poets from Afghanistan whose poems have narrative strands, one is a fairy tale complete with daemons and the other is a sketch of the life of an economic migrant who fears the host of his wife. Shakila Azizzada was born in Kabul in Afghanistan in 1964. During her middle school and university years in Kabul, she started writing stories and poems, many of which were published in magazines. Her poems are unusual in their frankness and delicacy, particularly in the way she approaches intimacy and female desire, subjects which are rarely adressed by women poets writing in Dari. Mohammad Bagher Kolahi Ahari was born in 1950 in Mashhad, Khorasan. His first collection Above the Four Elements was published in 1977. He published six more collections of poetry. Kolahi has developed his distinct voice inspired by lyrical and elegiac traditions of Persian poetry combined with his story-telling talent. Many of Kolahi’s poems contain a narrative containing elements of folk tales and description of rural Khorasan. In his poems, he very often depicts the life and the stories of marginalized groups of the society like gypsies, petty criminals and labourers.
This week’s episode is another archive that has incredible relevance to today’s business climate. In the studio with Mike is Shakila Ahmad, President and Chair of the Board of the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati. They discuss many ideas and opportunities available to unite people through similarities, rather than categorize people through differences. Listen to Shakila share about: Why she left corporate life to engage as a leader in her community (5:31) How to identify leaders for your community and the importance of engagement (8:04) Mike and Shakila discuss: Cultural competency and leveraging talent with cultural engagement (12:33) Including community engagement in your business plan (16:45) Understanding the true meaning of “Team Chemistry” (19:28) Shakila shares her passion about educating people with the Islamic Center’s program called “Know Your Neighbor” and how leaders can use this model to create a better culture. (20:15) Listen NOW! Mike and Shakila ask: What message about diversity are you sending intentionally or unconsciously to your children, your organization, and your community? How does this reflect the level of trust you convey, and open-mindedness in all those areas of your life? (27:26) Shakila shares examples of how she worked with the City of Mason to engage the entire community (businesses, schools, and civic leadership) to change their conversations about cultural diversity. (27:45) Mike and Shakila challenge leaders: Ditch preconceived notions about others and get first-hand knowledge (31:09) Bridge understanding and cultural sensitivity by organizing difficult conversations, especially in light of national events, such as race riots and 9/11. (32:32, 36:16) Don’t assume you know what people are all about. Don't give into stereotypes from the media. Take a bold step to make a personal connection (39:59) Interfaith dialogue refers to cooperative, constructive, and positive interaction between people of different religious traditions (i.e., “faiths”) and/or spiritual or humanistic beliefs, at both the individual and institutional levels.” ~Wikipedia Learn about interfaith dialogue Have a question or comment? This week's poem is by Shakila Azizzada from Afghanistan. The poem is read first in English translation by Mimi Khalvati and then in Dari by Shakila herself. Shakila has spent many years in the Netherlands and her poetry reflects both her Afghan heritage and her European influences. She also writes in Dutch and translates her own poetry both ways. She is a very musical poet, tender and intimate, but also uncompromising in her political poems, and sometimes surreal – a poet of range and courage. Many of the poems, or parts of them, were relatively straightforward to translate and, perhaps because of the European influence, seemed to slip happily into English. Shakila’s voice is not as adorned as some poetry in Farsi that I have read, and is idiomatic and sometimes humorous or satiric. I speak colloquial Farsi and this of course was a great help as, with Zuzanna’s help, I could understand most of the original. Zuzanna also recorded a tape for me of the poems we were working on and this, more than anything else, helped me to try and find equivalent idioms while replicating the musical phrases. Roti Chanai was a revelation to me - a simple bread dough is formed into balls, stretched very thinly, scrunched, spiraled, and reflattened. After being coated in ghee every step of the way, the flat bread is then fried in more ghee. Finally, the hot, crispy, buttery layers are pulled apart and eaten. While new to me, this bread represents stability and family and love and home to my guest Shakila. The bread connects her the multi-cultural family that somehow made living together on one compound work in Singapore. The bread follows her to England and eventually the U.S. and finally, it was this bread that brought Shakila's American son back to his Singaporean roots. If any of us ever doubted the power of food, this episode will convince us that food is family, love, and memories. I am thrilled that we are able to welcome Dr. Shakila Angadi to this episode today. She is a general dentist and a Social and Emotional Intelligence coach. She focuses on emotional processing, awareness and learning how to use our emotions as information. This is so vital to our current world situation right now! People are worried and fearful of the unknowns of the pandemic we are all experiencing. Fears can lead to reactive behaviors that do not make sense because people are in survival mode and filled with panic. We need to recognize these emotions, listen to them and process these big emotions. And we need to realize that there are no right or wrong ways to process these emotions. When it comes to these big feelings of anxiety and overwhelm, as Dr. Angadi says, “We don't get over it, we get through it.” This may be uncomfortable, but it is so important to realize this. In this episode we explore these emotions we are all experiencing and the fact that we deserve some grace during difficult times. We have to leave our expectations behind right now and just deal with each day as it comes. We can't keep up with tomorrow, so give yourself some grace! Big expectations are not helpful right now. We need to accept ourselves just the way we are, grant ourselves permission to alter the courses we choose and give ourselves some compassion for the decisions we need to make. Listen to this episode for some ideas on how to process the emotions we are all experiencing and ways to recognize the special opportunities hidden within the chaos of our current reality. Episode Highlights: Asking questions when your child experiences struggles until you get answers that make sense is critical Parents must be advocates for their children Focus and behavioral difficulties as well as frustration in children can all be symptoms of a lack of healthy sleep Quotes: “I think something breaks inside of you when you start realizing that your child is acquiring these self-esteem issues.” “Within a month…the teacher was giving me feedback that he was already improving in his reading, he was already improving in his Math, and he was able to focus better.” “[The teacher] was telling me that almost all of the behavioral concerns that she had for him were actually eliminated.” “There is no such thing as a bad kid, all we have is a sleep deprived kid.” “The signs and symptoms of a child that is sleep deprived are the exact same as those of a child that has ADHD.” “I have my child back, and I’m so grateful for that. And you will be too if you keep asking questions.” Links: Dassani Dentistry: https://www.dassanidentistry.com/podcast Dr. Shakila Angadi’s homepage: https://www.theinspireddentist.com/ Podigy homepage: https://podigy.co/

This week, to celebrate Nowrus, the Dual Poetry Podcast poem is Haft Seen by Shakila Azizzada from Afghanistan. The poem is read first in English translation by Mimi Khalvati and then in Dari by Shakila Azizzada. 'Haft Seen' is a traditional custom for the Persian new year celebration known as Nowruz. A table is set with 7 different items which its essential items letters start with (Sin-Seen "س"). These are Sib - Apple, Sabze - Grass, Senjed - Sea-buckthorn, Serkeh - Vinegar, Samanu -a sweet paste made from germinated wheat, Somaq - Sumac and Seer - (Garlic) each with their own symbolic meaning. The poem also references Dam Platz, a historical square in Amsterdam flanked by the Royal Palace and the National Memorial to the Dutch war dead. This is part of our new rebranded weekly release: the Dual Poetry Podcast, one poem in two languages from the Poetry Translation Centre. As ever we will be releasing a translated poem each week. It's time to unleash your unstoppable! If you’re ready to show up, tell the truth, and do the work so you can live God’s best for your life, then you are in the right place. Join Ashley Winston and her guests as they share encouraging stories, inspirational insight, and practical advice on all things faith, business, and life. In each episode, you'll learn how to apply biblical principles so that you can see yourself the way that God sees you, elevate your faith, and align your actions with what you say you want. Discover how following God's plan on this journey of faith will help you break through to your best. On today's episode: There’s a temptation to hide behind God rather than partnering with Him to pursue your destiny (especially in church). The tendency is that you have to be perfect or have a specific type of image in order to be loved by God or accepted by people. We try to wear masks like placing our identity in our looks, our performance at work, or the other roles we play to hide fear or pain. But the truth is none of us have it all together, and that’s why we need Jesus. In this episode, we get up close and personal with my guest and close friend, Shakila Stewart, about her journey of taking off the mask of who she thought she was in order to reveal the person God created her to be. Who’s ever had their life turned upside down? Or maybe God has interrupted what you had in mind? This episode is really encouraging if you struggle with surrendering to God’s will for your life or if you have difficulty with being the truest version of yourself. By the end, you’ll learn how to walk by faith in order to do the work God has called you to do. Happy listening! Gender-based violence expert at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Professor Shakila Singh, has encouraged society to expose men who use violence against women. This after activist, singer and former ANC parliamentarian, Jennifer Ferguson, spoke out about her alleged rape ordeal. Ferguson says the alleged rape took place at a hotel in Port Elizabeth almost 24 years ago with a well-known, senior South African football administrator. Ferguson has told SABC News, from her home in Sweden, that the global "Hashtag Me Too" campaign gave her the courage to expose her alleged rapist.
