Chris Appleton is the founder and CEO of Art Pharmacy, a pioneering initiative using social prescribing to integrate the arts into healthcare and improve mental well-being. A leader in arts and social impact, his work has been featured in The New York Times, CNN, and NPR. With a background in nonprofit leadership Chris is redefining healing one creative prescription at a time. This episode: What if a doctor's prescription didn't lead you to a pharmacy, but to a painting class, a dance performance, or a music workshop? For centuries, artists have played a vital role in well-being, and cultures around the world have embraced the arts as a source of health, community, and renewal. Now, social prescribing is reshaping healthcare by integrating the arts, not just as enrichment but as a science-backed tool for improving both mental and physical health. Decades of research show that engaging in the arts can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, strengthen the immune system, and improve cognitive function. As the founder and CEO of Art Pharmacy, Chris Appleton is proving that creative engagement is more than a feel-good activity. It is a legitimate, measurable intervention that enhances health outcomes. By working with healthcare providers and insurers, he is building a system where doctors can prescribe the arts just like they would medication or therapy. Grant and Chris also explore how programs like Prebys Foundation's Healing Through Arts and Nature initiative are improving community health through greater access to arts, culture, and nature. Grant shares how his own experience stepping onto the dance floor at a recent grantee event led to an unexpected moment of joy, connection, and uplifted spirits that reinforced the power of the arts in fostering well-being.

In this episode of the HSE Talking Health & Wellbeing Podcast, host Noreen Turley explores the concept of social prescribing with Dr. Sean Owens, a GP and chair of the Climate Health Alliance of Ireland, and Dr. Aleisha Clarke, the HSE National Program Manager for Mental Health and Wellbeing. They explain how social prescribing aims to connect individuals with local community resources to meet their social, emotional, and practical needs and discuss that sometimes it's not just about medical solutions; it's about holistic care that considers the whole person moving beyond traditional medical solutions to a more holistic approach to healthcare. Sean acknowledges that integrating social prescribing into primary care requires a cultural shift among healthcare providers. He demonstrates how social prescribing has been successfully integrated into his practice, where link workers have become an essential part of the healthcare team. Aleisha explains that the evidence shows that social prescribing can have a range of positive outcomes, including improvements in mental wellbeing, physical health and health behaviours, and reductions in social isolation and loneliness. Aleisha outlines the referral process, noting that individuals over 18 can be referred by a GP, health care professional or individuals can also self-refer. Once referred, they work with a link worker to co-develop a personalised health and wellbeing plan tailored to their specific needs and circumstances. This individualised support is crucial, as link workers take the time to understand each person's unique needs. Listeners are encouraged to visit the All-Ireland Social Prescribing website https://www.allirelandsocialprescribing.ie/ to connect with local link workers and start their journey toward accessing community supports. Hamad's journey is nothing short of inspiring. Starting with a Bachelor's in Neuroscience, his path took a transformative turn when he volunteered with early-stage dementia patients. Here, he realised the traditional biomedical approach often falls short of addressing patients' holistic needs. This experience sparked his passion for social prescribing—a healthcare approach focusing on what truly matters to patients beyond their medical symptoms. In this episode of Brand New Dr., Hamad shares how he is at the forefront of an exciting movement reimagining healthcare by addressing the symptoms and the root social and economic factors that impact patient health. We explore the essence of social prescribing, exploring how it goes far beyond linking patients to community resources. Hamad explains how this approach shifts the focus from "What's the matter with you?" to "What matters to you?"—a powerful reorientation emphasising the patient's voice and needs in their care journey. He also tackles the paradox of modern medicine, where despite advancements in treatment, healthcare systems are struggling to keep pace with rising demand, and adverse drug reactions are contributing to an alarming rate of hospitalisations.Hamad debunks common myths about social prescribing, stressing that it's not about prescribing cycling or other one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, it's about understanding and addressing the complex socio-political factors that affect health. He passionately argues for the need to empower patients today while acknowledging the systemic issues that must be addressed for long-term change.Connect with Rolake Ojo:LinkedInInstagramWebsiteCheck out &MATTER:LinkedInInstagramConnect with Hamaad KhanLinkedInBrand New Dr. is produced and managed by Urban Podcasts.

What would you think if your doctor wrote you a prescription to take a walk outside? To visit an art museum? To take a yoga class? It may sound unconventional, but the practice of prescribing nonmedical interventions to improve health, known as social prescribing, is becoming more and more commonplace. This week, we're chatting with Julia Hotz, author of The Connection Cure: The Prescriptive Power of Movement, Nature, Art, Service, and Belonging. With Julia as our guide, we'll explore the profound relationship between environment and wellness, the amazing health outcomes of social prescriptions, and the healthcare professionals at the forefront of this growing movement. In a busy world, where so many of our ailments are lifestyle based, social prescribing helps connect us back to the things that make us human. Show NotesThe Connection Cure: he Prescriptive Power of Movement, Nature, Art, Service, and Belonging by Julia HotzSocial Prescribing WebsiteYou're Not Sick – Your Environment Is (Slate)The Connection Cure explores social prescriptions to improve mental health (NPR)Key Words: healthcare, public health, preventative medicine, nature, biophilia, biophilic design, culture, art, wellness, social prescribing, loneliness, health, lifestyle, mental health Biophilic Solutions is available wherever you get podcasts. In this episode, we will learn from Ivory Rose, OTD, OTR/L Dr. Ivory Rose is an occupational therapist and a poet who promotes Social Prescribing. She holds a master's in occupational therapy from NYU and a post-professional doctorate in occupational therapy from Boston University. Her passion for “prescribed volunteerism” led her to the field of social prescribing. She has volunteered in various capacities for Social Prescribing USA and enjoys raising awareness amongst occupational therapists about the “hot topic” of social prescribing. Some of her favorite occupations include writing, spoken word poetry, walking in nature, and horseback riding. Ivory has been writing since she was 7 years old and credits the development of her imagination as a writer to her greatest childhood complaint: growing up in rural Van Zandt, Washington without a television. Eager to experience the world outside of her hometown, Ivory has lived in Atlanta, New York City, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic before settling in the greater Los Angeles area.Contact & Resources:My substack newsletter: https://otsocialprescribing.substack.com/Email address: ivoryhazelrose@gmail.comMy website: www.ivoryhazelrose.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@ivoryhazelrose To view my poster from the International Social Prescribing Conference: https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F0d1d2400-aa51-4d86-992a-b25e1a339b24_4494x3179.png?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=emailTo purchase the book The Connection Cure by Julia Hotz (mentioned above): https://www.socialprescribing.co/connection-cureIf you are interested in supporting the roll out of social prescribing in the U.S., join the community of practice at Social Prescribing USA at https://socialprescribingusa.com/ (Click on “Join the Movement”).As always, I welcome any feedback & ideas from all of you or if you are interested in being a guest on future episodes, please do not hesitate to contact Patricia Motus at transitionsot@gmail.com or DM via Instagram @transitionsotTHANK YOU for LISTENING, FOLLOWING, DOWNLOADING, RATING, REVIEWING & SHARING “The Uncommon OT Series” Podcast with all your OTP friends and colleagues!Full Episodes and Q & A only available at:https://www.wholistic-transitions.com/the-uncommon-ot-seriesSign Up NOW for the Transitions OT Email List to Receive the FREE Updated List of Uncommon OT Practice Settingshttps://www.wholistic-transitions.com/transitionsotFor Non-Traditional OT Practice Mentorship w/ Patricia:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeC3vI5OnK3mLrCXACEex-5ReO8uUVPo1EUXIi8FKO-FCfoEg/viewformBIG THANKS to our sponsors Picmonic & TruelearnUSE DISCOUNT CODE “TransitionsOT” to Score 20% OFF Your Membership Today!Happy Listening Friends!Big OT Love! All views are mine and guests own.

Last year's declaration by the U.S Surgeon General that loneliness and isolation are a public health crisis was based on research showing that they have a negative impact on mental health, blood pressure, cognitive performance and, most relevant to our discussion today on Raise the Line, immune system function. That's why it's important for people dealing with chronic illnesses to stay socially connected at whatever level they are capable of, says our guest Dr. Rose Perry, a neuroscientist and executive director of an applied research non-profit called Social Creatures. “When your symptoms aren't good, being isolated can be like throwing gasoline on the fire. I don't think lack of social connection is a cause of chronic illness, it's really about setting conditions that make healing maximally possible,” she says. At Social Creatures, Dr. Perry and her team create programs designed to help populations at risk for social isolation feel like they are connected and supported.  As she explains to host Raven Baxter of the Cohen Center for Recovery from Complex Chronic Illnesses at Mount Sinai, providers should be aware of programs like hers and affinity groups (e.g. knitting clubs) in their locality and engage in “social prescribing” as part of a treatment plan. “A lot of doctors will develop a resource list so they can pull it up and then kind of matchmake their patient with an organization.” Don't miss this final episode in our special series on Post-Acute Infection Syndromes where you'll hear about practical strategies providers can use to help address an often overlooked factor in someone's ability to be as healthy as possible. Mentioned in this episode:Mount Sinai Health System Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation

This week's guest, Jessica Bockler is one of those people who sparks every fire in my being - and i hope in yours, too.  Jessica is an applied theatre practitioner and transpersonal psychologist who co-founded the Alef Trust a globally-conscious non-profit organisation offering online graduate education programmes, and open learning courses for people who want really to step into what Indy Johar so beautifully calls the emergent edge of Inter-Becoming. Jessica is integral to the Nurturing the Fields of Change Programme that brings people together from diverse walks of life to create an emerging community of practice around change - and she's Programme Director for the Trust's academic programmes in Consciousness, Spirituality and Transpersonal Psychology. She teaches on a range of topics, bringing spiritual perspectives to activism and social change - so you can begin to see why I find her work so enthralling. She stands at that nexus where transpersonal psychology meets shamanic practice, where being and becoming are an art and a practice in themselves, grounded in modern science - not the reductive, Head Mind science of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but twenty-first century science where complexity and systems thinking lie at the heart of all we do, where we recognise that only by becoming fully present in the moment, can we access the whole, vast intelligence of the All That Is and find what is ours to do. Jessica brings all this into being in social prescribing programmes, in theatre, in change facilitation, in the MSc at Liverpool John Moores University and in her daily life and she shares it in the conversation you're about to hear - including a clip of one of her own practices, that is solid podcasting gold.  If you're interested in finding out how we can access our own inner intelligence and build with others to co-create the foundations of that more flourishing future we'd be proud to leave behind, then this is the podcast for you.  ALEF Trust  https://aleftrust.org Nurturing the Fields of Change https://www.aleftrust.org/alef-applied/nurturing-the-fields-of-change-programme/MSc in Consciousness, Spirituality and Transpersonal Psychology https://www.aleftrust.org/academic-learning/masters-degree/Live Event: Healing Humanity, 1st June 2024, Broughton Sanctuary, Yorkshire eventbrite.co.uk/e/healing-humanity-imagination-embodiment-and-community-tickets-887551710057 Workshop: Embodied Imagination for Social Change, 2nd & 3rd September, Oxford eurotas2024.com/pre-post-conference-workshops/towards-emergence-embodied-play-and-sourcing-for-transformation Conference, 4 – 8 Sept, Oxford: Creative Bridges: embodied consciousness, psyche & soul in research and practice eurotas2024.comNational Academy for Social Prescribing https://socialprescribingacademy.org.uk/Inner Green Deal  https://innergreendeal.com/

This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast presents an interview with the senior director of the NYC Health + Hospitals Arts in Medicine program, Larissa Trinder. Larissa is one of the talented people behind the project that inspired the new book Healing Walls: New York City Health + Hospitals Community Mural Project (2019 - 2021) which commemorates a brilliant and benevolent three-year Community Mural Project that persists as a flagship of the NYC Health + Hospitals Arts in Medicine Program. Supported by the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, the Community Mural Project is designed to encourage creativity, lower stress, build trust, and to increase engagement between hospital staff and members of their surrounding communities. The murals also create space for joy as well as healing for patients and frontline medical workers who are always under enormous pressure and were hit especially hard during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Community Mural Project builds upon a mural tradition that began in the 1930s when the Works Progress Administration (WPA) supported the creation of murals in virtually every New York public hospital. Healing Walls — a beautiful coffee table book that was gifted to every H+H staff member who participated — vividly documents the ongoing community project as well as many WPA-era hospital murals with new scholarship and images. What's best is — 100% of all sales of the book will benefit NYC Health + Hospitals Arts in Medicine programs. In this episode host Michael Shields and Larissa Trinder (and all too briefly editor and author Jan Rothschild) dig into exactly how the Community Mural Project initially came to life while exploring how the gifted artists who are participating in the project were selected. They discuss the cathartic power of art and how decades of research prove that the arts can play a role in “healing the healers” as well as improving patient outcomes and forging community health awareness and partnerships. They talk about the painting parties that occurred when the murals were first erected and the collaborative process that goes into creating each mural that ensures they are strong representations of their respective communities. They talk about the HHArt empathy workshops, a fascinating and important idea known as “Social Prescribing,” and so much more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
