Have you ever really thought about how some words you use to describe others are a bit ... rude? Have you ever noticed the words you use to describe groups of people you don't like? Have you ever noticed that the word for Germany in your language is different from the word Germans use? Have you ever seen the Wizard of Oz? And what's up with Chavs? In this episode I explore the world of exonyms and endonyms. We look at how language, and these language features in particular, reveals our nasty, tribal side. The side that makes us see ourselves us superior and our neighbours as inhuman. We see how words can be used to create enemies. And why "Paris" is pronounced oddly.

Whilst this began as a convenient way of getting himself off, over time, trainers, sneakers and shoes became associated with sexual pleasure. As Michael became more attuned to the subtleties of masculinity, he would make associations towards trainers, including the types of shoes that the popular boys at school would wear. Slowly over time, these symbols have become associated with tough, macho and popular men. Michael describes what occurs during a kink session with trainers. This led us to the primal animalistic mechanism underlying this trainers fetish. Wearing trainers himself, Michael strives to belong to a part of a group. Display as a peacock, signalling his same species, he gives off fake calls like a lyre bird trying to find his tribe. Spencer was one of our best sales people and regularly topped the KPI charts. Spencer told us about Thomas, and I agreed to meet with him, along with two of my colleagues. I had a good feeling about Thomas from the start. He was focused, he was eager, and he was extremely honest - to the point of overdoing it. He was gigantic, too. A house of a gent, with muscles for days and a close buzzcut that gave off the distinct impression that this was a man who could have done some serious damage if he had wanted to. He was a weightlifter and seemed to grow even more during the time I knew him. Despite his intimidating stature, he was easy-going, kind, patient, thoughtful, and very slow to anger. Our first meeting covered some changes he would need to make, including to his choice of words - but nothing major. His cultural profanity was charming in a social setting, but may have lost us some clients. He understood that, and agreed not to use that language in store. We agreed he would be a good addition to the team and brought him on board. On his first day, he was on time, tidy, and helpful. He mucked in, asked questions, and got on well with everyone on the team - except for the assistant manager of the store, David. David had an issue with Thomas' social grouping and proclaimed that “Chavs have no place in retail.” It's a common slur aimed at the hip-hop-centric London youth culture. It's offensive as slurs come, and did not sit well with Thomas. He came over to me and asked me what he should do about David. I advised him to not rise to the taunting, to learn to outperform David, and to keep telling me whenever these incidents occurred. For months, Thomas dealt with David's disdain and offensive language. Despite many interventions with David and Thomas, nothing improved. David kept up the offensive slurs, and Thomas' patience wore thin. Listen to the episode for more. Thirty years ago, miners went on strike across Britain to resist the Tory government's plans for sweeping pit closures. The strike remains the longest mass industrial dispute in British history - a war between Margaret Thatcher and the labour movement, and the miners’ union she branded "the enemy within" in particular. The strike’s outcome signalled a profound change in Britain’s social and economic landscape and its aftershocks can still be felt throughout the country today. The Enemy Within, Seumas Milne’s classic account of the miners’ strike and its aftermath, reveals the astonishing lengths to which Thatcher’s government and its security machine were prepared to go to destroy the power of the trade unions. Recently declassified government papers have provided further revelations about the secret war against organised labour and political dissent, reflected in today's undercover police operations. Seumas Milne will be joined in discussion by Arthur Scargill, former president of the NUM from 1982-2002, union organiser Ewa Jasiewicz, Owen Jones, author of Chavs, for a special event looking at the legacy of the miners’ strike and its lessons for the future, chaired by journalist Dawn Foster.

Writer and influential political commentator Owen Jones talks about his strong opposition to Government cuts and proposes a fight-back alternative to austerity. Owen Jones is a columnist, author and influential commentator associated with left-wing politics, he appears regularly on Question Time, Newsnight and in newspapers. In this talk, he examines the alleged failings of the current Government's austerity measures and proposes what some might consider a radical alternative. Owen Jones was born in Sheffield and grew up in Stockport. After graduating, he worked as a trade union and parliamentary researcher. His first book, Chavs: the Demonization of the Working Class, was published in June 2011. He writes a weekly column for the Independent, is a regular broadcaster and is a policy and media advisor to the trade union think tank Class. He is currently working on his second book, on power in Britain, for Penguin. He was named 2012 Stonewall Journalist of the Year and Young Writer of the Year at the 2013 Political Book Awards.

Have the working class in modern Britain become objects of fear, scorn and ridicule? That's the claim of Owen Jones who joins Laurie and Imogen Tyler on today's Thinking Allowed. He claims that the media and politicians alike dismiss as feckless, criminal and ignorant a vast, underprivileged section of society whose members have become stereotyped by one, disgust-filled word - 'chavs'. If this is true, then how has the reality of the working-class majority become regularly served up as a feral rump for our contempt and amusement? Also, what happens to Goths when they get old? Laurie talks to Paul Hodkinson about his study of members of that youth cult which used to be called Gothic Punk.
