#110 Samantha Foster has lived in fear and torment for most of her life at the hands of abusive men. It first began when she was 3 years old living with a what she calls a "narcissistic sociopath" step-father. He sexually abused, raped and tortured her mother. He tortured, abused and molested her and her siblings. He would hang her and her family members up by their hands and arms on the back porch and then proceed to whip and beat them. He threatened to cut off her ears or nose while holding a knife to her face. As she describes the scene...it sounds like a living hell that she called daily life. At the age of 18, Samantha was finally able to run away from this demented step-father but the cycle of abuse only continued with other men. You see, when you know nothing else by abuse it is the only "familiar" life you know...especially when you were not taught any social or adult life skills. In her late 40's, Samantha was in an abusive relationship with a man that said that he was going to kill her. He had tied her up and then went to go grab his knife in the other room. She was ready to die. She imagined the knife piercing her skin, going through her body and into her heart. In her mind, it would finally be over. The torment, the torture, the abuse would all be over and she was ready. In a moment...everything changed. Her life has never been the same since that day and she recounts the story with Shawn and Jen in this powerful and unforgettable episode of the Hope Radio Podcast. You will hear how Samantha survived that fateful day and how she turned her pain and torture into a mission to help others. This is a must listen to episode of the Hope Radio Podcast!

Rhett Seevers was born on February 7, 1997. His proud parents, Beth and Randy Seevers brought home their bundle of joy to join their family of four. At four months, they were devastated by the news that their little boy had severe cerebral palsy and would face a life full of challenges. They dove in headfirst and learned all they could about his disabilities. On March 13, 2004, after 7 years of full-time care, love, and devotion, Rhett passed away at home unexpectedly with his family by his side. In the spring of 2005, as the anniversary of Rhett's death approached, a friend of Beth's introduced her to running. She learned of the 1st annual Shamrock'n ½ marathon. It was ironically being held on the first anniversary of Rhett's passing. Completing the run was such an inspiration to Beth. The following year, she asked that her friends and family join her. Join her they did; 35 additional friends and family donned the first baby blue running shirts that year. In the spring of 2007, with the addition of an organized training group, over 125 people participated in the race. On December 7, 2007, the “Runnin' for Rhett Non-Profit” was founded. The organization has now inspired 1000's of youth and adults in the Sacramento area. In Rhett's short life, he inspired many people with his infectious smile and will to live, but with his challenges, he could not walk, run or jump – no matter how hard he tried. #90 Imagine a Cafe with a very tasty menu of food options but no prices?!?! Imagine if the owners of the cafe said..."Pay what you can and if you can't pay, the meal is on us!" On a flight from Austin, TX to Denver, CO, Brad and Libby Birky plotted out the foundation of SAME Café (So All May Eat) on the back of a cocktail napkin and on a page from the in-flight magazine. Both had devoted innumerable hours to soup kitchens and food banks, wanting to do their part in the fight against hunger. At the time, Libby was teaching and Brad was working at a computer company in addition to taking culinary classes. They wanted to combine all of their experiences into a place that offered amazing food, a commitment to service, and a place to broaden one's view of the world. SAME Café was born and continues to grow and expand. The first day open was October 20, 2006. That was also the day that Libby zapped herself silly plugging in a fridge with wet hands. The two have learned a lot since that opening day. They were the second restaurant like this that they knew of in the country. The original restaurant is One World Café in Salt Lake City, UT. The founder of that restaurant, Denise Cerreta, was so gracious in helping Brad and Libby open a slightly different version of her pay-what-you-can café. Since then, there have been many other restaurants based on similar models popping up all over the country. #70 Brian Wollenberg is one of the most selfless people that the Hope Radio Podcast has interviewed! In his teens Brian took $1,500 of his own money (earned working in fast food) to feed 50+ people at Thanksgiving. That experience touched him so much that he decided to create an organization that would feed hundreds...then thousands at Thanksgiving. He then named the organization after a former co-worker that had lost his life in a car accident. Selfless...indeed. Hope can be sparked by acts of kindness. Hope can definitely be sparked by feeding needy families at Thanksgiving. Coming alongside our fellow citizens, community and humanity at large is the best way to engender hope in others. In this episode of the Hope Radio Podcast, Shawn and Jen sit down with Brian Wollenberg to discuss his mission to feed needy families throughout the country at Thanksgiving. Brian discusses the origins of his mission, the challenges in having a mission to feed others and the Byron Saunders Foundation he created...named after a friend that made an impact on him. Helping others sparks HOPE in you AND them!

#68 Samantha Lane lost her father in a motorcycle accident at a young age. It effected her and her siblings differently. She decided that she was going to take on the roll of being the “good kid.” The one that did everything right, didn't make waves, got good grades…the person that everyone could count on to not cause problems. Fast forward almost 15 years later and that mindset had turned her into a workaholic high achiever with no real balance in her life. It took her having a significant health challenge to reset her perspective on life, balance and time management. With renewed focus on truly “living” instead of just being a business high achiever, she found herself looking for a better way to track her daily, weekly and monthly goals. All the “planners” that she found were somehow lacking what she needed or wanted so she decided to do something about it! She created her own time management planner and began to help others focus on a more balanced life. Please join Shawn and Jen as they sit down with Samantha Lane to discuss life, health challenges, being a recovering workaholic and living a life of balance.
