We're smack in the middle of a bunch of action this year, and so far 2017 is the anti-2016 and that is something we needed. We have fighters traveling to different countries in their quests for riches and greatness, and we've also seen some of the darker things that come with boxing, like bunk disqualifications and post-fight fouls. For instance, this weekend welterweight Errol Spence, Jr. travels to Sheffield, Yorkshire to fight Kell Brook, accounting for the "fighters traveling abroad" part. But last weekend, Andre Dirrell's uncle Leon Lawson decked Jose Uzcategui with a sucker punch after their fight ended prematurely on a foul. These aren't weird times. This is just boxing. And this week on the boxing history edition of Knuckles and Gloves Boxing Radio, Compubox operator Aris Pina and writer/historian Patrick Connor team up to discuss these topics and their places in boxing history. 2017 just continues to move forward with worthwhile fights, though not without some speed bumps here and there. They're simply a part of boxing though, and they're negated by the good action the sport has seen already this year. This weekend on Showtime, for instance, Kell Brook and Errol Spence tangle in an excellent welterweight matchup. And this past weekend on HBO, Terence Crawford seemed to confirm his place at the top echelon of the sport with a dominant performance over Felix Diaz. Also noteworthy: Jose Uzcategui on the receiving end of a nasty sucker punch after being DQ'd against Andre Dirrell, Ray Beltran's "Knockout of the Year" level KO of Jonathan Maicelo, Gervonta Davis' easy defeat of Liam Walsh, Shannon Brigg's positive drug test, and David Benavidez's win over Porky Medina. If we're feeling depraved enough, perhaps we'll talk some Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor. Follow us on Twitter!
