As a boy aboard a ship to Canada, Karim Rashid won a children's art contest — with a picture of luggage. Today the Egyptian-born, New York-based Rashid is one of the best-known figures in the world of industrial design, creating products that are unusual, stylish and functional. From waste baskets and snow shovels to teacups and martini glasses, his distinctive, playful approach has won him many awards. But he argues above all for design that's democratic and relevant to our lives today. Karim Rashid spoke to Eleanor Wachtel in 2016.
On the third episode of Squaretalk, we chatted with Dylon York, ex-creative director of Corkcicle and now co-founder of Poolboy studio. Dylon shared his experience leading product collaborations with Disney, Karim Rashid, Rifle Paper Co, the secrets behind getting things done, as well as how to find a visual identity for your brand.
Our next guest is Chris Granneberg, an Industrial Designer based in LA. Chris studied Industrial Design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NYC where he graduated in 2004. Soon after graduating Chris joined Karim Rashid's studio in NYC where he was promoted to Product Director in 2009 managing the global Industrial Design projects and team. At Karim's, Chris collaborated and led hundreds of projects with brands including Samsung, LG, Asus, 3M, Unilever, Coca-Cola, Alessi, Orrefors and BoConcept. Leaving Karim's studio in 2013 Chris was recruited at the PepsiCo Design Center as one of the CDO's initial hires. At PepsiCo, Chris managed the Industrial Design component of global structural design projects for both foods and beverages for 3 years. In 2016 Chris relocated from Brooklyn to Los Angeles to launch his design studio. Thanks for tuning in, be on the lookout for our next podcast!
Karim Rashid, who believes “we are all born creative,” shares how his childlike sense of wonder has fueled his career as one of the most prolific industrial designers of our time.

As a co-founder of Method, Adam Lowry helped marry ultra-stylish packaging and environmentally friendly cleaning products to create one of the world’s most iconic consumer brands. After selling the company in 2015, however, Lowry wasn’t content to simply sail off into the sunset. In his next act, he’s trying to revolutionize the way people think about dairy alternatives with Ripple Foods, a maker of pea-based protein beverages and foods. Ripple has gotten off to a fast start, having captured the attention of consumers, retailers, and investors -- the company has pulled in $110 million in capital since 2014 -- with an array of innovative and nutritious alt-dairy products such as milks, creamers and yogurts. In an interview included in this episode, Lowry explored the development of both Method and Ripple and how lessons from the former factored into the foundation for the latter. He also shared his perspective on how the funding environment for CPG brands has changed, why it was important to hire a CEO early into Method’s life cycle, how the company attracted world-class designer Karim Rashid to its team, and how he manages work-life balance. Show notes: 3:12: Adam Lowry, Co-Founder, Ripple Foods/Method Products -- In a call with BevNET’s Ray Latif, Lowry explained how passion for environment led to the creation of Method, how the brand’s first meeting at Target didn’t go so well (the buyer gave Method “a snowball’s chance in hell”) and how the company persevered through constant challenges. He also discussed Ripple’s mission and its innovative technology, its potential interest in partnerships with large food companies, the brand’s edgy marketing initiatives, and why he believes that “raising money is not an indicator of success.” Brands in this episode: Ripple Foods, Method Products

In celebration of Ehrlich Architects winning the 2015 AIA Architecture Firm Award, we had Steven Ehrlich and Takashi Yanai in-studio to reflect back on the firm's history and their work with "multicultural modernism". We also discuss the feelings around Boston's US Olympic bid nomination, and former president Bill Clinton's appointment as keynote speaker to AIA's 2015 National Convention. We also dump a fair amount of schadenfreude on Karim Rashid. This episode also features the voice of reason, aka our legal correspondent Brian Newman, talking with Paul about the importance of contracts. And, partly inspired by this thread, we'd like to open the call for your architecture horror stories. Send them to us, along with your architectural legal questions, comments or questions about the podcast, via twitter #archinectsessions, email or call us at (213) 784-7421.
Judith explains her path to success. She tells us that she knows she is not the greatest at everything she gets wrapped up in, but she surrounds herself with a sub group of people that can help her. Many entrepreneurs would scoff and say they can't afford help, but Judith is quick to point out that there is always a way. If you can't afford a service, then barter. She tells us that communicating to your community, giving every customer the same attention, and a general attitude toward customer service. It's also about knowing your customer, developing a niche, and treating that customer really well. Greg sees a running theme in Boiling Point that in this flat world we can make international ripple effects from small cities. Dave is inspired by Judith's brilliant way of expressing things concisely and intelligently. Dave also notes that he is motivated by Judith's passion for telling not only her stories, but the stories of her clients and others in her community. Greg points out that Judith, Dave, and himself are fortunate to be able to be risky in a smaller market. He mentions that in a large community there isn't the same safety net of friends and community to back you up. Dave mentions, however, that some people may be scared to “fall on their face” in front of their friends and that being an entrepreneur is about the willingness to be vulnerable. For people like Judith, going for it is not an option. Also, Greg gets scolded by referring to the Karim Rashid chairs that Judith placed in his office as “plastic chairs”.
