Jack Viertel is an American theatrical producer and writer. During his 34 years at Jujamcyn Theaters from 1987 to 2021, he occupied positions including Creative Director and Senior Vice President. He was "conceiver of the longest running musical revue in Broadway history, Smokey Joe's Cafe, conceived the critically acclaimed After Midnight, and served as the dramaturg for Hairspray. The musical and movie The Prom were developed from his original concept." From 2000 to 2020, he was a producer at the Encores! series. Under his tenure, several Encores! productions transferred to Broadway, including After Midnight, The Apple Tree, Finian's Rainbow, and Gypsy. In 2003, he began lecturing at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts. He developed the content of his music theatre studies course into a book, The Secret Life of the American Musical, published in 2016. Reviews were largely positive, with The New York Times calling it "revelatory and entertaining." Broadway Melody traces three lives through the early ambitions and unlikely pathways that landed all of them in the same place at the same time - 1960s Broadway. Woven through its pages are the hits and flops, the making and breaking of careers, the destruction of three historic theater buildings, the plague of AIDS, the machinations of union bosses and producers, and, of course, the world outside this insular community - the audience that looks to Broadway for emotional thrills, for enlightenment, and for pure entertainment.Laced with humor and sadness, portraits of historical characters from The Street and a long view of the rise, fall and revival of Times Square itself, Broadway Melody stitches three lives - and three hearts - into the fabric of an endlessly compelling tale of the American theater.

The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

David Stone is a theatre producer. He had his first contact with the theatre business through an internship at Jujamcyn Theaters. Later he worked with Broadway producers Fran and Barry Weisler, before he had his first own production with the 1993 off-Broadway hit Family Secrets. Since 2003, he has produced the musical Wicked together with Marc E. Platt. As of 2012 the show had grossed 250 million USD. He is a member of the Board of Governors of The Broadway League and also the Board of Trustees of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids. Other shows he has produced include The Vagina Monologues, Next to Normal, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Hear the stories of those shows as well and a whole lot more including: Who he went to summer camp with (you’ll be amazed) and how they helped shape his theater career. What the theater must do in the face of the new administration (note – we recorded this podcast only two days after the election). How Next to Normal almost didn’t make it to Broadway, and why Dogfight heartbreakingly didn’t. The advice he got from the industry after his FIRST Broadway show closed in only one week (So many people would have given up right then and there). John Raymond Barker is an actor, singer, writer, and voice over artist living in NYC where he recently made his network television debut guest starring on Law & Order: SVU. New York theatre credits include several new works (including Lee Feldman’s Greene) and appearances throughout the cabaret and nightlife scene, including many at the historic Stonewall Inn. He co-wrote the devised work, Gold Coast, with Stages on the Sound for Metropolitan Playhouse’s Gilded Stage Festival under the guidance of Tectonic Theater Project’s Scott Barrow.  In January 2019, John made his network television debut guest starring as Karl Patton on Law & Order: SVU on NBC. Broadway is a community of hundreds and hundreds of employees who all help make its crazy wheel go round, eight times a week. And of all of the jobs, ushers talk to more of our ticket buyers than anyone. I reached out to my friends over at Jujamcyn Theaters and asked for their help in picking one of their experienced vets to help me understand what was happening on the front lines.
