Welcome the Spring season and true New Year with this short guided meditation (pulled from our most recent Spring Equinox episode). We'll take a few minutes to ground and settle, connect without breath and sense of proprioception. Then we'll turn our attention toward Winter. Are there any loose ends to tie up? Anything that arose during the season that still needs our attention? Finally, we'll turn toward the warm glowing door of Spring, ripe with possibilities, vision, and an entire new year of living and loving. If you'd like more ways to honor the arrival of Spring (and the close of Winter) you can find more rituals from me here.In between episodes you can find me on Instagram and Tik Tok.
Today is the Vernal Equinox. We're promised incremental victories of light. But early spring is no darling — not here in the high desert. Here, she can be chafing and mercurial; she can show up in sputtering, immature fits and freezes; in mean winds that would cut down the most tender and flower-faced among us without reason.Earlier this week, the sky howled and turned the color of mud at mid-day. Cell phones blared out public safety warnings. Dust agitated at every seam. What's a nervous system to do? Have mercy on the tender-hearted, Lord — on the dream of apricots and cherries, and the boy at school pickup who is rubbing and rubbing his nose against the back of his chapped hand.Like you, I am learning to find refuge. I am learning to take shelter in the soft aliveness of my body; remembering in adulthood what came so easily and imaginatively to my younger self — how to build a fort, how to tuck into a small world of my own making. So, I gather a reading light, a ball of yarn, knitting needles, and a poetry collection, and I tent a wool blanket over my head to hole up for the duration. One thing I know for sure is how a poem can serve like the keel of a boat, offering stability and resistance against sideways forces. A poem — a few words that, when linked together at an angle just so, can carry us into and beyond their meaning. And so it is with this needfulness, under a blanket in my living room, that I come to Wordsworth's “Lines Written in Early Spring,” a meditation he wrote in 1798 on the joyful, interwoven consciousness of nature — a “thousand blended notes” of birdsong — and humanity's grievous failure to remember its place under the canopy of all things. In the grove where the speaker sits, twigs “spread out their fan,” flowers “enjoy the air,” and Nature, personified, is a force with a “holy plan.” But human beings, the speaker laments, have lost the splendrous sensibilities of spring: “If such be Nature's holy plan / Have I not reason to lament / What man has made of man?”It occurs to me that man has done many good things with his hands. I am thinking now of a live performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, or the sweater that Wendy-from-the-yarn-shop just masterfully knitted, or the perfectly packaged mini-waffles my friend Ted brought back from a recent trip to Japan. But much of the time, we get things at least half-wrong. Like seed-creatures, we struggle to find our way upward through hard ground. We move too quickly, unaware of our conditions, and make mistakes. We forget to pause and remember the purpose of our unearthing. And we forget the interweave, the garden of our original belonging. So, I'm teaching myself how to knit. Novice that I am, it's awkward work. It's near-in. I tink (a new word for me, a semordnilap that refers to the act of un-stitching) almost as often as I knit. I struggle to position my hands, to maintain the right angle, I poke around and lose count and then I have to begin again. And in all this seeming progress and unraveling, as I return to mistakes embedded long ago, a new pattern — peaceful and even elegant — is steadily emerging. Oh, nervous system, dear friend. I am un-stitching and stitching myself back together again. I am braiding threads of myself into an artwork of my own making, which is weaving me back into something greater than my own making. And when the thing is ready, I will hold it up in wonder. I will hold it to my cheek.Together, we are making sense of being human in an era of radical change. Your presence here matters. Gor is a planet, a counter Earth, that sits in orbit at the opposite side of the Sun to the Earth we inhabit. And on the Vernal Equinox, this marks the New Year for most Gorean cities. This is the kind of sci-fi, fantasy sword and sorcery that Chris despises, and Dave loves. So it's only right that Dave's pick to see us into the new year would be Gor! But there might be a wildcard in this 1987 loose adaptation which has the review for this much maligned Canon picture going a different way. The making of Gor (1987) was a quintessential Cannon Films production—big ambitions, tiny budget, and just a dash of chaos. Helmed by Fritz Kiersch (the bloke behind Children of the Corn), the film aimed to bring John Norman's Gorseries to life. Now, Norman's books are… let's say “divisive,” so the filmmakers wisely ditched the dodgy bits and went all-in on the swords, sandals, and overly shiny chest plates. Shot in South Africa, the production made the most of the sweeping landscapes, though "epic fantasy" occasionally veered into "amateur cosplay." Still, it had that scrappy Cannon charm, the kind of vibe that screams, "This'll look brilliant on VHS!" As for the cast, it was a mixed bag. Urbano Barberini and Rebecca Ferratti led the charge, while Oliver Reed—bless him—turned up to chew scenery like it owed him money. Rumor has it Reed's off-camera antics were just as entertaining as what made it into the final cut. The costumes looked like a sale at the world's least practical armour shop, and the effects… well, let's just say they tried. Despite the shoestring budget and dodgy execution, Gor carved out a weird little niche for itself among fantasy film enthusiasts, probably because it's so delightfully bonkers. It's the sort of film you stick on late at night with a few mates and some questionable snacks, knowing full well you're in for some glorious nonsense. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: Professor Tarl Cabot is a mild-mannered academic who is accidentally transported to the planet Gor, a savage world ruled by warlords and filled with brutal battles. Upon arrival, Tarl discovers that he's seen as a prophesied hero destined to free the oppressed people from the tyranny of the evil Sarm and his minions. Armed with a mysterious magical ring and a newfound knack for sword fighting, Tarl joins forces with a group of rebels, including the brave warrior Talena, to overthrow Sarm's regime. Along the way, Tarl must embrace his inner warrior, navigate treacherous alliances, and decide if he's willing to leave his old life behind to become the hero Gor desperately needs. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

Kindred know-it-alls Deon and Jay kick knowledge…f#@% it, you know where this is going. In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, kooky, knuckleheaded yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming thirty-ninth episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru J, so naturally, they went with K. The arrival of the spring equinox is a moment of rejuvenation and rebirth as flowers begin to bloom and sunlight warms the northern hemisphere. As the sun moves along the equator, it brings warmth and power, allowing us to welcome the joys of spring, including the beautiful flowers and greenery Mother Earth provides. This balance reminds us to take a break from our daily routines and reflect on the need for equilibrium in our lives. Let's use this opportunity to pause and embrace a new season with a fresh outlook. The spring equinox, which coincides with the beginning of Aries Season, is often celebrated and is referred to as the Astrological New Year. Being that action planet Mars governs the zodiac sign Aries, this time is known to set off the astrological year with a bang because it brings a lot of energy, desire, and passion to our hopes and intentions.Dealing with these intense and juxtaposing energies can be overwhelming, but there are ways to manage. As the sun transitions from Pisces to Aries, we move from water to fire, which can be a lot to handle. However, taking care of ourselves during this time is crucial. Here are some techniques to help recharge, reset, and restore our vibe through self-care during the spring equinox:Use a ball to release tense spots in the body like the back, shoulders, hips, and glutes. Just a few minutes every night while you're watching a show or talking on the phone can build a nice self care habit into your routine. You'll feel great every time. This will wash away emotional stress stored in the body from winter.Movement is medicine. Walk and stretch so that your joints — and entire spine and skeleton — keep moving and stay happy. Go out for a walk, connect with nature, and stretch out your body.Treat yourself with kindness. Challenge negative self-talk and replace it with affirming and supportive statements. Also, connect with supportive friends as it can be great to share your experiences and receive encouragement. Take occasional breaks from digital devices to reduce screen time and create a more serene environment for healing to be present and to find balance.Rest is the most important activity. We spend so much time outwardly and when we pause to offer ourselves some energy work, it's a very nurturing and internal act. By creating this moment in our days, we're emphasizing to our brains that this is important. So, the more we create these kinds of self-care, the more we're building up our self-awareness — which can really help boost any efforts to create new habits.Relax your mind and your body will follow. Sleep and Sorcery | Folklore & Fantasy-Inspired Sleep Stories
Bring the new season to life in this magical sleep story, perfect for enjoying on or near the Vernal Equinox. In tonight's story, as winter's bones melt into the softening earth, you rise to wake the first buds and usher a new season across the land. You are the Flower Fairy, the magical herald of spring, taking over for your wintry cousin and rousing the earth from its cold sleep. This is a companion to the Season 3 story “The Frost Fairy,” but you don't need to have heard that story to enjoy this one. Sleep & Sorcery is a folklore and fantasy-inspired sleep series. My name is Laurel, and I'll be your guide on tonight's fantastical journey. Sleep & Sorcery is one part bedtime story, one part guided meditation, and one part dreamy adventure. Listen to my voice for as long as it serves you, and when you're ready, feel free to let go of the story and relax into sleep. If you're still awake as the story comes to an end, I'll guide you through a body scan for rest and healing. -

In this episode of So Divine!, Stephanie and Megan explore the celestial landscape for March. They begin by discussing the New Moon in Pisces, and how, with a harmonious aspect to changing-patterns Uranus, there is the opportunity to expand our creative and spiritual horizons. They talk about the mid-month Neptune Cazimi, and how this boundary-blurring alignment may have us feeling extra sensitive and emotional. They note that the day that the Sun moves into Aries (the Vernal Equinox) messenger Mercury also comes together with the North Node in this activating sign, catalyzing communication that can fuel new inspirations. In addition to providing insights on the relationship-oriented Libra Lunar Eclipse that occurs later in the month, they offer an Eclipse Overview, so that you can move through this period of heightened energy with more awareness. Stephanie chooses the tarot card for the month at random, and surprise, surprise—it's the fiery Ace of Wands, which Megan used as an archetype earlier in the discussion to describe the Vernal Equinox.

"I was unsure how to find a way into the project until I found the bell sound - maybe from a tram or bus or something? - which worked really well as a simple rhythm as the bell pattern is quite syncopated and then the final 'beat' is a car door shutting. "It became quite hypnotic, so I decided to go with that feeling and try to capture an implied altered-state, hallucinogenic journey through the night market. "I then started reading about Hypatia the ancient Alexandrian mathematician and philosopher who was murdered for her 'pagan' beliefs - with one theory suggesting this took place on the vernal equinox - and so I thought I would tie the two things together." SPECIAL GUEST Brother Andre Marie Host of the ReConquest Show aired only on The Crusade Channel. Follow Brother on GAB and Twitter - @Brother_Andre Grant money and big donors - Church Triumphant Church Suffering Church Militant Christopher Derrick HEADLINE: In Praise of Triumphalism by Brother Andre Marie So what's wrong with triumphalism? I suspect that the enemy of triumphalism has a deeper problem, though. Triumphalism presumes there is something to be triumphal about. That would be the immense treasures of our Faith and its attendants: the good, the true, and the beautiful, wherever they are to be found; for these come from the Author of nature, who authored the supernatural order, too. Triumphalism also presumes that there exist evils over which we ought to triumph: the bad, the false, the ugly; sin, death, Satan; and their attendants — namely, whatever in the created order refuses to conform to God's holy will. These ought to be hated, opposed, and combated, while God and all that stands on the side of God ought to be loved. There is no middle position, no compromise: Love of God implies hatred of evil and the will to triumph over it. Lunar Cycle - HEADLINE: Sanctifying Time as the World Ends by Brother Andre Marie The Church's traditional liturgy sanctifies our time — the day, the week, the month, the season, the year. What is quite literally mundane and temporal is thus transformed into something heavenly and spiritual, an anticipation of our partaking in God's own eternity. At this time of the Catholic year when we look to the end of time, and also to its beginning again with the first Sunday of Advent next week, I would like to take a quick glance at how four natural divisions in the solar year coincide with four Christian feasts, how the Church dates Easter, how the beginning of the Church's year is determined, and, lastly, how our superior Gregorian calendar came to replace its Julian predecessor. “Praise Ye Him, O Sun and Moon” (Ps. 148:3) The four seasons are traditionally sanctified by the four sets of Ember Days, but there are also four feasts on the sanctoral cycle that touch upon the astronomical events that define those seasons, to wit: the Annunciation, March 25, corresponding roughly with the Vernal Equinox; the Nativity of John the Baptist, June 24, corresponding roughly with the Summer Solstice; the Conception of Saint John the Baptist, September 23, corresponding roughly with the Fall Equinox; and Christmas, December 25, corresponding roughly with the Winter Solstice. There is some variation on the exact dating of these quarterly astronomical events, and there are useful tables online, like this one, which give the dates with astronomical precision. THERE ARE 4 FEASTS The 24th and last Sunday after Pentecost. Sanctoral Cycle - Saints Cycle actually begins today! Temporal Cycle - Vernal (Spring) Equinox: March 20 (Near the Annunciation, March 25) Summer Solstice: June 21 (Near the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist: June 24) Autumnal (Fall) Equinox: September 23 (The exact date of the Conception of Saint John the Baptist: September 23) Winter Solstice: December 21 (Near Christmas: December 25) 4 Feasts that fall on or very near to those 4 astrological events. First day of Creation - It comes down to hours and seconds! They had to calculate it, map it, chart it… There is an edifying First Council of Nicaea - defended the date when Easter is but they said Rome will tell the world WHEN Easter is but the Egyptians will tell Rome when the Equinox is. 25th of December HEADLINE: In Defense of Christmas by Brother Andre Marie According to St. John Chrysostom, the foundation for the Nativity occurring on the 25th of December is a strong one. In a Christmas Sermon, he shows that the Western Chruches had, from the very commencement of Christianity, kept the Feast on that day.

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, this was marked by the arrival of the Vernal Equinox (otherwise known as the “First Point of Aries“). If it's been a nasty winter where you are, then you have our sympathy. On the bright side, though, it's almost over — spring arrives in the northern hemisphere today. That doesn't mean the weather will change overnight. The shift of the seasons is a long, slow process, not something that happens with the flip of a switch. It's governed by the steady progression of the Sun across the sky, which is the result of the changing angle between the Sun and Earth's poles. At the start of spring — the vernal equinox — the Sun crosses the equator from south to north. Neither pole dips toward the Sun, so the entire planet will see roughly equal amounts of daylight and darkness. Over the next three months, though, as Earth continues in its orbit around the Sun, the north pole will gradually dip toward the Sun. That will bring longer, warmer days to the northern hemisphere, and shorter, cooler ones to the southern hemisphere. It'll also bring non-stop sunshine to the north pole — a “day” that will stretch almost six months from sunrise to sunset. One other item of note is that the Sun rises due east and sets due west on the equinox. That's not the case at other times of the year. As the Sun moves northward across the sky, its rising and setting points move northward, too. So the equinox is a good time to get your bearings right here on Earth — all part of the constant cycle of the seasons. Another cycle in the sky tomorrow. Happy New Year! Or is it? While large parts of the world celebrate the start of a new calendar year on January 1st, much of the world celebrates the New Year at other times. Many cultures base their New Year on events in Nature, astronomical events, or a combination of both.In this episode, Thom explains the basis for the Vedic New Year and the rationale behind it. While it isn't celebrated as ‘enthusiastically' as New Year is in the West, it marks a significant stage in the rhythm of life and is worthy of our attention each time it comes around, even if we have another New Year celebration that's more significant to us.Episode Highlights:[00:45] The Gregorian Calendar[01:41] Cues From Nature[03:24] Solstices and Equinoxes[04:46] Yuletide[05:51] Gap Week[07:39] Vernal Equinox[09:01] Spring - When We See the Fecundity of the Earth[10:47] Creating Additional JoyUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoleshttps://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/
