When we think about gorgeous mid-century homes, many of us picture a glass wall separating the living room from a patio and lush backyard. Or a sunken living room that flows from the formal entry. Glass. Open spaces with exposed structure. Screens that allow a peek through to the next space. Stone that seems to continue seamlessly from the exterior through to the central fireplace. This amazing flow from one space to the next and out into the yard is definitely a feature of high-end mid-century homes. But it can also be a feature of your (and my!) simple, builder-grade ranch. In Today's Episode You'll Hear:How to improve flow without blowing out a wall. Why it's important to bring the outside in. Where materials can make the difference. “A couple things, one I do want to say is, yes, networking has definitely helped open a lot of doors and the more you are in this profession, the more you realize you can do with our degree and that you really shouldn't limit yourself. And I think being open to opportunity allows you to also be open to continuing to find joy and sustainability in this profession. So, I just want to emphasize that because it is something that I feel really, really strongly about.”Our guest on this episode of My Veterinary Life Podcast is Dr. Tannetje Crocker. Many of you may already know Dr. Crocker from social media. She is a force of positivity in the veterinary social media space. Time for a real "Open Concept" podcast! In this episode of PodGis, Val excitedly shares her new housing arrangement; debriefs about her experience writing for "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" and how it all started with her feet somehow; the mental anguish or trying to look sexy and the 22 Minute afterparty; an awkward and baffling encounter at a public bathroom that Val CANNOT get out of her head; minimizing your life; her current struggling of "turning off the funny" in sexy situations; and finally, Val tries her best to tackle the news story regarding the trans high school teacher who showed up to her classroom with gratuitous, cartoonishly large prosthetic breasts. Stay cool and open concept, and never, ever apologize for loving marble.

As the open-concept office proliferated, people took work away from the office to find quieter places where they could think. It's no surprise to me that millions of people have fallen in love with working from home. But, if we need to be in the office, shouldn't we have the option of neurologically safe spaces. You will have heard a lot about that with HoK design principals in episode 2. If you have been following along on my house hunting journey, then you know what I mean when I say that I have a new online boyfriend and just had my first date. That's a house, of course. It's this beautiful yellow house with teal shutters and a cottage in the backyard in the Connecticut area. I'm obsessed! I wasn't allowed to go see this house for two weeks, but I have finally been able to take a look inside. We just got over covid, and with it being Memorial Day weekend, I decided to pack up the kids to hike a nature trail right by the beautiful yellow house to take a peek at it. My boyfriend looked amazing, but the catch is that we couldn't look at one room inside the house. No one is allowed to look until it is sold. Who knows what I'm getting into with this whole online dating thing, but I'm planning to put an offer in on it tomorrow even though my husband hasn't seen it yet. That's just how I roll! To help keep my mind off of my new boyfriend, let's answer some of the questions you've sent me in the mailbag. Open-plan homes with great rooms that combine the kitchen, dining room, and living room make smart use of space, increase natural light and make it easy for family and friends to be together. However, with few walls or defined borders and with clear sightlines from one space to another, open-plan rooms can be tricky to decorate. It's a challenge to strike a good balance between cohesiveness and separation. This week we'll discuss some common mistakes people make when decorating open floor plans and we'll go over how we can steer clear of those mistakes. Show notes at BYHYU.com www.facebook.com/BYHYU
Shared workspaces (including hot-desking) is a hot topic, pun intended, especially today with returning to work with hybrid work models. There are a number of reasons why an organization may choose to go-forward with something like this.

Today we talk about the things that really make the open concept work and how to define those spaces. We discuss our opinions on open concept versus segmentation of rooms and the benefits or advantages of each. We bring up the fact that an open concept can often get loud, so we provide solutions for ways to dampen that sound like adding drapes and rugs to absorb the sound. We answer a question about how to create more intimacy in an open floor plan by using rugs and good, creative space planning. We talk about how large rooms usually turn into a space of multiple smaller conversations and how that can help optimize the space. Open concept vs. segmentation of rooms 2:11How to dampen sound when things get noisy 5:13Tips on how to create more intimacy on an open floor plan 14:27The Keeping Room 22:10Should the flooring all be the same? Or should there be transitions between the spaces? 24:42“The more you can kind of angle things in there in an interesting conversation, people can sit down and naturally see each other’s faces and not be squared off like soldiers. A new bar in St. Louis, Missouri is shaking up the scene with a concept we haven't yet seen. Customers aren't charged by the glass – but by the hour. The new bar is appropriately named "Open Concept," and the website says for an average price of $10 an hour, you can drink as much as you can legally handle. Join us on The Porch as Johnny opens a mysterious package and horrifying chaos breaks loose.
It only took about the first minute for Honch to get into puking up after drinking old timey alcohol after reference to the movie National Lampoon's Senior Trip. And speaking of movies, Honch watched the latest John Wick film and decided to give us a piece of his mind. John Wick 1 (was awesome), John Wick 2 (was awesome), and apparently the movie is made for Russians? John Wick 3...12 hours of going after Russians again and something about a dog. After ranting about how many movie characters can attach eachother, we immediately get into creepy things to say to people while walking by. There is a bar called the "Open Concept", which instead of charging you every time you want a drink, they have a pay by the hour drinking deal. Could you survive it? And do Amish people drink?Listen and Subscribe On:iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dont-tell-our-wives-warm-beer-and-cheap-comedy-and-news-ish/id1355526064Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2PKE9J2XIDd13xsCzvu5EVGoogle: https://podcasts.google.com/?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5idXp6c3Byb3V0LmNvbS8xNjAwODIucnNziHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/31084705Pocket Cast: http://pca.st/itunes/1355526064Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=436282&refid=stprCastro: https://castro.fm/itunes/1355526064Castbox: http://castbox.fm/vic/1355526064?ref=buzzsproutRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/160082.rss

In this episode of Colorful Conversations, Thea, Tasha, and Joe discuss open concept kitchens and how to decide if this design concept is right for you, what pros and cons to think about, and how to go about making it happen! If you are a new listener to Colorful Conversations, we would love to hear from you. You can find us 24/7 on Instagram @tasha.kaleidoscope and on Facebook at Kaleidoscope Living. You can also check out our YouTube channel. As a thank you for listening, we have an awesome FREE guide called “5 Easy Steps to Design A Room You Love.” Text "DESIGNTIPS" to 44222 and you will get the guide in your inbox! In this episode:0:33 – Today, we’re going to talk about open concept kitchens and how to decide if it works for your home and your life. But first, updates from the homefront. Tasha discusses her life-changing discovery of high waisted jeans and how great they make her look (very flattering) and feel (they’re super comfortable)! For Joe, he highlights their nightly reading of Harry Potter with their girls. Thea recommends buying the illustrated version of Harry Potter to make it more exciting for the kids.3:24 – On to the “Newlywed” style questions (even though Tasha and Joe are heading into their 17th anniversary). Thea asks Tasha what she thinks is Joe’s favorite room in the house. Tasha guesses that it’s the family room because it houses the “famous” recliner, they finally have everything situated how they want it, and he just loves it… and Joe agrees! Joe guesses that Tasha’s favorite room is the dining room because the renovation is finished, with new paint, bookshelves, and lighting, so everything looks great. Joe is spot on with his guess!5:27 - This is not an ordinary podcast. Make sure you’re following on Instagram @tasha.kaleidoscope because that’s where we announce our upcoming topics and where you can submit your questions for us to answer. If we pick your question to be on the podcast, we’ll send you a free gift! We got a lot of great questions for this episode’s topic, so be sure to keep that up! Also, if you want to see the video footage and behind-the-scenes from any of our episodes, be sure to catch up with us on our YouTube channel.6:15 - Okay, let’s get into everything about open concept kitchens. Joe starts with a definition of an open kitchen design: this idea mainly applies to kitchens with a lack of walls that divide the kitchen from the family room and/or dining room. It’s more commonly known today as “open concept” or an “open floor plan.” The main feature (or lack thereof) is the absence of walls between the kitchen and other living spaces. Open concept living spaces are all the rage right now on TV and social media.8:01 - Today, we want to talk about the practical considerations of having and living in an open concept space, and deciding if having an open concept kitchen actually works for you. Joe brings up that he found over 77,000 online advice discussions on the topic “open plan help.” In Tasha’s research for the episode, she found an article (linked in the show notes) titled “Is 2018 the Beginning of the End of the Open Concept Floor Plan,” and Tasha fully believes that walls will be making a comeback. The article notes that brokers, designers, and architects have noticed that an increasing number of buyers are looking for closed floor plans or hybrid floor plans, which provide at least some separation between rooms.9:41 - First, let’s take a quick break to hear a word from our sponsor… Do any of these words apply to how you feel about your house: uninspired, embarrassed, tired, boring, overwhelmed? If you’re looking for design advice to change those words, you need to check out Designer In A Binder! To purchase Designer in a Binder, visit www.designerinabinder.com. And as a big thank you for listening, you can enter the code PODCAST to receive 25% off either package.10:49 - We’re back and we’re going to discuss the pros and cons of open kitchen design. Tasha starts on the positive with a pro, explaining that open concept can be a great way to make a small space or small home feel much larger. Small spaces can feel closed in by walls, so removing them can visually open up the space and make it feel bigger. Joe jumps in with another pro, saying that opening the space brings the rooms together which in turn brings your family together, making you feel more connected to the people in the house.12:42 - Another pro from Tasha is that an open concept can help create a great space for easier socializing and entertaining. Having an open kitchen design means guests can enjoy themselves in the dining room or family room, while the host can prep food or dinner in the kitchen while still participating in the conversation. Joe’s pro point is the beautiful, open sightlines and how visually appealing an open concept space can look (with the proper staging and designing).14:03 - Tasha’s number one con for the open concept is the noise factor. Joe actually pointed this out to Tasha - he commented that it’s not super great listening to their kids’ cartoons on the TV while they’re preparing dinner or having a more adult conversation, and on the other hand, kitchen noises can be very loud and distracting if someone is trying to watch TV in the living room. Noise in an open space is a big consideration that many people don’t think about.16:30 - One of Joe’s cons about an open concept is the lack of privacy. If something is going on in the kitchen, like a conversation you want to be private or preparations that you’d rather do uninterrupted, having an open space can make that challenging. Tasha agrees, saying that her and Joe’s time cooking in the kitchen together is really their only one-on-one time to check in and chat with each other. This kind of separation and privacy may become even more important with older kids and teenagers in the house.18:37 - Tasha brings up another con. While open concept spaces look great on TV and in magazines, these spaces are super clean, staged well, and designed by professionals. In real life, people aren’t always tidy and clean and organized. If there are things not put away in the space, it can make an open concept space look really disorganized and dirty. An open concept kitchen design will make it so you can constantly see into your different living spaces, and real life is hard to keep clean 100% of the time.20:54 - Joe says if you’re thinking about renovating an existing house to make it an open concept floor plan, this means removing load-bearing walls and using the proper load-bearing beams, which are very expensive.21:22 - There can also be safety concerns with open concept spaces. Joe says that firefighters have found that fires spread faster in open concept homes due to the lack of walls. One fire safety survey found that 30 years ago, people had an average of 17 minutes to safely escape a house fire, because rooms were more compartmentalized and the fire could be contained easier. Today, people only have about 3 minutes to escape a house fire, largely due to how fast a fire can take over in an open concept house.22:32 - Tasha tackles a question submitted online from a follower. Dionne asks, “does the open concept kitchen enhance or deter from the family dinner conversation, given the available distractions like TV?” Tasha finds this to be a really interesting question that she hadn’t thought of this before. But it makes sense that distraction is possible from other rooms. Tasha explains that in their house, they and their kids have dinner together every night, and the children are expected to sit and participate until the meal is over. Dinner together is routine and “required family fun time.” For most people, Tasha thinks that there is potential that an open concept can take away from family time. However, you can implement a “no screens” rule at dinner, so no TV and no phones at dinner. It truly depends on your family, how you live together, and your house rules.27:55 - Joe talks about the path that they decided to take when it came to an open concept kitchen within their own house. Tasha says they initially were aiming for a much more open space, but after looking at some of the pros and cons, they decided to incorporate some walls and separation into their home’s floor plan. They decided to do a cased opening between the kitchen and dining room, allows for a 9 foot wide opening between the rooms.32:39 - Between the kitchen and the family room, Joe and Tasha have decided to open up the standard doorways to 6 feet wide. This way, they have the option of adding french doors if noise between the rooms becomes an issue. Joe says their dream door may be one of the sliding barn doors, but no decisions have been made yet.34:32 - Next time on Colorful Conversations, we’ll discuss love and renovations. As we dig into the 9th chapter of the book of Hebrews, we find an important teaching about the "Most Holy Place" - the most sacred of rooms. Fixer Upper: "Open Concept" by MVCC
You would think that the opposite would be true, but open concept offices are providing an environment where people are working and not talking as much.
In the drive to gain every advantage, it’s common for new chiropractors and docs struggling, to start their practice or make the switch to an open concept arrangement. The assumption is that the best and biggest practices (which are not one in the same) are built on an open floor plan in the check-up area. Is this true? Is the open concept practice the best approach to garner practice success? Is the open concept style even right for you? On this episode of Life By Design For Chiropractors we give you the pros and cons of the open style practice layout so you can decide if it’s right for you! What We Covered Open concept can be great, we wouldn’t have it any other way, but that doesn’t mean it’s right for you. There are plenty of successful offices with semi-open and fully closed spaces. Why do you want to operate in an open concept practice or change over to one? There’s a misconception that it’s ‘one of those things’ that busy offices do and it’s what makes them busy. Make sure your practice layout matches you and your personality and it’s not just a gimmick you think will short cut your success. Pros include: social proof, saves you repeating conversations, enables you to educate all at once, better flow, assuming you’re organized…you can serve higher volumes better, it changes the environment of your office. Cons include: it’s a potential disqualifier, patients might not feel like they can tell you uncomfortable things, it lacks privacy. How to make the change to open plan if you currently have closed rooms. Enjoy this episode! -- Jamie For full show notes visit: http://www.lifebydesignforchiropractors.com/open-concept

Small rooms, smaller closets, chamber pots and formal dining rooms. Welcome to another episode of Escrow Out Loud, our San Francisco Real Estate podcast. On this week’s Thanksgiving episode we talk about houses and house styles! The layout of a home often reflects the cultural values, attitudes or norms of the time period and what people want out of their houses has changed significantly in San Francisco over the years. The classic Victorian layout was all about lots of small rooms. Perhaps for heating purposes? Nowadays, everyone prefers the big open space that is the living/dining/kitchen area. Everyone knows when people get together the hub of action always seems to be in the kitchen! But do we prefer gas, electricity or induction in the said kitchen?Matt and Britton talk about how the house layouts changed from the Victorian era, through the 1920s/30s, to now. They share their favorite layouts, which leads to an interesting side-bar – why does the term ‘open concept’ irritate Britton so much? Finally, we reflect on how much we have to be thankful for this year. One of the things we are thankful for, of course, is all of you lovely people listening in! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Open concept rooms are also more light typically, and they need less furniture and less art. Richard Lynch - We talk with Country Music Recording Artist Richard Lynch about his brand new CD "A Better Way" and his career in Country Music.Todd Lemense - Many of us don't see that we sometimes have an ego. Ego's can kill relationships, advancement in life (professionally and personally), and can cause serious repercussions. Todd is an expert on ego and he will tell us how to recognize the issue and how to control the monster inside.CommentaryToday we talk about fads. We all remember the mullet, Z-Cavaricci's, Slap Bracelets, Koosh Balls, the Pet Rock and things like this. They were cool for a while but one day you wake up and suddenly they are yesterday's news. Unfortunately we tend to incorporate fads into our life to be "in" and "cool". As more fads take center stage like "Open Concept" and "Stainless Steel" appliances in houses, someday these will be lame like wainscot. Is it wise to add permanent fads into our construction? Sure they are artsy and fun but what happens when it's not cool anymore, how much will it cost you? Will you be able to sell that home with those "fads" in tact? We discuss this.
