[SPOILERS for all of "Picard" and SNW S.1 in this week's blog talk at the end] Everything's a bit familiar this week on "Voyager". First up: a heavy dose of "The Time Trap" and "Night" with a dash of "The Trouble With Tribbles" and "Concerning Flight" brings us "The Void", where Janeway has to introduce the concept of cooperation to some people who've forgotten it. After that, "The Killing Game" and "Fair Haven" get together and we get "Workforce", which still refuses to let Janeway just get a happy ending with a dude she's into. Also this week: warp core made a mess, evil is going to win, and technically part two of our kids in "Trek" talk but turns into a bit of a Paramount Plus roast. And rightly so, because they are the WORST. The Lesson:  Numbers don't speak untruths, and for a female minority in a bro-business like Hollywood movie production, they're sexy that way. Saga Elmohtasen has produced hundred million dollar productions, but regardless of how successful she is, she doesn't let it go to her head, remembering that it's her roots and natural attitude that lead her to be successful.  Notable Excerpt: "I don't take any of my work seriously, with all due repect, but I'm serious about my work. Do you see the dicotomy here? At the end of the day I'm a daughter, I'm a sister, I'm an auntie, I'm way more than a producer, and I don't take any of it seriously but I'm so dang serious about the job. Being able to sever those two has been a lifesaver."  The Guest: Saga Elmohtaseb is a seasoned Hollywood producer, consultant and professor.  With a passion for film, Saga has worked on box office hits such as The Devil Wears Prada, A Good Year,Eragon, Just Go With It, Jack & Jill, and Iron Man 2. Saga is the president of Hollywood-Consulting.com where she works closely with clients on productions from development to completion. She has been a professor at Chapman University's Dodge School of Film & TV for over 6 years now and teaches film & TV. Elected to the Académie Française in 1970, Ionesco remains among the most important dramatists of the 20th century. Ionesco was taken to France as an infant but returned to Romania in 1925. After obtaining a degree in French at the University of Bucharest, he worked for a doctorate in Paris (1939), where, after 1945, he made his home. While working as a proofreader, he decided to learn English; the formal, stilted commonplaces of his textbook inspired the masterly catalog of senseless platitudes that constitutes The Bald Soprano. In its most famous scene, two strangers—who are exchanging banalities about how the weather is faring, where they live, and how many children they have—stumble upon the astonishing discovery that they are indeed man and wife; it is a brilliant example of Ionesco's recurrent themes of self-estrangement and the difficulty of communication. Discover what makes Eugène Ionesco's The New Tenant a hallmark of the Theatre of the Absurd Discover what makes Eugène Ionesco's The New Tenant a hallmark of the Theatre of the AbsurdSee all videos for this article In rapid succession Ionesco wrote a number of plays, all developing the “antilogical” ideas of The Bald Soprano; these included brief and violently irrational sketches and also a series of more elaborate one-act plays in which many of his later themes—especially the fear and horror of death—begin to make their appearance. Among these, La Leçon (1951; The Lesson), Les Chaises (1952; The Chairs), and Le Nouveau Locataire (1955; The New Tenant) are notable successes. In The Lesson, a timid professor uses the meaning he assigns to words to establish tyrannical dominance over an eager female pupil. In The Chairs, an elderly couple await the arrival of an audience to hear the old man's last message to posterity, but only empty chairs accumulate on stage. Feeling confident that his message will be conveyed by an orator he has hired, the old man and his wife commit a double suicide. The orator turns out to be afflicted with aphasia, however, and can speak only gibberish. In contrast to these shorter works, it was only with difficulty that Ionesco mastered the techniques of the full-length play: Amédée (1954), Tueur sans gages (1959; The Killer), and Le Rhinocéros (1959; Rhinoceros) lack the dramatic unity that he finally achieved with Le Roi se meurt (1962; Exit the King). This success was followed by Le Piéton de l'air (1963; A Stroll in the Air). With La Soif et la faim (1966; Thirst and Hunger) he returned to a more fragmented type of construction. In the next decade he wrote Jeux de massacre (1970; Killing Game); Macbett (1972), a r

People like to claim video games inspire violence, but what if they can release violent impulses, instead? That's what the Hirogen that have taken "Voyager" and her crew captive aim to find out in "The Killing Game", parts one and two! Brainwashed into believing they are living in World War 2 France, much of the crew are living NPCs for a sadistic game. How will they break free before game over? Also this week: part debate, somehow quidditch, and the alien ships of the Delta Quadrant! It’s another great two-parter, in which we see our crew used as playthings for the Hirogen, whose only purpose is to hunt. Janeway is a French Underground leader, Seven is a torch singer, and Neelix is a badass Klingon, thanks to the holodeck. But we reserve our highest praise for Harry Kim, who had to heroically manage the ship and outwit the Hirogen. That guy deserves a promotion. Host Jean MacDonald with Jeff Gamet.

Will Voyager's extensive back catalogue of holodeck programs persuade the Hirogen that there's more to life than festooning your bulkheads with human skulls? Or will the Captain be forced (reluctantly) to kill Seven of Nine first?

With the war raging on, a discouraged Sisko is thinking about calling it quits, when the prophets intervene with a vision that recasts the DS9 crew in 1950s America, with Sisko as a struggling science fiction writer facing blatant racism.  This episode is a clear stab at dealing with racism even in our modern day.  So to help us with this one, we bring in friend of the show, and voice on Anti-Racism education, Jessica Eaton.  This is not just a normal episode of Beam Me Up; this is the most important episode we've ever done. Next Week: We are watching Star Trek: Voyager's “The Killing Game, Parts 1&2.”Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/beammeuppod)

“Bachelor #1 is a professional photographer. In his spare time, he likes skydiving, riding his motorcycle and killing women and young girls. Please welcome to the Dating Game….Rodney, Alcala.” Serial killer Rodney James Alcala murdered at least nine women and girls across the United States in the 1970s, though his true death toll could number more than 100. He spent time in prison for sexual assault and other crimes in the 1970s but continued to rape and kill when he was released. Autopsies of some Alcala's victims revealed that he would strangle women, then wait for them to regain consciousness before the final kill. Alcala also sometimes arranged the corpses of women he'd murdered in poses. Although sentenced to death, 3 times, he died of natural causes in July of 2021 before he could be executed. During his reign of terror, he managed to appear as a bachelor contestant on the then hit T.V. show, the Dating Game.
