Happy Year of the Dragon, which in Mandarin is 'long' so it's going to be a looong year as a Chinese friend pointed out to me this week.In this episode, I (briefly) talk about my grandfather's time in Hong Kong as child, and the First Chinese Man in Britain (longer ago than I thought). I talk about the Opium Wars, drawing on two books I recommended previously and that I have reviewed on my Youtube channel, 'The Rise and Fall of the British Empire' by Lawrence James and 'Empire: How Britain Made the Modern World' by Niall Furgusson. I also recommend the Youtube channel 'Electric Shadows Cinema'. I also, also talk about the handover of Hong Kong from Britain to China in 1997, and how those events eventually made it into a 007 film. Talking of James Bond, I also talk about three British-Chinese alumni of the long-running film franchise, plus our first Chinese members of the House of Lords and House of Commons. If you're wondering about the music at the top and tail of the episode, I recorded the street sounds on my way to work in Shenzhen one day.If you have an idea for the Alphabet of Britishness, please do not hesitate to message me. The British Empire is scarcely taught in schools in modern Britain, yet many of us Brits have personal connections to it. Learning about our individual heritage can connect us to a wider national and global story. Here, I talk about my own interest, my travels to places once ruled by the UK, and the five books that helped inform me on the reality of Empire. I give the recommendations from around the ten-minute mark, with readings and reviews. Each have their own strengths, and weaknesses. If you read any one them, I hope you find it informative and enjoyable. Two men, working separately but simultaneously, are each cited as the originator of the idea of the metric system depending on what source you read. Thank you very much to the chaps in the Facebook Group, 'The Gentlemen's Society for the Appreciation of the British Empire' who provided so many great insights into the REAL Battle of Rorke's Drift, portrayed in the 1964 movie. There were over 300 comments, and I draw from as many as I am able to, as well as the following books:'Rorke's Drift' by Adrian Greaves'The Rise and Fall of the British Empire' by Lawrence James'Pax Britannica' by James/Jan Morrisand also a special shout-out to two authors who reached out to me:Neil Thornton (Rorke's Drift: A New Perspective) Kevin Brazier (Victoria Crosses of the Zulu and Boer Wars) Both informed this podcast. I asked on my Instagram (@FlemingNeverDies) whether you've seen the movie 'Zulu' and 37% of people said 'no'. So, I don't delve too deep into the movie, you can listen to this then watch the film happily for the first time, or vice versa. Either way, I hope you enjoy it as much as I, and many others, do. This week we're discussing Part 5 from the Rise and Fall of the British Empire by Lawrence James. Parts 5 bring us from the Second World War to the anti-climactic end of the British Empire. Lawrence gives much focus to how the empire's colonial subjects responded to the call for support from Britain during its fight against Hitler - whole hearted support with an implicit understanding that independence would soon follow. The Suez Crisis of 1956, in which British and French forces attempted to reclaim the Suez Canal from the Egyptian President Nasser, turned out to be the last hurrah of “great” British imperialism. Slowly and then quickly the British Empire began to dissolve, from Canada to India to South Africa - with the final major decolonisation taking place in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbawbwe) in 1979. Lawrence mulls over the legacy of the British Empire, was it the spread of civilization, the spread of barbarism, or as with most things, a lot a bit of both? From the back of the book: “Lawrence James studied history and English at York University and subsequently took a research degree at Merton College, Oxford. Following a career as a teacher, he became a full-time writer in 1985. He is the author of seven critically acclaimed works of nonfiction. He lives in St. Andrews, Scotland, with his wife, who is the headmistress of St. Leonard's School, and his two sons.”
This week we're discussing Parts 3 and 4 from the Rise and Fall of the British Empire by Lawrence James. Parts 3 and 4 take us from the emerging dominance of British imperialism after the defeat of Napoleon in 1815 to its inevitable sunset at the end of World War II. The extent of the British Empire and its importance, for good or ill, is truly felt in James' account. From the imperial cooperation of the two world wars to the postage stamps decorated with oddities at the far reaches of the Empire, James impresses upon us how the changing attitudes of all people inside the Empire understood the project - as a contradictory patchwork of progress, domination, prestige, and paternalism. Furthermore, James exposes the reader to the British Empire as a political entity, a living organism of indirect and directly ruled states and dominions full of a diverse range of peoples with political aspirations within and outside of the Empire, rather than simply an inflexible iron fist (although there was plenty of that).
This week we're discussing Part 1 and 2 from the Rise and Fall of the British Empire by Lawrence James. James takes a sober approach to the early phases of the British Empire, avoiding condemnation or affirmation of the project itself while detailing both the Empire's triumphs and it's horrors. The first two sections lay the groundwork for the rest of this history and treats the British Empire as a heavily coupled phenomena with the international scramble for colonies - first against the Spanish and then against the French. James treats each of the major regions of early British conquest - the Americas, India, and Australia with a light touch and gives us insight into the reasons for British ascendency, it's naval and financial superiority, as well as how the emerging Empire affected British society - the solidifying of British nationalism, a newfound respect for the soldier profession, and the desire to spread this Empire of Liberty. Leonard's School, and his two sons.” Next week we'll be reading Part 3 of The Rise and Fall of the British Empire by Lawrence James

Lawrence James is interviewed by Torey McNeil at the Central Library on January 26th, 2017.
Omowale Adewale, born Lawrence James was born in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY. During his trip to Lagos, Nigeria in 2005 he was given the name by his friend and organizer Moyosore Akojenu. Moyosore passed in 2007. Omowale Adewale means the son has come home; the crown has returned. Omowale was a teen amateur bodybuilder finalist and two-time collegiate gold medalist at 18. He has competed at boxing, martial arts and mixed martial arts matches and tournaments. He won an amateur boxing belt in his mid-30's.Since the age of seven, Omowale was attracted to political change. Omowale had managed to work every level of local or State electoral campaign including campaign manager with an above average success rate without ever graduating from college. He worked in the NYS Assembly for six years. In 2001, after a year of fostering his vision of an artist union, recognizing the mistreatment of artists, Omowale spearheaded the Grassroots Artists MovEment (G.A.ME) with other organizers and artists. The fledgling organization received significant recognition in the organizing world and music industry, particularly, Hip-Hop. G.A.ME accomplished providing health care to artists for a short time and helped artists understand the politics of the music industry. Their change in adopting projects to help young people of color redefine themselves still blossom today. In 2004, Omowale's first published work was featured in Socialism & Democracy's 36th issue "Hip-Hop, Race and Cultural Politics." Last year, Omowale sought to help any and everyone become vegan through a host of media and communications with the #GoVeg2014 campaign. He resides in the city of New York with his wife and kids as a small urban farmer, trainer and community organizer. Visit the show notes page here: http://jkhealthtribe.com/23
