Byrd, Tom, Kevin and Lux pair up two independent horror films made in Japan by American filmmakers, with a mix of American and Japanese cast and crew.  First up we have the Manster, an early body horror film directed by Kenneth G Crane (the American version of Half Human) and starring Peter Dynely (Thunderbirds), Terri Zimmern Jerry Ito (Mothra), and Tetsu Nakamura (Mothra, Latitude Zero).  It is about an American journalist in Japan who becomes the subject of an evolution experiment that causes a monstrous creature to grow out of his shoulder and commit murders across Tokyo.  Then we have the Revenge of Dr. X (actually titled Venus Flytrap), a film written by Ed Wood (yes, that Ed Wood) and shot in Japan by bored military personnel stationed there (we get into that insane story).  It tells the story of a cantankerous NASA scientist who goes to Japan to "relax" and (for reasons left unclear) starts splicing plant DNA to create a violent plant-man.  There's unhinged gas station attendants, pearl divers, mute hunchbacks and more.  How do these compare to other b-movies of the times?  Why did some guys in the military decide to buy an Ed Wood script and shoot it in Japan?  Why is SO MUCH of the information out there about Dr. X false?  Which of these movies nearly drove us to madness? We have the answers, so relax and enjoy the conversation!

Toho's "A" Team. Check. Two bonafide stars of film and television. Check. Trampolines. Super check. On paper, everything looks (blood) rock solid for 1969's US-Japan co-production of LATITUDE ZERO - but, it was definitely a paper tiger (errr...gryphon?)...because it was one of the studio's biggest flops. Our YHS on Monster Island hosts, "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key, share their thoughts on this unique entry from Toho's cinematic roster - and why it may not be remembered in the same manner as other tokusatsu films. Everything from Joseph Cotten's multiple costume changes to "The Joker" and his "Batmen" to the (in)famous gryphon kaiju that is, well, it's something - nothing is off limits for our duo of daikiaju devotees. But wait! That's not all! The tandem also discusses a ton of toy news from Mondo and Max Toy Co. (among others), their own weekly pick-ups which include some great Godzilland finds and Jay's return to X-Plus, and Jake's recent viewing of The Black Demon (2023). It's always a fun trip to YHS on Monster Island - your home for kaiju films, fandom, television, and toys!

“The Girl Boss in the sausagefest” Pitface and Tantz chat are here to chat with me about the subject or lady Barbarians: What they look like, where they originated, why they originated, what they mean, and the logic behind them. They're often overshadowed by their male counterparts (e.g. Conan), and often dismissed as simply an erotic male fantasy, but they've been around just as long and they've also had just as much of a role to play in the traditional “barbarian” mythos as the male versions. Sure, the sexy versions are abundant, iconic, and visually striking, but they're not the be all and end all! This Quackcast was inspired by the topic of my 8th Fashion Spotlight and its focus on the barbarian woman Rose Red, I go into a lot of detail there and it's linked bellow if you're interested. for a little bit of a recap: lady barbarians go back at least as far as the Roman empire, even older possibly. In Rome they took the form of “gladiatrixes” (female gladiators), who were dressed as and promoted as barbarian fighters from exotic, uncivilised lands (Africa, all over Europe etc), as a way to excite the interest of the paying public to pay to see the fights, the same as we'd do today with wrestling and MMA. Many influences were behind this: the myth of the Amazons, the myth of Atalanta, red haired Celtic queen Boadicea, even early ideas for what was behind the myth of Medusa - she was thought to be based on the queen of a barbarian tribe rather than Ovid's much later idea that she was a virgin temple priestess. But of course most of us know female barbarians because of their modern incarnations. They've always been around in the history of art but they had a spike in popularity with the Italian “Sword and Sandal” movies of the 1960s, then the art of fantasy art master Frank Frazetta in the 1970s. They found their way into things like Dungeons and Dragons and with the success of Conan the Barbarian and the Robert E Howard inspired Valeria in that film a whole host of lady barbarians got their own films, often exploitative and sexy. The most famous lady barbarian of the time was Red Sonja, loosely based on another Robert E Howard character called Red Sonya, but turned from an armoured fighter against the Ottoman Turks into a scale-mail bikini wearing comic book barbarian woman from prehistory. The most famous lady barbarian to come after her was Xena, the warrior princess, played by statuesque New Zealand sketch comedian Lucy Lawless. Xena was simply a female spinoff from Hercules The Legendary journeys. The really cool thing about her is that not only did she achieve extreme popularity and her show totally eclipsed its originator, she was also an original character AND she got that popularity without leveraging the sexiness of the premise or character! Some notable lady barbarians I can think off… Virginia Hey's Warrior Woman, Tina Turner's character, and Furiosa from the Mad Max 2, 3, and 4 respectively; Lady Death; Red Sonja; Grace Jone's character from Conan the Destroyer; Valeria (Sandal Bergman) from Conan the Barbarian; Queen Boadicea; Xena; Betty Paige's Cheetah woman (her look was probably an inspiration for Xena in some ways); Ygritte from Game of Thrones; Atalanta; Princess Merida of Brave; I even created my own version in a Barbarian Pinky TA! Who are your faves from the this genre? This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Creeping through the desert ruins, not wearing overly much, heat hits like a wall, golden sun dazels and mystifies. From plucked strings to creepy atmospherics, the sound bursts in a bombastic wave of high energy multilayered noise and exotic sounds, with pounding percussion. Hello, kaiju lovers! This week's episode is a “traditional” mini-analysis of Latitude Zero, an almost obscure 1969 Toho science fiction film directed by Ishiro Honda, who probably had to take a dip in the “Bath of Immunity” to endure the stress of making it. To say it was harrowing would be an understatement. This strange American/Japanese co-production has a troubled history full of clashing sensibilities and creative differences (which you can hear more about in MIFV episode six). However, the main topic of the episode is the concept of utopia because Latitude Zero seems to be a rare example in fiction of a successful one. Spoiler warning: Nathan doesn't buy it. Afterward, Nathan and Jimmy are visited by the Monster Island Board of Directors' executive assistant, Ms. Perkins, who is the Island's head of PR. She wanted to discuss recent “fake news” being spread by Jimmy From NASA and also announce the Board's decision on Nathan's proposals for season two of MIFV. All this plus listener feedback! This episode features Celeste Mora as Ms. Perkins (Twitter: @VOCelesteMora). The song heard in the episode is “Opening the Way” by Pablo Coma, which is a remix from the video game Shadow of the Colossus. It is from the OCRemix album, BadAss Boss Themes: Volume III. The episode thumbnail was created by Michael Hamilton. We'd like to give a shout-out to our Patreon patrons Travis Alexander and Michael Hamilton (co-hosts of Kaiju Weekly); Danny DiManna (author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project); Eli Harris (elizilla13); Chris Cooke (host of One Cross Radio), and Bex from Redeemed Otaku! Back to Japan for this episode! We look at two movies from the father of Godzilla, Mr. Ishiro Honda, starting off with 1963's Atragon which tells a complicated story of toxic masculinity and intrigue. Featuring a miraculous flying sub that is sent to defend the earth from a lost undersea kingdom that has it's eyes set on conquering the world! It is delightfully cheesy and full of signature Tsuburaya effects. We follow that up with 1969's Latitude Zero, which raises the bar in every conceivable direction...this movie is INSANE in the very best ways. We have hidden societies, miraculous machines, incredible cross-breeding surgeries, lasers, and some impossibly skimpy outfits...oh, and also jet belts!!!  This is pure, nutty, gold! This week, Aaron hijacked a submarine so that we could build a utopian society with the sole purpose of worshiping Toho films! Or we watched Latitude Zero from 1969, I forget. In this under sea adventure, 2 scientists and a nerd get rescued (kidnapped?) and taken to a magical land under the sea, where everyone gets along and there are no animal-human hybrids at all! Nope, those are only outside of the secret bubble, crafted by the skilled hands of the evil Dr. Malic (Cesar Romero). Will our heroes ever return home? Do they even want to? What's with all the trampolines? These questions and more are not answered on this new episode!Email: pleasedontpodcast@gmail.com Facebook: facebook.com/pdsmiosTwitter: @outerspacepodko-fi: ko-fi.com/pdsmioswww.eartrumpetaudio.com
