Imperfect Heart is a podcast designed for, hosted by and recorded with those affected by or involved with the care and support for those with the birth defect of a Myocardial Bridge. Interviews with healthcare professionals, support professionals and those navigating their way through the often challenging process of diagnosis and treatment are the focus of the content. It’s their stories that are meant to inform, educate and even entertain in an effort to insure hope for the listener that what they are experiencing is real, that they are not alone and that there is hope for relief from the varied symptoms of a Myocardial Bridge. The host, Jeff Holden, has his own story to tell from symptom to diagnosis to treatment thus giving him insight and empathy as well as experience in the process of advocating for the patient. The program also seeks to make the healthcare industry more aware of the real symptoms of Myocardial Bridges with an aim to eliminate the gaslighting that is so prevalent around this defect and directly address the reality that Myocardial Bridges may be responsible for many more deaths from sudden cardiac arrest than previously thought. Early diagnosis and treatment could not only improve but may actually save lives when properly applied. More information can be found on the podcast website, www.myimperfectheart.com.

IMPERFECT HEART: STORIES OF MYOCARDIAL BRIDGES... THE BOOK!  You can now find it on amazon by clicking on the link  HERE.  Share it with your doctor, your cardiologist or anyone interested in learning a little more about our condition. I hope you can use it to your advantage to get the story told that Myocardial Bridges are real and they do cause symptoms. Let's use the book as a tool to educate, inform and provide hope. Thanks! This is an encore episode released previously in February of last year. Due to its popularity and the incredible journey of my guest, Kelly Portillo, not to mention the value of faith in many of the conversations had with patients, it seemed appropriate to post again. Certainty removes any semblance of doubt and without doubt, there is no reason for faith. Our condition is anything but certain, we and everyone supporting us are filled with doubt and fear and that means there's a great big opening for faith. Discover how Kelly Portillo practiced her faith successfully. Discover the power of perseverance and the importance of advocating for your own health as we share Kelly's captivating story, an individual who transformed her struggle with undiagnosed heart issues into a journey of self-discovery and medical triumph. At the young age of 13, Kelly's life took a dramatic turn in a karate class when she first experienced symptoms that would lead her on a path filled with challenges, misdiagnoses, and a relentless pursuit for answers. Her experiences shed light on the complexities of navigating the healthcare system and the courage it takes to stand up for oneself when faced with skepticism from professionals who should be allies. Feel the frustration and eventual elation as Kelly, undeterred by failed multiple ablasions, discovers and then connects with the expertise at Stanford to tackle her condition head-on. Her story is not just about the physical ailment of supraventricular tachycardia and a myocardial bridge but also about the emotional battle with it all, including the insurance companies, the exhausting appeals, and the sweet success of validation. Kelly's journey highlights the critical role of patient advocacy and the difference it can make in receiving proper care, offering hope and guidance for those who may find themselves in similar, overwhelming situations. Her constant and consistent belief in her faith and her fortitude, would yield incredible transformation from living with decades of pain to now embracing an active lifestyle post-unroofing surgery. Her narrative not only provides solace but also inspires; there is hope if you're suffering from a myocardial bridge and with the right support and determination, a quality life after years of furstration, is more than just possible—it's within reach. Enduring the tumultuous journey of heart condition diagnosis and treatment led me, Jeff Holden, to realize the profound need for a supportive community and reliable information. Reflecting on my own experiences, from the initial confusion and misdiagnosis to the breakthrough testing and subsequent surgery at Stanford, I've been driven to share insights that can empower others in similar situations. This episode marks a significant milestone with the release of my new book, Imperfect Heart: Stories of Myocardial Bridges, a tangible resource aimed at providing solace and understanding to those who prefer something beyond digital content. Through patient stories and expert interviews, I've assembled a wealth of knowledge that addresses the myriad challenges faced by patients, families, and healthcare professionals alike. Together with the relentless dedication of our Facebook group participants, the administrators, Rob and Stephanie, and the rest of the team, our community has flourished, expanding from 1,200 to over 2,600 members in just two years. This growth underscores our collective mission to raise awareness and foster understanding of heart conditions. It also emphasizes the need for a book as well. My hope is that this book will serve as an invaluable tool not only for individuals grappling with their diagnosis but also for medical professionals who need a deeper grasp of patient experiences. By sharing these narratives and insights, I aim to reach those who aren't digitally inclined and provide a cornerstone of support that bridges gaps in communication and knowledge across all fronts. I was doing some work with AI for a project and I wondered what I would find if I began a conversation about myocardial bridges. To my amazement, the responses to my questions were quite contemporary, on point for the most part and very much aware of the condition without doubt. I found the answers to be as technical as I wanted to get or as general given what I asked. The overall takeaway for me, was that there was little downside or disinformation. The entire conversation was pro myocardial bridges as we know them. If we could only get the majority of our medical community to be as receptive to the condition as our AI is, there would be far fewer people suffering from the condition and, in my opinion, far fewer deaths from cardiac arrest. We're making progress and the more our digital/virtual resources endorse the corrective procedures for a condition that is more common than other diseases like cancer and stroke, the better off we're going to be. There's a lot in the episode as we cover a lot of ground. It's one worth taking notes on if you find areas of interest. I hope the episode gives you some additional support to share with whomever you're trying to convince that what you're experiencing is real. It should also enlighten you to the capability of what AI can provide us with regard to information about myocardial bridges. It gives me tremendous encouragement to see that AI is initially very receptive to the techniques for correction of a bridge.  Here's to a future of acute awareness of MB's and to procedures and techniques to remedy them. I know one place we can go to get comfort in knowledge! Enjoy the episode.

Knowing I needed to find a cardiologist in my home community post surgery, left me a little disappointed to leave the confines of Stanford's outstanding care. After two years it seemed a good idea to reach out to see who might be the "lucky" doctor to get a patient like me. I'm pleased to say that the gentleman I was fortunate to be introduced to turned out to be very knowledgable about our condition and we had a very nice first consultation. Meeting Dr. Diwakar Lingam was a breath of fresh air as you're going to hear in this episode. His expertise offered reassurance, reminding me what a crucial role a well-informed cardiologist plays. This episode unfolds my first encounter with Dr. Lingam, a cardiologist who not only understood the complexities of our condition but also embraced the opportunity to share insights with our listeners. With his guidance, we explore what patients should seek in their healthcare providers, especially when navigating the oft-overlooked terrain of myocardial bridges. You'll hear me explain my personal medical narrative, from the initial bewildering diagnosis to the life-changing care I received at Stanford. Myocardial bridges are not just a medical anomaly but involve genetic factors and precise surgical interventions like unroofing surgery, which we dissect in our first discussion. Dr. Lingam understood the value of proper diagnosis, the role of advanced imaging techniques, and the often-missed symptoms that can complicate the path to treatment. This is a call to action for the cardiology community to bolster awareness and refine diagnostic approaches. Not many doctors would feel comfortable with a new patient, walking in with a recording device and asking to record the conversation in that very first meeting. Dr. Lingam was and I applaud him for his acceptance as this very simple gesture alone may allow this episode to be shared with other cardiologists who may not be as astute and aware of the need to treat a diagnosed MB patient differently. You can reach out to Dr. Lingam or share his contact information with a cardiologist you may want to connect with him at Roseville Cardiology Group. BIO Diwakar Lingam, M. D. graduated from Siddhartha Medical College, NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, India in 1994. He completed his residency at State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY where he served as a Chief Resident of Internal Medicine. He completed his fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease from Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Dr. Lingam strongly believes in solid patient education to improve patient compliance with treatment and better health outcomes. He strives hard to help patients understand clearly the rationale behind all the tests, treatment choices and medications prescribed. He focuses his patient education on lifestyle changes and the value of diet and exercise in the management of many cardiac and medical issues of the patient. Dr. Lingam's clinical interests are preventive cardiology, cardiac imaging, and cardio-oncology. He loves to help patients with cancer treatment-related cardiac issues and patients interested in preventing cardiac and vascular problems. He lives in Folsom with his wife and two children. During his free time, he enjoys biking, playing chess, and spending time with family. (00:11) New Cardiologist Discusses Myocardial Bridges Meeting a new cardiologist after myocardial bridge surgery, discussing the importance of informed and empathetic care in cardiology. Since you're listening to this podcast, you've likely got symptoms of a Myocardial Bridge or you're post-surgery and have been “unroofed”.  In either case, whatever your symptoms are or were, a heart attack, shortness of breath, severe angina or chest pain, for most of us, that's traumatic.  On-going concern pre-surgery about whether or not you're going to die, or post-surgery concern about what will life be like now and the depression that so often follows are what we're addressing in this episode. My guest today, Dr. Joyce Mikal-Flynn, overcame a death experience surviving over 20 minutes of CPR. Through a harrowing journey of resilience and determination, she created a path to recovery, known as Metahabilitation, turning trauma into transformation. Dr. Mikal-Flynn walks us through her journey post the life-altering event, inspiring us with her story of grit and perseverance. She recognized life as she knew it had changed forever and embraced her newfound strength, eventually earning her Master's and Doctorate degrees. Her research is eye-opening, showing how people can not only survive but thrive after trauma. Through her Metahabilitation process, she helps us understand how positive thinking, self-awareness, and spirituality play crucial roles in the aftermath of such events. Discover the various stages of “Metahab” and how they have helped Dr. Mikal-Flynn and others transform their lives after trauma. For more information about Dr. JMF and Metahab visit www.metahab.com. A treated myocardial bridge lifestyle is significantly improved and both pre and post surgery requires positivity, persistence, and advocating for yourself. Remember, you are not alone and I encourage you to reach out to share your story with me and help raise awareness of our condition for the benefit of so many others. I welcome your questions and engagement through the website, podcast, and social media. I appreciate all the support and encouragement and hope my efforts with your help, make a difference. In this second part of Amanda's journey, a relatively successful unroofing procedure leaves a residual problem related to the sternotomy.  Of course, given the nature of the process she's been through with all the twists and turns, why should the outcome go smoothly?  After all, this is one of the most unusual stories I've heard from our guests.  Now, nearly a year post-surgery, the final outcome on what to do about the sternum is still undecided.  As Amanda makes her decision to correct her "non-union", we'll be sure to share once we know. Amanda Pearlman was training to be a law enforcement officer when during Police Academy, a heart attack took her out of contention.  But that's just the tip of the iceberg as unbelievable diagnoses compounded the real issue of a Myocardial Bridge.  How she eventually got to her unroofing surgery is fable enough but what happens afterward, just when it seemed everything had finally been taken care of, is hard to fathom. This first part of a two part episode, takes us up to the correct diagnosis of her Myocardial Bridge and leads into part two, the surgical outcome and the unfortunate reality that everything didn't go as planned. Many of the stories to date, mine included, have had relatively good outcomes with little drama in the post-surgical process to recovery and final outcomes. We all know everything can't always go right and I think it's important we go from thinking that's the case to sharing stories that were met with some adversity as well.  Everything can't always go right.  Nothing is perfect.  And sometimes it can go terribly wrong.  Boots Knighton, an educator, an athlete, author and podcaster has quite the story to share as she had to advocate and navigate getting her "unroofing" surgery during Covid as well as dealing with a reconstruction issue as a result of the surgery.  She shares thoughts on mental health and nutrition but has an incredible solution to the mistake her doctor made that is a lesson we all can learn from.
