Daniel Gore is a Founding Partner of Orthogonal Partners, a boutique asset manager investing in "next generation" alternative investment strategies.  He has had an extensive career in investing, including time spent in angel investing, in a family office and in film finance. He is currently pursuing opportunities in small and mid market UK firms.   Our conversation starts with the path that Dan took to this point, which included numerous different opportunities for learning – and we hear about the importance of trust and integrity as values that transcend different investment areas. Dan reflects on his unconventional career, gaining a broad understanding of different asset classes and the importance of backing the right teams. Moving now to Orthogonal partners, we speak about its range, and why it is a source of unconventional returns, and we discuss the structural funding gap in the UK SME market and the government's efforts to address it through the British Business Bank. We dive in to some details of the UK SME market, which presents a meaningful opportunity set with 5.6 million SMEs accounting for 99% of all businesses and 60% of private sector jobs.  We conclude with some reflections on the power of networking and the value of building relationships from the start of one's career. Thank you Eagle Point Credit and Benefit Street Partners for supporting this series! With over $12 billion of AUM, Eagle Point Credit Management is a premier investment firm focused on generating strong returns for its clients through sourcing, evaluating and executing investments in CLOs, Portfolio Debt Securities and other credit investments that it believes shave the potential to outperform their respective markets generally.Benefit Street Partners is a leading global alternative credit asset manager offering clients investment solutions across a broad range of complementary credit strategies, including direct lending, special situations, structured credit, high yield bonds, leveraged loans and commercial real estate debt and equity. Have you ever had an idea for a business but thought there were too many challenges and barriers to getting started? Whether it's access to funding or more importantly, access to good quality business advice and mentoring,Or maybe you've been in business for a year or two and you're facing some headwinds- the economy is challenging, getting access to capital is harder than ever, and finding reliable sources of high-quality impartial advice is difficult.Or it could even be that you're currently working for a company and think that you could do things a bit better than the way things are done, but it's too big a leap to take. - you've got bills to pay and a family to support, and starting on your own without the finances or guidance - it just seems too risky. If so, this may be the conversation you've been waiting for, and I think you'll want to get to know this week's guest, Richard Bearman, managing director at the British Business Bank with a focus on start-ups and early-stage businesses.I must confess that although I was aware of the British Bank, I wasn't clear on the full range of services and support they offer to British entrepreneurs. - from start-up through scale-up and beyond, they provide a complete suite of services both directly and in partnership with other organisations.I really enjoyed my conversation with Richard, and in particular, some of the inspiring stories he shared about founders who have benefitted from the services provided by the bank and who've gone on to achieve remarkable things in business, regardless of the headwinds they've faced. What comes through from the conversion is that Richard really cares; he wants to help, he wants to make a difference and he wants to encourage entrepreneurship across the UK.I think Britain is a very entrepreneurial nation, and there are so many people with an idea bubbling inside of them that if only they could find a way to get started, it could change their lives. If that's you or someone you know, I encourage you to check out the positive things that the British Business Bank is doing, starting with the vast resources they provide free of charge on their website, and I've posted a link in the show note for you to take a look.Apparently, it was Mark Twain who said, “Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.” Sometimes we need a spark of inspiration, something to compel us to action.I really think you'll enjoy this inspired conversation - ladies and gentlemen I give you Mr Richard Bearman.Links:https://www.linkedin.com/in/richard-bearman-48291118/https://www.british-business-bank.co.uk/our-people/richard-bearman/https://www.british-business-bank.co.uk/finance-hub/https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qykl/episodes/playerThis podcast is produced by GR Media Sponsored by Capital Asset Management

Asher Ismail, co-founder at Uncapped, discusses a very important topic for founders and business leaders: raising capital. Ismail shares how his experience with two prior startups made him realize a vital business problem. With bootstrapping or funding your own business, there are only two ways to raise capital: debt or equity. The former can be risky and expensive. The latter can dilute your ownership and leave founders at the short end after so many sacrifices.Ismail urges founders to think about their motivation, strategy, and approach when raising capital. Some founders seek to raise at all costs, considering this the metric of success. Ismail argues that the true measure of success is driving profitability in the business, with raising capital only the first step in a long journey. The use of capital should be maximized towards growth and having a runway.Ismail thinks that the evolution of new capital-raising products is the way of the future. The British Business Bank conducted a study that showed 73% of entrepreneurs chose to forego growth because they felt they would be unable to repay borrowing for capital. He also thinks e-commerce will continue on its trend, with 40% of all commercial activities except groceries now on the internet.Gain some great insight on raising capital and maximizing your efforts so you can focus on business growth. Listeners can also unlock a special promotion from Uncapped that Ismail shares at the end of the episode.LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/asherismail/Email - asher@weareuncapped.com This episode is brought to you by Content Allies.Content Allies helps B2B tech companies launch revenue-generating podcasts. With businesses going full out on CBILS and Bounce Back Loans the alternative finance sector, which was booming up until 2020, has taken a hit with falling demand. We look at news of one of the first casualties with Nat West’s announcement that ESME Loans is closing its doors. To close, the roll out of Open Banking takes a step forward with news that 9 of the main High Street banks are to join forces to spearhead a joined-up approach to deliver a consistent offering.
