Wine: Maldonado Vineyards Chardonnay BIO: Ruben Rojas is a Colombian-American artist, fashion designer, podcaster, and activist. In 2013, Rojas traded in his suit for a paint brush and began transforming blank walls into unique empowering messages that today are uplifting communities and challenging the public to create new dialogues. Rubens' mission is to ignite creativity and inspire others to see the world through the lens of love. For Ruben, love isn't a word but rather a way of life. A way to change the world. Through his ‘love' artwork, Ruben Rojas encourages people to live through love actively, to participate in a ripple effect of positivity, and to love themselves and care for each other. Ruben's ‘Life Through Love' message started with his murals. In our current climate of chaos, division, and uncertainty, his artwork is a supercritical reminder that love is a powerful verb; choosing to live through love can transcend labels, bring people together, and break down stigmas. From France to Florida to California, Ruben Rojas' vibrant murals not only inspire viewers to dream hard, live in joy, and love big but they also beautify gray urban spaces. An act of love in itself. Several of his murals feature his signature ‘love' script—whether stories-high or small and repeated, Ruben's looping ‘love' amplifies his bold philosophy of love. Ruben's work is also found in surprising places. Putting his philosophy of love to the test, he worked with inmates at Lancaster state prison in 2018 to create a Ruben Rojas-style mural with the message “Forgive/Forgiven.” In conversations with the inmates, forgiving yourself before asking for forgiveness rose as a major theme in their lives. And quite frankly, a love lesson we all need to learn. In 2018, Ruben was painting his “Love Yourself” mural in Sherman Oaks and realized his hand-written ‘love' would have just as much impact printed on a t-shirt. After posting the mural and accompanying ‘love' t-shirt, he ended up selling 100 shirts, sparking a pivot to start a mission-driven clothing brand. Those first art-inspired shirts grew into a fuller offering of iconic street style options for men, women, kids, and accessories. Streetwear would be a powerful medium for spreading his philosophy of love on a daily basis: mission-driven clothing that not only looks amazing but also amplifies his ‘Live through Love' message. He officially launched his first pieces at the end of 2019. Most recently, Rojas was commissioned to create Love Sculptures for the NFL kickoff that will remain proudly displayed at SoFi Stadium (Home Of The LA Rams) and Highmark Stadium (Home of the Buffalo Bills). You can read the full press release here. The purpose of mission-driven brands is to positively impact the world through what they offer. Through his art, apparel, media, and speaking engagements, Ruben Rojas is creating a vibe that the world desperately needs. Operating out of love, not fear. Loving with purpose and action. Changing our narrative from what we lack to an abundance for giving. Ruben also shares his mission of spreading a life lived through love with his corporate and charitable partnerships, including BMW, American Express, Ava's Kitchen, W Hotels, and more. Love is a word commonly tossed about, but in reality, it's one of the most misunderstood and misused terms in the dictionary. The truth is, the definition can vary depending upon who, what, and how it's being used. The argument could be made that our world will be a better place when we stop seeing love as a corporate, one-size-fits-all expression … and begin personalizing the meaning.  “If we're not loving ourselves, can we actually receive love?” My guest today knows all about love and he's actually fallen in love with the word! He's Ruben Rojas … a first-generation American, successful businessman, and a highly sought-after artist! The co-founder of Beautify Earth, his work centers on that simple four-letter word, graces walls and buildings throughout the world, causing passersby to stare in awe and ponder the thought of what that word truly means to them.  “You can't ask for forgiveness unless you first forgive yourself.” Today, I'll speak with Ruben about his journey to becoming an artist, his background, and how the word love has impacted his life … and the lives of others! The world could use a lot more love and we're talking to the man who has seen firsthand the power of that simple four-letter word!   In This Episode (1:26) – Ruben on the importance of success as a first-generation American and the lengths his parent went to. (2:22) – Even though Ruben was a three-sport athlete, he knew in his heart he was always meant to be an artist.  (3:10) – Why ignoring your gifts can be mentally draining.  (5:01) – Why money is necessary and should be viewed as a byproduct, not the measuring stick. (6:00) – How Ruben blew through his first big real estate check and the Douche Bag Phase. (11:46) – Art isn't competitive, because only the artist can do what he or she does … that's their gift.  (12:30) – For Ruben, it's not just art; it's a mission.  (15:57) – How Ruben arrived at the decision to use the word ‘love' as the centerpiece of his business.  (17:26) – Sometimes the hardest thing to do is show up. (21:43) – Danny and Ruben discuss the origins of Live Through Love.  (22:17) – Ruben reveals that he is a big fan of manifestation.  (24:19) – Stopping to smell the roses and enjoy the fruits of his labor is something Ruben says he needs to do more often. (27:18) – The correlation between his art and his mental health.  (28:38) – Danny and Ruben discuss the balancing act of monetizing your passion.  (30:55) – Ruben's visits with inmates to discuss love and forgiveness.  (33:08)- Sitting in a room full of murderers. (38:24) – It's important to remember that personal accountability begins with baby steps.    Our Guest Since 2013, Ruben Rojas has been on a mission to spread love throughout a world that had fallen too far in love with hate. His art, murals, and global speaking engagements all have one central message: Love. The co-founder of Beautify Earth, a creative agency partnering with brands and local artists to connect the world through murals, packaging, and digital storytelling.    Resources & Links Off The Cuff https://www.offthecuff.fm/  https://www.youtube.com/c/OffTheCuffwithDannyLoPriore  https://www.instagram.com/1and1otc/  https://www.instagram.com/dannylopriore/ https://www.tiktok.com/@1and1otc Ruben Rojas  https://www.instagram.com/rubenrojas/?hl=en https://twitter.com/RubenRojas https://www.facebook.com/LiveThroughLoveRubenRojas/ https://www.tiktok.com/@rubenrojas_ https://rubenrojas.com/

In this conversation, we talk about that hero's journey, the ups and downs, building up again from bankruptcy and, ultimately, becoming known throughout L.A. and far beyond as an artist who inspires others to live through love. We talk about love in the context of masculinity, strength and weakness. We talk about vulnerability and ego and what really matters. And we get into that personal practice of shifting from fear to love, so that we actually can and do act from a place of love and make the world a better place. Among other things. “I want to see more people come from the action of using love. And again, that's from being proactive. That's finding solutions. That is, you know, listening to people, seeing them, and letting them be heard.” In this episode, Chase speaks with Ruben Rojas, a Los Angeles-born artist and muralist, about his clothing line and print collection, Live Through Love, his art, and all things love. His mission is to ignite creativity and inspire others to see the world through the lens of love. Ruben is also the author of the book of the same name- Live Through Love. In this conversation today, Ruben walks us through his journey in life so far, talks about the switches he made in his career, and how he finally decided to start with his current business. He shares that art had always been a significant part of his life- he enjoyed doodling and painting back during his school days. While at college, one of his friends suggested he try real estate investment, and he went on for it. But the business took him to the extent of bankruptcy, and he put an end to it.  Later, he tried his hands on investment and retirement services. That, too, did not go as expected. It took years of testing and switching careers to finally get him to start with what he has always been passionate about- art and the idea of love. In his own words, "I would say it wasn't that clear. It was like, the I never is running through quicksand. So at first, it was really, can I do this? What does this look like? Can I sustain myself? Can I build a life off of this?" The benefit Ruben says he's had in everything is he has always been self-employed. So whether it was as a personal trainer or as someone making sales commissions or in real estate, everything was still on him. He has never had a salary and never had to worry about just being comfortable in that space. Ruben's decision to take on mural gigs and mural projects happened because he wanted to know if he could make money out of that. He wanted to know if that could help him create a business and sustain something while he continued to build. A valuable takeaway is Ruben's advice on treating yourself with kindness, whether or not your choice in career gives you the anticipated success. "Maybe that wasn't your thing at the moment. And it's just another step to that next thing that actually gets you to where you need to go."  Follow Ruben @rubenrojas Follow Chase @chase_chewning Key Highlights Ruben shares his backstory with us- trying and pursuing different professions before venturing into his dream business. Holding on to something that keeps you from greatness, opportunity, and believing in yourself is worthless. When you're on a service, the return is the validation and the acknowledgment you get from them. Living a life ever forward, to Ruben, means taking responsibility for your decisions and actions. If we take responsibility for our actions, no one can let us down.  Knowing without doing is the same thing as not knowing. Ruben shares his thoughts on what love is and what it is not. Today I’ve got the authors of a worldwide artistic movement. Evan Meyer and Ruben Rojas. Evan, the founder of a highly successful SAS company, and Ruben with a finance background.  Both artists, who were able to use their business knowledge and scaling abilities to turn this hobby of making “ugly” walls beautiful and run a successful nonprofit and for-profit called Beautify Earth...which is responsible for painting murals for over 60 brands, in over 80 cities worldwide, over a hundred local NGO’s with over 10,000 murals! Ruben’s last oh shit moment. Evan’s oh shit and hell yea moment. We’re gonna talk about making ugly things beautiful, about art, we’re gonna talk about making money with art, bureaucracies, and loops, but first Sebastian wants to know how Evan and Ruben met. Evan and Ruben share a bed together. Comfortable of masculine men to share close spaces. Importance of sharing vulnerability amongst business partners. A moment in Evan and Ruben’s initial friendship when they realized they could potentially be business partners. Beautify Lincoln in Venice, CA. The very first Beautify Earth project. Why should we beautify cities and boring or ugly walls? Besides the obvious visual aspect. Started mini projects like Beautify Williamsburg and other cities. Seb asks, “How can you just reach out to cities? It sounds very bureaucratic to get permits and things like that can you give any advice to anyone trying to get through to a city for a specific project?” Ruben was in finance and at one point realizes, “Hey I can be an artist full time and make a living out of this.” Seb asks, “How does it feel when you realize you can make money doing something that drives you like art? Especially with art… seems very fairy tale.” Evan’s successful SAS company Ride Amigos and handling a side hustle and passion. Where is Beautify Earth at today? Beautify Earth’s for-profit sector. Importance of implementing a for-profit aspect in order to scale.  Importance of implementing operations into such a large scale art project and bring in skills from “traditional” business into scaling art and creativity.  Showing companies what badass wall art can do for them. Ruben’s favorite art installation. How artists can get in touch with Beautify to become a part of the team in their own city. Evan and Ruben give their 2 most important traits for a conscious leader to embody. Visit Beautify Earth and find Beautify on Instagram.  Connect with Sebastian on Instagram SebastianNaum.com

Dealing with Uncertainty (0:00:00) First the pandemic and now riots across the country... I feel like I can't ever leave my house again! 2020 has been full of disaster to say the least, and who knows what the rest of the year holds or what we'll encounter in 5 or 10 years. Even the world's greatest scientists, medical workers and politicians working at full speed to help us avoid future calamities don't know when all of this will end. But even in the face of extreme uncertainty, we can be mindful and navigate our way through our tumultuous world. Joining us this morning is friend of the show Dr. Lara Fielding, a clinical psychologist, here with us to discuss some mindful practices for staying mentally afloat amidst a world of uncertainty.   Lisa's Adventure Club Giveaway (0:15:47) Lisa and Richie give away the second Annual National Parks pass of the summer. You can enter for a chance to win at byuradio.org/lisa.   True Crime Fascination (0:18:55) Making A Murderer. Criminal Minds. Hawaii Five-O. Television stations are obsessed with crime and so are we. Do you ever wonder if that's a little weird? How can we enjoy learning about something that's so horrible? There are plenty of reasons and most psychologists say that it's completely normal. But still, it makes us wonder, where does the fascination come from? With us today, we have Dr. Paul Mattiuzzi, a recently-retired forensic criminal psychologist of 30 years from San Francisco, California.   Murals against COVID-19 (0:35:00) There is some really cool urban art in our cities. They make the city more beautiful, give our streets more personality, and it gives us a fun reason to take a picture next to a painted wall. But can they do more than just make a bland wall look more interesting? That's exactly what Ruben Rojas believes. He's an artist and activist whose murals can be seen in cities around the world. His “mission is to ignite creativity and inspire others to see the world through the lens of love” and recently he started a campaign to create 1000 murals on closed businesses in Santa Monica in response to the coronavirus.   Improving Sleep Schedules (0:52:48) I think sleeping is the best part of everyone's day—or at least it's the best part of mine. Unfortunately, so many things can get in the way of getting a good night's rest. Work, kids, or even just getting into a bad pattern of going to bed late. So, what can we do to fix our sleep schedule? Here to share her advice with us is sleep expert Dr. Candice Alfano.   Healthy Summer Eating (1:11:08) When I think of summer foods, my thoughts immediately go to hot dogs, hamburgers, and other things I can cook on the grill. While these foods are delicious, sometimes I feel like branching out and eating something lighter and healthier. Since it's summer and we're all looking to be the fittest versions of ourselves so we can hike, swim, camp, and play...we thought it was the perfect time to talk about making our summer eating healthier, fresher, and a little more unique. So, I want to welcome Bonnie Taub-Dix into this conversation to share her advice. She's a Health & Wellness Contributor for TODAY.com, US News & World Report, and Livestrong.com.   How Safe is Takeout? (1:28:22) One of the hardest-hit industries in the midst of the Corona virus has been the restaurant industry. Consequently, while dining in is no longer an option, we'vebeen heartily encouraged to support local restaurant through pick-up and delivery options. This begs the question, however, how safe is it really to order take-out? Dr. Don Schaffner, professor of predictive food microbiology and quantitative microbial risk assessment at Rutgers University, is here to answer that question.   Weekend Review (1:39:06) Richie discusses what there is to do this weekend, from new shows on streaming services to the New York Times Bestseller list.

In this episode, Ruben recalls how his friend, Meyer, who had a little movement called Beautify Lincoln, led him to his first mural. He shares how he went through depression while he was still working as a full-time financial advisor which he hated and how he overcame it when he went full-time to his artwork. His art has encouraged a lot of people to change for the better. These results are what's keeping him moving forward with his journey. “Don’t overthink it. Life is now. Don’t wait for the right time. Don’t wait for next year. Go do it, stop saying it.” In this episode, Ruben really deep dives into his story of how and why he started his influence. Ruben's story is inspirational and this episode is definitely worth a listen! Subscribe to our email newsletter to be notified of our upcoming live-streamed interviews! We are the sum of all moments in our life. Is it one moment that stands out that we can say, “This is why I am who I am,” or is it all those moments stacked up? Ruben had always had the athlete mentality of competition and that comes into all areas of his life. Exercising and training are the ways he eliminates stress in the morning. [4:00] Ruben is more goal-oriented than task-oriented. It’s good to know that you can put in effort and see results at the end of the day. [5:25] Ruben graduated with a degree in Exercise Science and he was doing tours of hospitals when he had the thought, “Did I want to be fat, bald, with $35,000 in debt and try to work out of that hole?” He met a guy who offered to get Ruben into real estate and he made $18,000 in his first month. He never looked back. [7:00] Ruben started in the mortgage industry and eventually branched out into real estate, then went on to buy properties and own over a million dollars in assets. Then 2008 happened. [8:40] When you are in your 20’s and making money in Los Angeles, you’re taught that what you have is how you measure success. Now Ruben operates differently and focuses more on the legacy he’s going to leave in the world. [9:40] Ruben witnessed plenty of fraud in the business but he ran his business over board. When everything started to crash, he began burning through his savings to cover his payroll and debts. Ultimately, Ruben had to declare bankruptcy in 2009. During that time he realized that he didn’t need fancy watches and shiny objects to define himself. [12:20] Ruben could have gone down the path of the victim but he chose not to. He knew he could succeed so he chose a different road. He was disenchanted with real estate and the shady practices and ended up in financial services. [15:40] Ruben went from one difficult self-employed commission sales position to another one. He did well initially, but he felt like he was in just another rat race and not happy about what he was doing. [17:40] One of the connecting factors that Ruben has had in everything he’s done in life is people. Pain points are how we adjust, grow, and evolve. While working in the financial services industry, Ruben realized that he was unhappy and depressed and needed to make a change. His friend invited him to an emotional intelligence workshop, which lead to Ruben’s life changing moment. [20:30] During this time in Ruben’s life, he was open to finding a solution. It was during this workshop that Ruben was doodling an image that would later become his first mural. It started out as Beautify Lincoln, which later became Beautify Earth. [22:00] Ruben didn’t realize at the time that the premise of the mural would later become the foundation for his work. Ruben knew how he was feeling at the time and he wanted a reminder that would help him shift how he was operating. [24:00] We are all mirrors of each other. Ruben realized that if he needed to see that message, someone else probably needed it too. He started thinking about what he needed to see and started making those messages with the faith that others needed it as well. [25:20] We have the opportunity to choose. Only we can make ourselves happy. We get to take responsibility for everything and not pass that off, and ultimately when you love you, that’s life. That’s when everything happens. You have got to love yourself to be able to do everything you can do for the world. [25:50] Own all your flaws, and all your skills. Part of how you love yourself is allowing others to give back to you. A good exercise is to write yourself a love letter. [27:30] Be open to other opinions and thought processes without judging. Realize that every single person is trying to do their best with the information they have at that moment. [28:55] Ruben had always been drawing and painting, but being an artist was never really part of the plan. [31:20] Ruben is trying to elicit an emotional reaction from people with his work. He grabs attention with color as a way to draw someone in. He pulls his inspiration from the emotions he feels himself and then puts that into his art. [34:30] Sometimes it’s hard for people to hear a message they need to hear and art is a way into people’s hearts. [36:05] At the time he created the first mural, Ruben was still working in the financial services industry, and being in both lead to him being mediocre at both. It took him having a conversation with himself and committing to the artist’s path for him to leave the services business. [39:00] He found success in all the other things he had put his mind to, so Ruben just had to shift his mindset and believe that he could also be successful as an artist. He started out slowly by connecting with people who had enjoyed his work. [41:00] What you’ve got to realize is that you have to stay true to your purpose and play the long game. When you play the short game you often sacrifice the exact thing that will lead to long-term success. You don’t have to be a “classical” artist, there are plenty of ways you can approach success. [44:15] One of the things that Ruben stills struggles with is self acknowledgement. Every project is special and unique with different impacts, but there were two that stood out. [47:50] One particular project focused on financial literacy which was something that really connected with Ruben. It was centered around goals and dreams and allowed kids to visualize their dreams and paint them into the mural. Another major project involved painting a mural inside of a prison. [53:00] Ruben is working on expanding his brand and building out his startup, essentially the AirBnB of murals. He’s taking what he learned with the non-profit and connecting artists so they can share their voice. [54:15] Aside from beautifying the marketplace, Ruben is focused on building out the community around his brand and changing mindsets. One of the things that drives Ruben is the belief that you have to aim for the stars.     Follow Ruben, join the movement of living through love. In 2013, Ruben Rojas traded in his suit for a paint brush and began transforming blank walls into unique, empowering messages that today are uplifting communities and challenging the public to create new dialogues. As an artist, muralist and activist, Ruben’s mission is to ignite creativity and inspire others to see the world through the lens of love.   By using the urban landscape as his canvas, Ruben encourages communities to change for the better through optimism and collaboration. These once vacant walls are now vibrant reminders that inspire those who see them to dream big, feel beautiful, live in possibility, and to love. Ruben’s murals can be seen in cities across the country and around the world from Paris to New York and Florida to Mississippi.  Ruben’s portfolio of work extends beyond murals. He is a TED speaker, helping spread the message of art creating impact, a product designer and also a corporate consultant. Ruben works with companies to help businesses give back, enhance workspaces and raise awareness on important issues. Past campaigns include clients such as Toms, Reebok, American Express, & GT’s Kombucha. Ruben is also co-founder of Beautify Earth, a nonprofit dedicated to putting an end to blighted walls and fixtures all over the world by empowering artists, encouraging social responsibility, and instilling community pride.

Ruben Rojas on Murals, Creating for Impact, & Avoiding Mediocrity Our lives are like a book. It’s a story comprised of chapters strung together which reach a conclusion. Thankfully, we’re the authors of our own story. We call the shots on how the next chapter will be written and how our story will end. When a chapter doesn’t fit the bigger picture that you see for yourself, you have the ability to recreate and reinvent yourself to change the plot of your story. Today’s guest was an all-star in the real estate and then the financial world. He’s experienced rock bottom and bankruptcy when the stock market crashed, which caused him to reinvent himself multiple times to get to where he is today. I’m talking about the newest homie in the Perspective Podcast family, Ruben Rojas. He's a lifestyle artist/muralist, activist, speaker, and creative jock (it’s always nice to find more of these rare hybrids) who's making plays in sunny California. Ruben’s mission is to create global change and to empower communities through the lens of love. He does this through his Non-Profit Beautify Earth which strives to be The Cure for Sad Walls. In today’s episode, Ruben dishes out wisdom nuggets on: Reinventing yourself and creating for a bigger purpose Investing time in yourself, your craft, and business Not living in the in-between worlds of mediocrity Showing up as your true self online and offline His tips, tricks, and process for paint murals, and more If you’re stuck in life and need some inspiration for writing your next chapter, then this episode with Ruben will no doubt empower you. Ruben Rojas is an international street artist whose art has impacted the world through powerful and simple messages that revolve around the idea of love.He joined Yogi Roth on the LIFE WITHOUT LIMITS podcast to share his transition into the art community from finance and how his art has impacted the top high school quarterbacks in the nation at the 2018 Elite 11 Quarterback competition. The 2018 theme for the Elite 11 was #iAm. The focus of Yogi, the host of the Elite 11, and the staff was to remind the high profile student-athletes that they are more than just quarterbacks. Ruben guided that conversation with his street art, as each athlete created a canvas that had their #iAm statement written on it. Ruben then combined each canvas into a mural that celebrated the journey of each QB and the 2018 Elite 11 class. It is titled, ‘I Am. We Are.'His conversation with Yogi will have you thinking about your path, offer you tools to seek your best self and inspire you, as Ruben says ‘nothing is impossible unless we say it is.'To see Ruben's art be sure to watch the Elite 11 documentary series later this summer on NFL Network and other digital platforms.Follow Ruben @RubenRojas or visit him at www.RubenRojas.com.For more #LifeWithoutLimits conversations visit www.YogiRoth.com or follow Yogi on Twitter @YogiRoth.
