From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times
“There is no getting over this. You will find a way to use it,” says Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn of the traumatic injury that changed her life. “You will find a way to incorporate this into your life. You will make meaning of this pain and you will find a way to exist —sometimes in the loss.”22 minutes. That's the amount of time Joyce Mikal-Flynn lay on the pavement beside a swimming pool while friends worked desperately to resuscitate her. She'd just swam the final leg of friendly competition when she sank to the bottom of the pool. Those 22 minutes became the catalyst for a profound life change. The motivation she used to come back stronger. Not just to survive but to thrive. Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn is the founder of Metahab, a strength based system to help individuals recover from traumatic events. She is the author of two books, Turning Tragedy into Triumph: Metahabilitation, A Contemporary Model of Rehabilitation and Anatomy of a Survivor: Building Resilience, Grit, and Growth After Trauma as well as numerous articles about post traumatic growth. As you listen to this episode consider:What is one difficult experience you struggle to recover from? How can you focus on the ways in which this struggle has presented you with gifts you did not expect? Since you're listening to this podcast, you've likely got symptoms of a Myocardial Bridge or you're post-surgery and have been “unroofed”. In either case, whatever your symptoms are or were, a heart attack, shortness of breath, severe angina or chest pain, for most of us, that's traumatic. On-going concern pre-surgery about whether or not you're going to die, or post-surgery concern about what will life be like now and the depression that so often follows are what we're addressing in this episode. My guest today, Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn, overcame a death experience surviving over 20 minutes of CPR. Through a harrowing journey of resilience and determination, she created a path to recovery, known as Metahabilitation, turning trauma into transformation. Dr. Mikal-Flynn walks us through her journey post the life-altering event, inspiring us with her story of grit and perseverance. She recognized life as she knew it had changed forever and embraced her newfound strength, eventually earning her Master's and Doctorate degrees. Her research is eye-opening, showing how people can not only survive but thrive after trauma. Through her Metahabilitation process, she helps us understand how positive thinking, self-awareness, and spirituality play crucial roles in the aftermath of such events. Discover the various stages of “Metahab” and how they have helped Dr. Mikal-Flynn and others transform their lives after trauma. For more information about Dr. JMF and Metahab visit www.metahab.com. Having now explained trauma and its chaos in episode 1 of Metahab at Sac State, Beth Ruyak questions Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn on her program for post traumatic growth, Metahab. The conversation will identify the 6 stages of Metahab and what to expect from each stage in the process. This is an enlightening and practical discussion that gives the listener enough content to explore and apply to their own personal experience of trauma to begin the journey from PTSD/Traumatic experience to PTG or post traumatic growth. For more information about Metahab, visit www.drjmf.com
Join veteran broadcaster Beth Ruyak and Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn as they discuss the genesis of the Metahab program that was born from the experience of severe trauma. The conversation will address the perception of trauma, it's harmful effects and question why some who suffer PTSD never regain some semblance of normalcy while others grow stronger as a result. In July 1990, Joyce Mikal-Flynn died after finishing a swimming race and sinking to the bottom of the pool. After 22 minutes of CPR, she was revived--but her recovery took much longer than that. One of her doctors later said, "You are the luckiest person I've ever met." In this episode, Dr. Mikal-Flynn describes her death-defying--and life-altering--experience, her road back to health, and how she found new purpose in helping others grow and thrive. She is now a professor and an expert in resilience and recovery; she also has developed a system called metahabilitation, which helps veterans, first responders, people dealing with addiction, and others with post-traumatic growth. Dr. Mikal-Flynn's story--and her work--are models of courage and resilience. In this episode:Describing the actual event (01:58)What happened (medically)? In the last episode the stage was set for dealing with the effects of the Covid Hangover. In this episode, Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn walks us through the power of her program, Metahab, to learn how to heal from the effects of Covid. This is a practical discussion that addresses how we ourselves can learn to heal from trauma and even takes a look back to us as children and how we were "taught" to learn ourselves. Looking ahead, there's even a conversation about today's child rearing and how one might best consider certain circumstances for a better outcome in helping today's children deal with adversity and trauma. For more information on Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn's program, visit www.metahab.com For more information on Financial Sobriety and to find the link to her event taking place at Sacramento State University, you can visit www.yourfinancialsobriety.com
Let's face it. Even though the market had a good year in 2022, 2023 has been no picnic. Part of the issue, at least in the opinion of your hosts, Matthew Grishman and Jim Gebhardt, we're now experiencing the Covid hangover. Experiencing trauma is one thing, working through it is another and few would argue, the entire Covid era wreaked havoc on everything. Just because we had a good year for the stock market doesn't mean we're all good. Possibly even the opposite, we're not good at all. (Remember our episodes on masking up and wearing the armor to face the day...) So Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn has been invited back to help address the process of getting from traumatic to Post Traumatic Growth in the face of the Covid hangover. You'll recall her program from Episodes 68 and 69 where she introduced Metahabilitation, or Metahab, to the Financial Sobriety tribe. In this episode, you'll hear the discussion of the hangover's effects on us as well as a ramp up to ways to minimize the long haul challenges this could produce on our thought process and ultimately, our actions. Within this conversation, Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn, an expert in resilience and trauma care joins us. We discuss post traumatic growth, and the 6 stages of meta-rehabilitation that Dr. Joyce has discovered from her many conversations with trauma survivors. She highlights commonalities found among trauma survivors, and the program she's developed based on people's lived experience of finding meaning after trauma. In this Part 2 on the discussion of Metahab and the process of Post Traumatic Growth Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn identifies the 6 steps in the process to growth from trauma but after a slight deviation with Matthew and Jim on the initial willingness and acceptance of the individual that has experienced that trauma. It begins as a child and how well that child grows into a person capable of choosing to make a difference, capable of accepting the challenge ahead and capable of acting on the trauma to come out better on the other side of the process. The title is ominous... and true, but there's a wonderful continuation story and that's what you'll hear as your hosts Matthew and Jim walk you thru the activity that led to Dr. JMF's death experience and over 20 minutes of CPR before being resuscitated. Resilience, connection and purpose are evident in the outcome that went on to yield a Doctorate and stratified program for Post Traumatic Growth. Anyone that has experienced trauma in their life will appreciate the next two episodes as you learn how to best navigate the trauma in program called Metahab that was the outcome of Dr. JMF's process to health. I welcome Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn, a CSUS professor and expert in PTG (Post Traumatic Growth) to the show for a deeply inspiring conversation about her book, Anatomy of a Survivor: Building Resilience, Grit, and Growth After Trauma. Anatomy of a Survivor examines how survivors can utilize their inner strengths in order to build resilience, navigate through, and ultimately grow from traumas and other major life challenges. Dr. Joyce brings a positive attitude to the episode, but without the poofy platitudes we often hear. You'll hear about her story and her book, and be sure to listen carefully later on in the show for that turning point where she went from feeling sorry for herself to instead, taking on challenges and being grateful for a second chance. This wide ranging conversation touches on everything from her to academia classes to the state of today's students to the problem with today's “lawnmower parents.” In the middle of the show, we hear the wild and true story that is the centerpiece of Dr. Joyce's personal journey: In 1990, after a sudden cardiac event, she was actually dead for twenty-two minutes. CPR and determined doctors brought her back to life, but she found that her new life was entirely different. Dr. Joyce found herself suddenly facing depression, as well personal and professional setbacks. But as you'll hear, she ultimately recognized that this moment in her life was not an end point—it was the beginning. Time taught Dr. Joyce that taking control of your life begins with the essential choice to move forward. In spite of every obstacle, failure, and misstep on the way, she harnessed the power of positive thinking and continued to tell herself: you got this. Trauma and crisis are inescapable aspects of life; ones that never really leave you once you experience it. But for over two decades, Dr. Joyce has worked with and studied issues faced by survivors. Years of professional and personal experience with trauma and crisis have helped Dr. Joyce recognize that for survivors, moving forward and identifying specific mindsets and behaviors that encourage progress are essential. I hope you enjoy listening to this powerful episode with Dr. Joyce, and if you're interested in reading Anatomy of a Survivor or gifting it to a friend or loved one who you think could benefit from it, click here to check it out. Featuring interlacing stories with research on genetics, posttraumatic growth, and the neuroscience of resilience and happiness, Anatomy of a Survivor shows us how survivors of trauma can structure a positive and productive response by using Dr. Joyce's unique system to guide them forward. TIMESTAMPS: Dr. Flynn talks about how survivors of traumas use their inner strengths to build resilience. [01:20] One of the classes the professor teaches is called Traumatology. [06:44] There are three classifications of trauma: victim of the trauma, the secondary and the community. [08:48] There is nothing positive about trauma but there can be productive responses. [12:05] Word choices reprogram the brain. [15:20] Take control of what you can control. [18:26] There are six stages of meta-hab. [20:32] Are there differences between the male and the female brain? [21:55] What are the nutritional needs of the brain? [24:29] The technology of today can overwork the brain, but know too, that daydreaming uses the brain as it does a lot of work. [26:19] Joyce had a very close call with death that was a turning point in her life. [30:33] This stuff is tough but there is a way out and there is a way up. [36:57] During her recovery, Joyce was able to monitor her own progress as she got her brain function back. [48:00] You need to realize that you need help in order to move forward. [55:01] Some athletes in her study didn't see themselves as resilient. [57:05] How did she recalibrate after the months of recovering? [01:01:50] Instead of saying, “I have to do this,” say, “I get to do this.” Think of people who would love to be in your situation. [01:06:13] Pick one thing at a time that you want to do to improve your life. [01:10:06] How do you know, as you are supporting someone in recovery, when is the right time to say “Get up off the couch” or saying, “Enough. Let's get going?” [01:13:59] Isolation is a red flag to look for in the person recovering. [01:18:30] Joyce lists the other stages in meta habilitation. Chalk Art (0:00:00) After a loss or during a crisis, art has been a way for people to relieve tension or find inspiration and hope. For centuries, artists have expressed their feelings through music, painting, and architecture. But, what about chalk art? A group of artists, influenced by our current situation, have been creating beautiful chalk mosaics around their town in response to the effects of the pandemic. Today we're joined by artist Chelsea Ritter-Soronen, here to talk with us about her work with Chalk Riot and making art in a pandemic. Women and Advertising (0:16:50) Believe it or not, the average American is exposed to an average of 5,000 advertisements every day. Advertising is everywhere. So, it's no surprise that it has a massive effect on our values, thoughts, desires, and view of the world. The question is—is that effect good? Does it make us feel better about ourselves? Or is it just trying to get us to buy a tube lipstick? Jean Kilbourne is an internationally renowned public speaker, author, and researcher. She has also created several award-winning documentaries, including “Killing Us Softly: Advertising's Image of Women.” Jean is here today to discuss how advertising affects us, women in particular. Beautiful Lawns Anyone Can Manage (0:35:49) A lot of people pay lawn service companies to mow and edge their lawns, trim their trees, and prepare their flower beds. Now, if you absolutely hate yard work and you can afford this kind of service, then more power to you. But, before you get tempted to start paying someone else to make your lawn look beautiful, we have some tips for getting started on your own so you can save money and finally pull that lawn mower out before it rusts away in your shed. We're joined by friend of the show Carrie Ann Rhodes to talk about how to have a luscious yard without being an expert. After the Storm (0:52:46) We're pretty grateful that things with COVID have been calming down. But even if things could go back to normal in the blink of an eye, we'd still have some emotional recovering to do. We all went through something. Whether you lost a job, a family member, or simply the freedom to leave your house, life was turned upside down, and we're all walking the road to recovery. So, here to share with us her thoughts on how we can allow this event to strengthen us as we turn towards recovery is trauma expert Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn. Hamburger History (1:09:49) When you think of the quintessence of American food, what comes to mind? If you're like me, you probably think of the hamburger, and for good reason: Americans eat 50 billion hamburgers a year! The hamburger has created over a billion-dollar industry in the U.S. But when you travel abroad, you'll find that people of different countries are just as in love with this symbol of classic, American cuisine as we are. But, how did this popular dish come to be? And, with consumers becoming increasingly more health-conscious, how is it changing? To help answer these questions and more, we invited Christopher Carosa, a Hamburger Historian and Yale University graduate who recently came out with a book called Hamburger Dreams. Cleaning Household Fabrics (1:27:17) You know that moment when you see that your kids' sheets haven't been washed in a few weeks, and you feel both disgust and frustration that they either forgot or were too lazy to throw them in the wash on Saturday? And although you wash your pillow case often, has your pillow itself ever gotten a good scrub? I think it's safe to say that we're all feeling anxious to get outside and escape the confines of our own homes. Plus, it's important to stay active for our own physical and mental health. One way to meet all of these needs is by running. But is it even safe to go out and run in the face of COVID-19? Paul Ronto is a running expert and friend of the show. We wanted to discuss this important topic with him and get his take on it. Identity Awareness (1:24:36)What makes up your identity? Is it how many likes you get on Instagram or your most recent promotion? It's easy to let surface level factors like these influence the way we see ourselves when they really shouldn't matter at all.
