Making lemonade from the lemons of life is the theme to this week's Loose Ends. The comedian Omid Djalili was so incensed by having his shows cancelled after 9/11 due to his Middle Eastern heritage that he devised a stand-up tour called Namaste so he could let off steam as well as make us laugh. Elizabeth Day's How to Fail podcast is, ironically, a massive success, but she says her latest novel - a darkly humorous political satire - draws on her own feelings of being an outsider. Neil Morrissey had an ill-starred childhood but managed to head straight for the limelight in Men Behaving Badly, Line of Duty and is now playing Jacob Marley who brings redemption to Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. And Taskmaster contestant and comedian Ania Magliano attributes her personality to growing up playing with Sylvanian family toys rather than Barbies - find out how that inspired her new stand up show, Peach Fuzz. And a performance from Dracapella, a comedy retelling of the Dracula story, introduced by its writer Dan Patterson, the creator of Whose Line Is It Anyway?Producer: Olive Clancy Assistant producer: Samuel Nixon Technical Production: Giles Aspen and Gayl Gordon

In this episode, we dive headfirst into one of the most defining – and divisive – social phenomena of 1990s Britain: Lad Culture. From the beer-soaked pages of Loaded to the banter-fuelled chaos of TFI Friday, Lad Culture reshaped British masculinity, media, and nightlife in its own cheeky, irreverent image. Whether you loved it, hated it, or just got swept along with it, this cultural moment left a legacy that's still felt today. We trace its roots to the mid-90s launch of Loaded magazine, a publication that celebrated lager, football, music, and women with a wink and a smirk. With its tagline “For men who should know better,” the magazine ignited a publishing revolution and sparked a nationwide identity shift. Soon, the lads weren't just in magazines – they were all over our screens too, from the lovable oafs in Men Behaving Badly to the raucous party atmosphere of TFI Friday. Lad Culture wasn't confined to print and television. It bled into fashion, music, and the national psyche. Britpop bands like Oasis became lad anthems, while Paul Smith suits and Adidas Gazelles became part of the dress code. And of course, no discussion of Lad Culture would be complete without a visit to the pub – the spiritual home of the 90s lad and the birthplace of “banter” as both bonding ritual and social defence mechanism. But for all its charm and cultural clout, Lad Culture had a darker side. Its objectification of women, celebration of binge drinking, and paper-thin irony around political correctness drew increasing criticism as the decade progressed. As digital media rose and political realities shifted in the early 2000s, Lad Culture lost its edge – and its influence. Still, its impact lingers. From our advertising to our online discourse, echoes of Lad Culture remain part of how Britain talks, jokes, and remembers its recent past. In this episode, we unpack the rise and fall of the lads, and ask what their moment in the sun tells us about gender, identity, and the 1990s spirit of rebellion – both real and performative. Few sitcoms defined the 1990s quite like Men Behaving Badly. In this episode, we dive deep into Simon Nye's laddish comedy that helped shape a generation's humour—examining how it balanced crude jokes with surprising warmth, and why Gary and Tony's childish chaos was more endearing than offensive. Though some aspects haven't aged as gracefully, its cultural impact is undeniable. We explore the origins of the show, tracing it back to Nye's lesser-known novel and the sharp instincts of legendary producer Beryl Vertue. Her belief in the project led to a series that would become a post-watershed hit—moving from ITV to the BBC, where it truly found its voice. Vertue's influence wasn't just behind the scenes; her approach to nurturing cast and crew was rare and heartfelt. The chemistry between Martin Clunes and Neil Morrissey became the show's beating heart. We unpack how Morrissey's arrival as Tony transformed the show after Harry Enfield's original run as Dermot. Enfield's performance was strong—but Morrissey brought a laddish charm that made Men Behaving Badly an iconic bromance long before the term entered pop culture. From memorable episodes like In Bed with Dorothy to that unforgettable Kylie Minogue Comic Relief sketch, we celebrate the sitcom's most classic moments. We also touch on the lesser-known behind-the-scenes stories—like Simon Nye's own silent cameo and the US remake that never quite captured the magic. Finally, we reflect on the cast's lasting affection for the series and why calls for a reunion never quite die down. With heartfelt recollections from Clunes, Ash, and Nye himself, this episode is a love letter to one of the UK's most chaotic, lovable, and enduring comedies. Proverbs contrasts the wise man against three other types—the fool, the simpleton, and the evil one. But the good news of the gospel is that no one is stuck in these lesser categories. And how might they make this move? By fearing the Lord.
Our exit today has us realizing that our one vice is that we're too nice. This week, we are looking at a double feature of films of men behaving badly and "learning to be better people." First, we will talk about Tomcats, written and directed by Gregory Poirier. Next, we will talk about Shallow Hal, written by Sean Moynihan and the Farrelly Brothers and directed by the Farrelly Brothers.Along the way, we talk musicals we walked out of, The Royal Tenenbaums, lots of Farrelly Brothers, Dakota Fanning, Monkeybone, lazy filmmaking, and lots and lots of awful men. Bear with us this month, listeners, as we take a left turn down Duckett's Passage to talk about something a little different from our usual classic British horror. Nicholas Simon Lyndhurst, born April 1961, is an English actor who began his career as a child actor and is best known for his role as Rodney Trotter in the BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses, which ran from 1981 to 2003.PART ONE: Tonight's first topic covers his role as the time-travelling bigamist Gary Sparrow in the British sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart. Created by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran and produced by the BBC, Goodnight Sweetheart ran from 1993 to 1999, broadcasting a total of six series. The sitcom follows Gary Sparrow, an accidental time traveller living a double life through a time portal that connects 1990s London with 1940s wartime London. While the show's creators, who also made Birds of a Feather and The New Statesman, wrote most of the episodes, we chose to watch series six, episode one ("Mine's a Double") and episode five ("The 'Ouses in Between") because they had at least a tenuous link to our podcast's premise. These episodes were written by Gary Lawson and John Phelps (as a writing team) and Geoff Rowley, respectively. ‘Sweetheart featured Victor McGuire as Ron Wheatcroft, Gary's best friend in every episode of the show. McGuire is best known for playing Jack Boswell in Carla Lane's Bread. Related to our areas of interest, he appeared in an episode of Chernobyl, was a bar patron in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, played Police Officer No. 1 in 2005's Hellraiser: Hellworld, and portrayed Gerald Hardy in the 2012 Daniel Radcliffe version of The Woman in Black.Dervla Kirwan played Gary's wartime love interest and later wife, Phoebe, in the first three series before being replaced by Elizabeth Carling. Carling was briefly engaged to Neil Morrissey, whom she met while both were in the oft-mentioned Boon; she also appeared alongside him in an episode of the BBC sitcom Men Behaving Badly. After ‘Sweetheart, she released an album of wartime covers, also titled Goodnight Sweetheart. Similarly, the role of Gary's modern-day wife, Yvonne, was initially played by Michelle Holmes, who rose to prominence as Sue, one of the babysitters in Rita, Sue and Bob Too. After three seasons, she was replaced by Emma Amos, who appeared in Vera Drake, Bridget Jones's Diary, and an episode of Murder Most Horrid with Dawn French (cue Jon singing the theme tune). We've mentioned "Rear of the Year" a few times on this show, so it's worth noting that Amos was (according to Wikipedia — although Ross can't verify this) voted as having "TV's Best Legs" by readers of The Economist. PART TWO:We also listened to Channel Crossing by Rosemary Timperley. This was an episode of Haunted: Stories of the Supernatural, which ran for several years on the BBC World Service in the early 1980s and has since had a second life on Radio 4 Extra (thanks to Mysterious Magpie on YouTube for sharing some of these stories so we count listen to review it today). Rosemary Timperley was an author of over sixty novels and hundreds of short stories and feature articles, best known for her classic ghost stories The Mistress in Black and Christmas Meeting. Although primarily a mainstream writer, Timperley wrote numerous short stories that explored different aspects of the supernatural. She was well known for editing five volumes in a series of ghost story anthologies. Timperley also wrote several acclaimed radio and television scripts, and her short story Harry has been adapted to film multiple times. This episode featured Nicholas Lyndhurst as Jack, Peter Sallis as Edward, Patsy Rowlands as Frances, Gregory de Polnay as Gregory, and Sonia Fraser as Annabelle. Born in Mount Ephraim, New Jersey, Vaughn grew up in Collingswood, New Jersey, outside Philadelphia.[2][3] At age 6, his uncle gave him a Duane Eddy record and forever changed his life. He started playing the drums in a garage band when he was 12, then transitioned to the guitar. After school, he would go to a local department store, where he would borrow the guitars and practice over chord sheets.[4] He attended Audubon High School.[1]In 1983, he formed the Ben Vaughn Combo. The band was together for five years, releasing two albums and touring the U.S. several times. They received rave reviews in Rolling Stone and People magazines as well as video airplay on MTV. The attention inspired Marshall Crenshaw to record Vaughn's "I'm Sorry (But So Is Brenda Lee)" for his Downtown album. Vaughn embarked on a solo career in 1988, recording several critically acclaimed albums, touring extensively in Europe and the U.S., and receiving more MTV exposure. During that period he produced three records for the Elektra Records American Explorer series (Memphis rockabilly legend Charlie Feathers, Muscle Shoals country soul singer Arthur Alexander) and recorded "Cubist Blues" a collaboration with Alan Vega and Alex Chilton. He also scored two films (Favorite Mopar and Wild Girl's Go-Go Rama), as well as appeared as a frequent guest commentator on nationally syndicated radio shows Fresh Air and World Cafe. In 1995, Vaughn moved to L.A. and released "Instrumental Stylings," an album of instrumentals in a variety of styles. A guest appearance on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" led directly to being hired as the composer for the hit TV sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. That '70s Show soon followed, and for the next ten years, Vaughn would provide music for a dozen other TV shows and pilots (Men Behaving Badly, Normal, Ohio, Grounded for Life). He also provided scores for several films (Psycho Beach Party, The Independent, Scorpion Spring) and continued producing records (Ween, Los Straitjackets, Mark Olson of the Jayhawks, Nancy Sinatra, and the Swingers soundtrack CD). In this day and age, it's hard to believe how poorly informed men can be about women's sexual responses. This week, we've found a selection of odd male behaviors in relationships which we make an effort to explain. To wit, what would possess a man to send a list of "mistakes" made by a sexual partner after their first encounter? From my perspective, this only really makes sense if he wants her never to have sex with him again. If a man reveals his desire for a woman in terms that she might not find particularly alluring, is that his fault or hers? Especially in a people where men are increasingly encouraged to be honest about their feelings. Are women ready for the reality of young men's libidos? And, can a woman be too wet for oral? We get a lot of our questions from Reddit, so for our listeners' enjoyment, here are links to some of the questions we discussed this week: https://ymmv.me/166/list https://ymmv.me/166/virginity https://ymmv.me/166/condom https://ymmv.me/166/ridiculed https://ymmv.me/166/too-wet Twitter: @ymmvpod Facebook: ymmvpod Email: ymmvpod@gmail.com
Sarah had an unusual live comedy experience at the Demetri Martin special taping, and it took her back to her Real World days. She claims she did badly in her hip hop dance class despite being in the "top 25% of dancers." We learn about Sarah's traumatic and morbid Coachella experience, and we can't believe she's never shared this story before. We are fuming about the men who thought they should destroy a national monument by pushing rocks that are millions of years old off a cliff. A company is marketing weight loss drugs to men, and the difference between the ways they market to women are fascinating. Sarah tells us how someone stole rare bird feathers from a natural history museum to make fancy fly fishing flies, and it is one of the biggest "heists" in history. But the real take away from this episode is that Susie should probably not have wine during recordings because she cannot (!) stop laughing.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSusie on X: https://www.x.com/susie_meisterSarah on X: https://www.x.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:Get 20% off your first order when you go to https://www.liquid-iv.com and use code CANDY at checkout! To get Naked Wines' 6 bottle for $39.99 offer, head to https://nakedwines.com/BRAINCANDY and use code BRAINCANDY for both the code AND password!Get 20% OFF @honeylove by going to https://honeylove.com/BRAINCANDY! #honeylovepodSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
