We revisit Denzel Washington's (Training Day, Remember the Titans, Malcolm X, Man on Fire, Fences, The Equalizer, Flight, Inside Man, The Book of Eli, The Magnificent Seven) towering performance as Frank Lucas, and Russell Crowe's (Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, L.A. Confidential, Master and Commander, The Nice Guys, Man of Steel, 3:10 to Yuma, Robin Hood, The Insider) gripping portrayal of Detective Richie Roberts. We break down unforgettable scenes like Frank Lucas' "My Man" moment, the bold "Blue Magic" confrontation, the intense court scenes, and the explosive final showdown, while also exploring the true story behind the movie's real-life crime saga. This gritty masterpiece blends powerful performances with an unflinching look at ambition, loyalty, and corruption in 1970s New York. (S4 Ep 17) Nina Simone- Sings the Blues (RCA)Released 1967, Recorded December 19-January 5, 1967Nina Simone Sings the Blues is a powerful, emotionally raw album that marked a significant shift in Nina Simone's career. Her first release with RCA Victor showcases her deep connection to the blues tradition, drawing influence from legends like Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday. With tracks like "Do I Move You?" and "Backlash Blues," inspired by Langston Hughes, Simone's music captures the racial tensions and personal struggles of the 1960s. Although it didn't chart highly, the album's authenticity and emotional depth solidified her place as one of America's greatest musical voices. The album blends jazz, blues, gospel, and soul, with Simone's poignant piano work and powerful vocals leading the way. Tracks like "I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl" and "Real Real” showcase her mastery of the genre and her unapologetic, bold musical style, influencing future artists like Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill.Signature Tracks: "My Man's Gone Now," "Backlash Blue," "I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl." Have you wondered what God is doing in the night? Has God seemed distant? Or disinterested? 'Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. ' Exodus 14:21 ESV God is working in the night until the morning dawns. He sees you. He is working on your behalf. Hold on, dear one. Don't give up. God is able to bring you the dry land. This week I celebrate eleven weeks of marriage to My Man, Earl Price. We have been having great communication about how we are doing. The challenges have become easier because we are serving each other with joy. This morning God led me to write Earl an email thanking him for the top 10 ways I have felt his love in the last 48 hours. As I reflected on the top ten ways I have felt Earl's deep love for me, they include all of the five love languages. I find that very interesting that God showed me clearly how Earl is learning to love me so well. Here are few examples of what I wrote to him this morning. Would you consider writing a love note to people in your life thanking them specifically how they are loving you in this current season? Even if it feels like so much darkness, be the bringer of light into the equation and see how the God of the Impossible works on your behalf. Acts of service—Earl brings me tea every morning Quality time—he is playing golf with me a few evenings a week instead of with his regular group to give me confidence on the course Gifts—he has ordered toilet paper on Amazon and it will arrive before we run out! Physical touch—This does not need much elaboration (HaHa) but we know this gift of touch is one God has given us. Words of Affirmation—I think this is maybe my strongest need and Earl is hitting a home run with this love language. He brags on my golf game and my cooking and my personality and who I am in God. My recipe for this week is so easy and so delicious. We are eating cleaner and healthier now for one week. Earl has lost a few pounds and my success is that I have not gained. Waiting for my metabolism to kick in to higher gear without sugar. Baked Chicken Pesto with Fresh Mozzarella Bake for 20-25 minutes at 400 degrees F. Lay unthowed chicken breasts (thinner are best, you can also use thighs) in a baking dish oils with olive or avocado oil. Pour fresh pesto sauce to cover each breast. (I use the fresh pesto from Costco.) Layer with fresh tomato slices. I used halved cherry tomatoes to cover each chicken breast. Bake for 20 minutes at 400 degrees F. Then remove from oven and add two slices of fresh mozzarella cheese on each breast and return to the oven for another 5 minutes or until melted. I doubled the recipe and had left-overs and it was as good the second night reheated. I served it with a high protein red lentil pasta and fresh no sugar marinara sauce. The red lentil pasta was not our favorite and not sure it was worth the high protein for the cardboard texture and taste. Haha! #easychicken #newrecipe #mozzarella #pestochicken #freshmozzarella #singanewsong #grievewell #golfgame #firsteighteen #Cookforhim #eathealthy #allnightlong #fivelovelanguages #newmarriage #enjoylife #hospitality #newrecipes #golfgame #learnsomethingnew #enjoy #prayer #hopelives #elevenweeks #relationshipgoals #marriagegoals #communication #listthegoodthings #godisworking #inthedarkness #allnight
Episode 446 - Belated 9th Anniversary with Jeff O'Neil, Industrial Arts & Hybrid Tonic Happy Monday, Thieves! We're a little late to our 9th anniversary show (blame, who else, Kennedy, My Man!) but we sat down with Jeff O'Neil last week and, boy, was it a fun episode. We pivoted to discussing Chief's latest venture, Hybrid Tonic, a THC-infused sparking hopped tonic and got pretty nerdy in the details. It was a great episode and hope you'll tune in. While you're at it, order some Hybrid and let us know what you think!***As always, you can email your questions, complaints, whimpers, or whines to us at stealthisbeerpodcast@gmail.com. Isn't it "people who DON'T need people are the luckiest people in the world?" It's the Gospel according to Barbra! Today we look at the role that made Barbara Streisand's early career: the role of Fanny Brice in Jule Styne & Bob Merrill's 1964 musical Funny Girl and the 1968 film directed by William Wyler. We talk about: The Greatest Star: The phenomenon of the original Fanny Brice, how Barbra got involved in the project, and where the line between ego, strength, and vanity lies. The Audience: The sacred relationship between performer and audience and Barbra's theory of audience (or—in a religious context—a congregation) as a truth barometer. The Patriarchy: Nick Arnstein & Fanny Brice's relationship, Barbra & her male collaborators, the creep factor of "You are Woman," and the dangerous myth of romantic love (attention straight people: beware writing your own vows!) The Parade: Is "Don't Rain on My Parade" a feminist anthem? The People: What's the theology of people who need people? Is this just a hymn to extroversion, or does it channel Archbishop Desmond Tutu's theology of ubuntu? You'll hear: – The 1968 Film Soundtrack: "I'm the Greatest Star," Omar Shariff and Barbra singing "You Are Woman, I am Man," "My Man," "Don't Rain on My Parade" and—of course—"People." Episode 461 - Tyler Wert, Blindhouse Beer Co. Happy Presidents' Day, Thieves! We're talking to Tyler Wert of Roanoke, Virginia's Blindhouse Beer Co. this week. We met Tyler back at the Industrial Arts Festival in 2019 when he was with another brewery and were happy to hear that he's opened his own spot in Kennedy, My Man's home state. We get into some trouble in the black glasses, once again. Tune in and let us know what you think!***As always, you can email your questions, complaints, whimpers, or whines to us at stealthisbeerpodcast@gmail.com. (Blame Kennedy, My Man, the lone New Yorker, who does 99% of the booking and barely sets foot in the state.) Today, though, we're happy to welcome Jason Goldstein of Icarus Brewing. Jason was around for an Icarus-Carton collab so we asked him to join us and it was a good time. We're back from the 6. For the first time we didn't break up a relationship. Instead we witnessed a beautiful (ringless) proposal. We recap a wild week in Toronto where Julian and Eddin had many drunken nights. Rory took the crew to the Daniel Caesar show where we all sang to each other. Staying on music, Adonis drops his “My Man” freestyle. We react to that and the new snippets from Jada's upcoming book. Meanwhile in the world of Youtube, Logan Paul and Dillon Danis have one of the worst televised boxing fights. SNL is back which leads to a discussion about Ice Spice's stage presence. Finally, we responded to two voicemails today. Who really invented rock n roll? The facts are clear—it was Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the Black queer gospel-influenced rock and roll Beyoncé of the 1930s and ‘40s. Music legends like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash stole her musical style without proper acknowledgement or credit. In a renaissance of sound, celebrity and high drama we salute the legend Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Drapetomaniax is created by Michael Harriot in collaboration between OtherTone, Sony Music Entertainment and Queer Media.
