In this week's episode we're doing a deep dive into something amateur dancers (and even some professionals) often neglect as they get ready for competition and that is mental preparation. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not minimizing the importance of doing rounds or rehearsing your routines and drilling technique. We all know muscle memory is vital to not only success, but fun on the dance floor! But let's face it, your brain runs the show and no amount of physical preparation is going to make up or a poor mindset. In order to be the best you can be on game day, you've got to incorporate strategies that prepare your brain as well as your body into your pre-competition routine. It can't be emphasized enough... the key to preventing run-of-the-mill pre-competition jitters from turning into full-blown anxiety is what goes on between your ears and that's why I'm sharing some easy mental prep tools for you to incorporate into your pre-competition routine. Grab a pen and a pad of paper because trust me, you're going to want to take notes! To some, they're Maks and Val from Dancing With The Stars; to Nikki & Brie, they're friends. This week, The Chmerkovskiy Brothers and The Garcia Twins sit down to talk about new adventures, growing up in the dance world, life away from DWTS, priorities as parents, the hustle, their current wine-tasting and dance project in Napa, Savor After Hours and you'll get to see Nikki & Brie on stage with them over Labor Day weekend. Maks and Val have an eight-year age difference; however, they have a lot of shared experiences growing up in Brooklyn, the hard work to succeed on the dance floor and their successes in ballroom dancing away from the cameras of Dancing With The Stars, what career paths they envision for their children, how their house was the social center of their friend groups and the longevity of performing on the dance floor as they move into new chapters of their careers. Maks shares that one of his favorite moments performing is when his wife, Peta, surprised him with their son, Shai, on stage at Radio City Music Hall for a special moment on stage. Nikki is certain that she'd prefer Matteo to choose dance over wrestling but wants him to see her in the ring one last time before she officially retires, something that Birdie was able to experience with Brie. Then Maks and Val play a friendly game of Most Likely as Nikki & Brie discover more similarities and differences between themselves and the Chmerkovskiy Brothers when it comes to sleep habits, paying for meals, collecting shoes, and being dramatic. To close out the episode, Maks and Val share their Inspiration & Affirmations as they each share different nuggets of wisdom that have helped them not just in their careers but in life as well. Linda Evans is a strength-based career coach, speaker, and writer who specializes in personal branding. She earned a BA in American Studies and a minor in Ballroom Dance from Brigham Young University and an MA in Psychology Counseling from Columbia University. Linda resides in San Antonio, Texas. She started her virtual career coaching business, Launched by Linda, in 2011 and has worked in higher education for ten years in five universities. She is a Gallup certified Strength Coach and has certificates in Positive Psychology and Public Speaking. Linda started her career trajectory by volunteering and having part-time jobs mentoring other students in college. She then went on to pursue a master's program in counseling, which she dropped out of after two semesters. Linda then worked as an administrative executive assistant while earning her master's degree. Afterward, she got a full-time job as a career counselor at Columbia University and then tried academic advising but ultimately went back to career services. Along the way, Linda also had a side hustle where she started editing resumes of friends and family and then built it up to offering services such as personal branding, changing careers, practice for interviews, LinkedIn branding, and cover letters. Linda has also started doing podcast interviews, public speaking, webinars, panels, and writing articles for an international business online magazine. Linda's current goal is to take a break from her full-time career to look after her baby girl and eventually go back to get her PhD and become a professor. This conversation involved two people discussing the value of career coaches and how they can help people coming out of college. The speaker noted how college doesn't always teach students real world skills like how to navigate the corporate world, ask for promotions, or create a resume. They both agreed that having people like the other speaker, who has the experience and the perspective, is an amazing addition to college courses. The speaker mentioned that even though she has taken on the full time job of being a stay at home mom, she still plans to continue her side-hustle and grow professionally online and with clients. She also talked about how she is naturally a good listener and that she knew she wanted to be a career coach. In this conversation, the speaker talks about how to craft a successful personal mission statement. The speaker recommends doing a self-inventory of interests, strengths, personality traits, values, and goals in order to come up with a list of words that describe oneself. These words can then be used to create a one-sentence mission statement which should be short enough to be memorized. The mission statement should be something that is both aspirational and reflective of who one is currently, and feedback from people who know the individual well should be sought to ensure the mission statement matches who they are. Lastly, the mission statement should be a source of motivation and inspiration and be able to bring out joy and energy when needed. The conversation discussed the importance of writing a mission statement that goes beyond just one's job. It should be something that applies to all parts of life, such as whether one is employed, unemployed, volunteering, or retired. This mission statement can be very helpful in decision-making and gives a person a sense of direction in life. The conversation also touched on the difference between job, occupation, career, and calling. A job is a specific place with a specific job title, while an occupation is the category of jobs, such as nursing. A career is an extended amount of time, including education, experience, awards, and skills. A calling is how a person views what they are doing and is often related to religion. An example was given of three workers laying bricks on a religious temple and how each of them viewed the work differently.Connect...

I come to you today solo. It's been a while since I turned the mic on myself. I found myself reflecting on the choices that we make and being present to those choices during my last Ballroom dance competition. I feel privileged and blessed to be able to participate in dance as I do. And yet if you have listened to me before or followed me on social , this dance is truly a metaphor for life. I learn so much about myself and how I show up in the world when I challenge myself with dance. I speak today about comparison and how that is the thief for all joy. Signs from the universe as I hear a song that reminds me of my mother. And so much more. Where do you find yourself today? What choices are you making? Are you truly appreciating them ? In this episode, we talk to Harriet Waghorn and Kamala Devam about their experience working across different genres of dance. As dancers we often train in streams of dance genres – often there are expected routes mapped out for us and aesthetics we are expected to achieve. It's therefore refreshing to find artists whose work transcends those divides, fuses aspects of styles together to make new aesthetics, new vocabulary. What does that mean in terms of training for themselves, as well as making work, working with dancers who may not have the same experiences? We begin by asking our guests how they came to find dance – both Kamala and Harriet mention their mothers and how they facilitated their first steps on their journeys. We discuss their training and how they came to build their experience across the genres of contemporary, ballroom, Bharatanatyam, acrobatics and contact improvisation. We ask our guests why are they drawn to the styles in which they work, and how stepping away from the usual framing of genres and fusing other styles relates to their audiences. we find similarities that may not be obvious such as the constant flow and trust that is needed in both contact improvisation as well as ballroom – and how important the connection with your partner is. We move on to discuss their own teaching practices and what they are looking for in dancers when they choreograph work. The importance of training is a huge part of any dancer and artists life and we discuss how they train across such different genres of dance. Finally, we are intrigued to hear what's next for our two artists on their journey working across genres. Julie and Casey sit down with speaker, author, and creativity expert Natalie Nixon, founder of Figure 8 Thinking, to discuss how everyone can find more creativity, how the workplace should be redefining productivity, and lessons from a life lived all over the world. Along the way, we learn about intuition, the gifts of being “in the margins”, and why leaders should consider learning the tango. Thank you to our Season 3 sponsor, Armoire! TOP TAKEAWAYS: Noticing what she heard over and over again from the leaders and business folks she was talking to (“it's like jazz” and “something told me to…” being two examples) and following her own curiosity led Natalie down her primary research paths: chaordic systems, intuitive leadership, and creativity. Natalie explains creativity as “wonder + rigor”. Wonder is the necessary time/energy for reflection, play, experimentation, rest, etc., and rigor is the necessary time/energy for grit, practice, discipline, and gaining expertise. What if we had new metrics for productivity? Natalie coined the term “invisible work” to put a label on the ideation, ruminating, reframing of problems, reflection, etc that goes into the VISIBLE results in the business world. This stuff is absolutely necessary but difficult to quantify — the old metrics of “widgets created/time on task” don't work in our new era of work. Mini Lesson: The challenges—and gifts—of being a “clumsy student” Natalie Nixon, PhD is a creativity strategist, global keynote speaker and author. As president of Figure 8 Thinking, LLC she advises leaders on transformation—by applying wonder and rigor to amplify growth and business value. Natalie is one of Real Leaders' "Top 50 Keynote Speakers in the World for 2022" She is the author of the award-winning The Creativity Leap: Unleash Curiosity, Improvisation and Intuition at Work—an honoree in the creativity category of Fast Company's 2021 World Changing Ideas Awards. Her firm Figure 8 Thinking, was named among the top 20 women-led innovation firms by Core 77 in 2021. In this episode, Cherelle talks about how she made the decision to “burn her ship”, quit her full time job, and pursue her passion of sharing her Trinidadian roots through her Caribbean focused dance and fitness company SocaFit. She talks about how imposter syndrome crept in and kept her community smaller. However, once the pandemic hit, she was forced to either go online or close, so she got over her fears and is now serving people internationally. Cherelle is a proud Canadian born with deep Trinidadian roots that extend farther than you or I can imagine. Little did she know that important events throughout her upbringing would subconsciously shape her into the professional entertainer and entrepreneur she is today. You could say her journey started at a very young age - playing Mas during Cariwest as a baby and growing up playing the steel drums in her father's band, Trincan Steel Orchestra, for over 10 years. Fast forward to today, now owning her own Caribbean-focused dance and fitness company, SocaFit. Cherelle created SocaFit to allow her to celebrate and share her Trinidadian culture through dance and fitness and to also create programs to enable youth to explore and learn about their own history. What started as her teaching her mother's friends in a small room has grown to an international audience for both adults and children.Find SocaFit classes hereFollow Cherelle on IGFollow Candace on Instagram

'If you don't design your own life plan, chances are you'll fall into someone else's plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much. (Jim Rohn) 'I had to figure out a way to turn on my heart and mind, connect them together with my body, and once I did that, everything started going up from there' (Michael Johnson) As a professional ballroom dance competitor, Michael Johnson had natural talent and a great work ethic but he found himself searching for something more, the 'it' factor that would take him to the top. Mercedes (Didi) von Deck, MD is devoted to helping people reach their full potential. She has spent much of her life studying the human body from different viewpoints through her career as an orthopaedic surgeon as well as as a dancer, yoga teacher and Feldenkrais practitioner. Movement has always interested her, and she uses her knowledge and skills to help people of all ages and backgrounds function and feel better. Her love of movement and dance contributed to her decision to become an orthopaedic surgeon. She found orthopaedics to be a satisfying way to help people recover from injuries and regain lost function. However, in some cases, surgery, medications and standard exercise didn't seem to be enough to relieve pain.Early in her medical practice, Didi realized that a patient's attitude and resiliency is important to the success of medical treatment or surgery. Sometimes patients need to learn they can go beyond self-imposed limitations. Sometimes patients have developed habits of tightening muscles to help decrease the pain of an injury and they are unable to let go of these habits after they have healed. Didi finds that yoga and the Feldenkrais Method can help. These practices create a concrete experience of how to change muscular patterns that are hindering function. And when the body changes, the mind follows to enable people to find their optimal health and become their optimum selves. Using the Feldenkrais Method and/or yoga, Didi can help people feel better in their bodies, help people recovering from injuries or living with disabilities, help relieve chronic pain and anxiety, and enhance performance in athletics, yoga, art, music and dance.Didi can be contacted at connectingbodyandmind@gmail.com. She lives in Newton, MA with her husband, cat, and two bunnies. She is the proud mom of three creative and capable daughters who are passionate about what they believe in. Didi hopes she has been successful instilling in them the belief that anything and everything is possible if you follow your heart.Episode Notes:Didi's pull toward exploring movement through modern dance and switching between competitive ballroom dance and school during her med school yearsHow a burgeoning love of dance and movement led Didi to a career in orthopedic surgeryFinding Ashtanga yoga after her 3rd child and feeling an instant connection to the practiceThe shift away from needing a guru in modern yoga culture and seeing ourselves as our own best teacherThe incredible healing power of Feldenkrais and “somatic re-education” Didi leads us through a 7 minute Feldenkrais exercise (at around the 32 minute mark)https://www.downunderyoga.com/boston-yoga-teacher/didi-von-deck
