Miguel Flores, Assistant Professor and Programme Director for Work Placements at the School of Business, National College of Ireland (NCI), has been awarded the prestigious New Foundations research grant from Research Ireland to lead a groundbreaking project aimed at improving the inclusivity and accessibility of Degree-Embedded Work Placements for students with disabilities in Irish Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The project, titled "Enhancing University-to-Work Transitions of Students with Disabilities Through Work Placements: Assessing Barriers and Facilitators in Irish Higher Education," seeks to address a significant gap in academic research. While existing studies highlight that work placements help graduates apply academic knowledge, develop transferable skills, build professional networks, and shape their graduate identity - ultimately easing the transition into the labour market - these benefits are not equitably experienced by all students. Students with disabilities often face unique challenges, including attitudinal and institutional barriers, and additional systemic hurdles that can hinder their access to these valuable opportunities. "This research aims to uncover the barriers and enablers that influence the participation of students with disabilities in work placements. The goal is to inform evidence-based policies that foster more inclusive opportunities, empowering students with disabilities to maximise both their academic achievements and professional potential." ~ Dr Miguel Flores. This project builds on Dr. Flores's research into the labour market outcomes of higher education graduates, with a particular focus on the connection between work placements and employability. His recent study found that graduates who complete work placements are more likely to secure roles aligned with their career aspirations compared to those without placement experience (Arsenis & Flores, 2024a). Additionally, his latest publication highlights how work placements influence graduate earnings, revealing that students who return to their placement employer after graduation often enjoy significant financial advantages. These findings underscore the vital role that work placements play in enhancing graduate employability and long-term career success (Arsenis & Flores, 2024b). The New Foundations research grant presents an exciting opportunity to expand this research into the realms of disability, equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in higher education. The project is expected to have a lasting impact on how Irish HEIs design and implement work placements, contributing to the development of more inclusive educational environments that support the successful university-to-work transition for students with disabilities. In pursuit of this research, the project will be conducted in partnership with AHEAD, Ireland's leading civil society organisation dedicated to creating inclusive environments for students and graduates with disabilities. This collaboration will ensure that the research not only identifies the challenges faced by students with disabilities but also translates findings into practical, actionable strategies for both educational institutions and employers. More than provide services, however, the Familia program creates, well, a family for migrants who come to the U.S.—often without resources, friends, or family of their own. On today's episode, I talk with the coordinator of the Familia program, Ashley Klick, and two of its graduates, Julien Patrick Tete Wabo and Miguel Flores. Both fled political persecution in Cameroon and Nicaragua, respectively. They came to the U.S. alone, and through their own determination and the accompaniment of Holy Trinity, they have built new lives. O Biquini Cavadão é uma banda de rock, formada em 1985, no Rio de Janeiro (RJ). Composto por Bruno Gouveia (vocal), Carlos Coelho (guitarrista), Miguel Flores da Cunha (tecladista) e Álvaro “Birita” Lopes (baterista), atualmente, o grupo tem como músicos convidados o baixista e produtor Marcelo Magal e o saxofonista Walmer Carvalho. A banda fez parte da segunda geração de bandas dos anos 1980. Bruno Gouveia, Álvaro Birita, Miguel Flores e André “Sheik”, que eram colegas de terceiro ano do Colégio São Vicente de Paulo, decidiram tocar junto com mais alguns amigos, num sarau, resolveram fazer daquela ousadia um hábito. Após muitas formações, ouviram em uma visita do amigo Herbert Vianna (Paralamas do Sucesso) a inspiração do nome da banda, com ele dizendo que “Se eu tivesse essa idade, só pensaria em mulher, carros e biquíni cavadão”. Panamá, 14 de febrero de 2023El contrato de concesión para la administración del Cerro Patacón concluye en marzo de 2023 y todavía no se define qué pasará con el vertedero más grande del país. El director nacional de verificación del desempeño ambiental de Mi Ambiente, Miguel Flores, dejó en evidencia el incumplimiento de la empresa Urbalia en el programa En Contexto junto a la presentadora Adela Coriat.Las autoridades esperan que a partir de los siguientes meses se logre tener el adecuado manejo o disposición de estos desechos que hasta el momento no han sido bien administrados.Se conoce de varias empresas de otros países que están interesadas en administrar los desechos de Cerro Patacón y están próximas a presentar sus propuestas concretas."Hemos ido a distintos sitios y nadie quiere ese problema se están buscando entre 40 y 60 hectáreas, fuimos a dos áreas por el área de Tocumen, uno de ellos se inunda y se tendría que hacer rellenos y hay otro cerca del actual relleno sanitario", afirmó Flores.Procesos contra empresa UrbaliaActualmente, todos los desechos del distrito de Panamá y de San Miguelito van al relleno sanitario de Cerro Patacón, que es operado por Urbalia Panamá S.A. desde el 2008.Sin embargo, a raíz de las diferencias entre la empresa y las autoridades hay cerca de siete procesos abiertos. Unos son por incumplimiento de las herramientas de gestión ambiental, Urbalia cuenta con 4 estudios de impacto ambiental, otras por la contaminación de lixiviados.Años atrás los dirigentes de las comunidades de Kuna Nega y La Paz, denunciaron la contaminación de los ríos que se encuentran cerca de Cerro Patacón, y que desembocan en la cuenca de las aguas del Canal de Panamá."Urbalia ha reconsiderado varios procesos y se han ido hasta la Corte Suprema de Justicia y han dilatado estos procesos", destacó el director nacional de verificación del desempeño ambiental de Mi Ambiente.

Minnesota boxing fans will get a chance to see one of the sport's best young prospects in action this Sunday night at the Armory as unbeaten rising star Jesus Ramos Jr. of Arizona tries to move a step closer to a world title shot. But he faces a tough test in veteran Brian Mendoza, a native of New Mexico now fighting out of Las Vegas. Mendoza has won 19 of 20 professional bouts. This episode of the Minnesota Fight Night podcast features interviews with both fighters, including an extended chat with Mendoza. We also have an in-depth interview with Minneapolis fighter Ve Shawn Owens (12-2), who talks about his September 5 return to the Armory. At the time of the interview, an opponent had not yet been named. Owens, an Armory fan favorite, is 3-1 at the Minneapolis venue. In addition, we catch up with Armando "El Toro" Resendiz, a promising young Mexican fighter who plans to train out of Minneapolis. Resendiz takes on tough Marcos Hernandez (14-4-2) of Fresno, California. The fights are part of a nationally televised PBC on FOX card.
