Many of us have had some sort of summer depression, including loss of appetite, constant fatigue, increased irritability, sore throats, and swollen gums. If you have developed some of these symptoms, Traditional Chinese Medicine believes you have excessive heat in your body. TCM states that several factors may lead you to produce more heat, including hot temperatures, staying for too long in an air-conditioned room, sleeping late at night, having a spicy, salty, or meaty diet, or simply working too hard. In this edition, we have invited Liu Ziwei on our show. She is a well-known two-stringed fiddle performer in the nation. Today, she will kindly share several of her songs with us that are believed to have the ability to cool down the surplus heat in the liver, heart, kidneys, and spleen. These works were composed by the famed composer Yan Minmin.

With all the hot weather we have been having and the weather forecasters predicting more hot weather over the summer in this week's regular check up with Pharmacist Elizabeth Roddick from New Life Pharmacy in Glasgow we felt like it would be a good time to talk about how to keep cool and safe in the hot weather. Elizabeth began by explaining to Connect Radio's Toby Davey why the hot weather is particularly dangerous for older people. Elizabeth also outlined what symptoms people should be looking out for as signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion, what advice Elizabeth would give to people to keep cool and safe when the weather does turn hot again and how we can also look after our pets in the heat too. Also with the recent sad news of cold-water swimming tragedies, Elizabeth highlighted some of the dangers around cold-water swimming and the effects of cold-water shock. Elizabeth also mentioned about a new book coming out soon titled 'Quality of Life for Women over 50'and you can find out more about the book by visiting the following link - https://bit.ly/QualityLife-Kindle-UK To get in touch with Elizabeth Roddick email Elizabeth.r@newlifepharmacy.co.uk or for more information visit https://newlifepharmacy.co.uk. WBUR's Quincy Walters brings us a glimpse of how people are keeping cool in the ongoing heat wave.
The Pacific Northwest is enduring a record-setting heat wave, which has ignited a run on air conditioners. While AC isn’t known as an essential need in that region, its sudden widespread use stirs questions about whether the infrastructure can adapt. Also today, we look at the extended child tax credit’s effect on poverty, the Fed’s housing market tightrope and the first Black woman to get a Ph.D. in economics.

“Keep Cool with Coolidge” was one of the presidential campaign slogans for the 1924 election. What was so cool about Coolidge? Here in Episode 23, we give you our reasons why Calvin Coolidge gets our vote for the most underrated president in American history. Here's a few teasers – he was the first president to appoint a woman to the Federal Judiciary, he extended American citizenship to Native Americans, he proposed the first federal anti-lynching laws, he was the last president to pay down the national debt, and so much more. A man of very few words (a.k.a. Silent Cal,) who experienced heartbreaking personal tragedy while in office, Coolidge is the only president to be sworn into office by his own father and the only one to be sworn in at 3 o'clock in the morning. Once you lose your cool, you've lost all credibility. People will immediately stop listening and they'll simply start defending or reacting. It gets us nowhere. Holding on to our self-control is one of the most powerful things we can do. It's SO hard in a heated moment, but easier to do when our "why" is big enough. I can teach you.
