Die Baha Men fragten im Jahr 2000 schon: Who Let The Dogs Out? Chris Hemmings is a Mancunian, he's a man from Manchester. This fact alone connotes a number of characteristics about how he grew up; proud, scrappy, and very much coded into a particular kind of British manhood. In this episode, we'll talk about the rules, expectations, entitlement, pain ... AND the positive possibilities of "Lad-Culture." How our upbringing, our schooling, and our early years shape and harden our attitudes about what it means to be boys and men, about how we see women and girls, about where we think our place is in the world as men. About waking up to our impacts in the world. About how repressing our emotions damages our physical, mental, and emotional health. And about how we can make real cultural changes for the young men in our lives. Some Key takeaways from this episode: Start talking & listening about the real stuff. Own your impacts. Work for self-forgiveness and accountability. Do the healing work you need to do to be able to see and own the real impacts of your behaviors. You don't have to know what to do next. It's OK. As most of you probably know, Italy defeated England in the Euros this week— and with that lost came a tirade of outcry by the football hooligans, which perfectly showed the toxicity of Lad Culture. This week, we broke down the history of Lad Culture and the way it links to toxic masculinity. Make sure to tune in to listen to a refined analysis of the problematic tropes of Lad Culture and the way it impacts society. Over half of all university students in the UK are reporting unwanted sexual behaviour perpetrated upon them by another student. How much does "Lad Culture" or what we at The RAP Project call "Laditude", contributes to this culture? How are universities responding to recent scandals involving toxic masculinity on campus? Are they doing enough to end gender-based violence and harassment? Are their actions making their campus’ safer? Deana Puccio, Co-Founder of The RAP Project, speaks to three university students, who openly discuss their experiences and offer some practical, positive strategies to create real change.

My guest this week has been listed as one of the ‘Wonder Women shaping 2020’ by the Irish Country Woman magazine, and I definitely agree. Dr Caroline West is passionate about creating spaces for calm, informed conversations about sex, and wants to banish shame and stigma from the bedroom. It is shocking to think sex education has not evolved all that much since I was a teenager in the 90s. We didn’t have access to the internet, so we remained clueless about all our unanswered questions. The legacy of that ignorance is that parents today still do not have the language to speak openly with their teenagers about sex. But rather than stay clueless like us 90s kids, today’s teens can just fill in the gaps by going online and finding a minefield of information on sex, including porn. And this often how they are ‘educating’ themselves on how to have sex. Caroline is on a mission to stop the cycle of ignorance, and to introduce positive sex education for all young people in Ireland. Topics discussed include: Sex education in the 1990s – EuroTrash and Cosmopolitan magazines contrasted with religious-led sex education classes Lad Culture of the nineties – in hindsight, not actually empowering for women Ireland – are we still a sex-negative society? Sex-Ed - should it be the domain of school teachers and religious orders? Click here to buy: https://adbl.co/2Zr1R4f Read by Paul McGann, Louise Brealey, Tania Rodrigues, Shvorne Marks, Jot Davies, David John, Dean Williamson and Charles Armstrong. Introduced by Daniel Rachel, and featuring audio-exclusive extracts from Daniel's source interviews. The nineties was the decade when British culture reclaimed its position at the artistic centre of the world. Not since the 'Swinging Sixties' had art, comedy, fashion, film, football, literature and music interwoven into a blooming of national self-confidence. It was the decade of Lad Culture and Girl Power; of Blur vs Oasis. When fashion runways shone with British talent, Young British Artists became household names, football was 'coming home' and British film went worldwide. From Old Labour's defeat in 1992 through to New Labour's historic landslide in 1997, Don't Look Back In Anger chronicles the Cool Britannia age when the country united through a resurgence of patriotism and a celebration of all things British. But it was also an era of false promises and misplaced trust, when the weight of substance was based on the airlessness of branding, spin and the first stirrings of celebrity culture. A decade that started with hope then ended with the death of the 'people's princess' and 9/11 - an event that redefined a new world order. Through sixty-seven voices that epitomise the decade - including Tony Blair, John Major, Noel Gallagher, Damon Albarn, Tracey Emin, Keith Allen, Meera Syal, David Baddiel, Irvine Welsh and Steve Coogan - we re-live the epic highs and crashing lows of one of the most eventful periods in British history. Today, in an age where identity dominates the national agenda, Don't Look Back In Anger is a necessary and compelling historical document.
Cricketer Alex Hepburn was jailed last month for raping a sleeping woman. The assault happened after Hepburn had set up a sexual conquest game on a WhatsApp group. The BBC’s Phil Mackie tells us about the trial, and we speak to lawyer Eleanor Law about the legal difficulties that arise when this kind of misogynistic behaviour goes to court. Plus self-confessed “reformed lad” Chris Hemmings explains why this culture exists and how best to tackle it. Producers: Duncan Barber and Seren Jones. Mixed by Nicolas Raufast. Editor: John Shields.
In this episode, I yell about Jordan Peterson's live shows, protestors and what it was actually like to be there. I also cover my latest theory on Lad Culture and the next evolution of Lewis Spears
Nick is joined by u/wqzu, a moderator of the subreddit r/trashy. They discuss the sub, cultural norms, chavs and lad culture, Brexit and the British political process and have a little fun at a few celebrities' expense. Special Guest: u/wqzu.

In GBA 313 we get better acquainted with Craig. Dr Craig is an academic working in the field of critical social psychology (which has a big dash of sociology within it) whose work focuses on Masculinities. As you may know I made a show about masculinity so we had a lot to talk about. However we didn't really know much about each other before we sat down, and the conversation is certainly influenced by this. In many ways I had an idea of how the conversation would go before we started recording and so part of this episode is me slowly realising it's a different conversation to the one I imagined. We talk about Craig's areas of research which include looking at the way that dancing and gender intersect, looking at Lad Culture within Universities and analyzing the way that men's magazines talk about penises.
