Most contractors think warm weather helps speed up a pour—but what if that early strength is fooling you? In this episode of the Concrete Logic Podcast, host Seth Tandett is joined again by concrete chemist Bob Higgins to break down the real effects of high temperatures on concrete strength, durability, and long-term performance. They cover new science on curing, the shocking impact of temperature on cement hydration, and why most current standards are dangerously outdated. If you're pouring slabs in hot weather, this episode could save your project—and your reputation. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Is your summer concrete secretly sabotaging long-term strength? What actually happens to cement hydration when concrete gets too hot? Can high early strength be misleading—and even dangerous? Why is the surface of your slab the weakest link in hot weather pours? What's the truth about internal curing and how can it save your concrete? How does curing temperature affect concrete performance a year later? Are old curing standards putting your concrete projects at risk? Can insulation blankets and self-curing mixes solve the heat problem? The Summer season has come full circle again, that time of year where everyone enjoys being outside, especially in their gardens on a long, sunny day. Gardeners are still in full flow - planting out new beds, mowing their lawns and cajoling their vegetable gardens into burgeoning yields. It's a great time to be alive in horticulture as the show season reaches a crescendo, plant fairs almost every weekend threaten to empty your savings and open gardens throughout the UK inspire that next bit of work you will be doing in your own plot. As ever Lucy and Saul will bring you tales (and waffle) from their gardens, so join us every week for more horticultural high-jinx on Talking Heads. The Talking Heads podcast duo are glowing! With temperatures well into the twenties, gardening this week for Saul has mainly consisted of watering and seeking shade, whereas Lucy took to contracting Covid to avoid the heatwave! Irrigation can be a time-zapping exercise, so Lucy and Saul discuss their respective water management methods. With playdates aplenty, Lucy also turns her mind towards school holiday activities, and thankfully the RHS and Jane Perrone have come to her rescue. Wormeries, naturecrafts, bug hunts and more will help any family enjoy their garden this summer. A team of scientists in South Korea has made an extraordinary claim: they have discovered a room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor. This means that they have found a material that can conduct electricity perfectly under everyday conditions. This is a huge deal. If it's true, it could revolutionize many technologies. We could have perfectly efficient power grids, levitating trains, and commercially viable fusion reactors. The possibilities are endless. But the scientific community is taking this with a grain of salt. There have been many claims of room-temperature superconductors in the past, and they've all turned out to be false. So we need to be careful before we get too excited. The researchers behind this latest claim say that they've done their due diligence. They've repeated their experiments multiple times, and they've had their results peer-reviewed. But until their work is published in a peer-reviewed journal, we won't know for sure if they're right. So tune in to this thrilling chat between experimentalist Professor Inna Vishik of UC Davis and my colleague Professor Jorge Hirsch, a theorist and past guest here at UCSD.
