When Blake Brewer was 19, his family went on vacation to Hawaii. The first day he and his father went swimming in the water when his father was suddenly caught up in a rough spot known as Witches Brew. After a frantic attempt to save him, Blake watched as his dad's life slipped away before his very eyes, and he was pronounced dead. While dealing with the grief of this sudden loss, Blake's mother walked up to him a few hours later and handed him a “gift” she had found that was addressed to him and his siblings. It was a letter from his father. The words that letter contained would end up leaving the greatest impact on his life. They would later lead him on his mission to help other parents provide the same impact for their own children via The Legacy Letter Challenge. On a family vacation in Hawaii, Blake lost his father in a tragic swimming accident. He literally died in his arms as he tried to rescue him. When he and the rest of his family finally returned to the condo from the hospital, his mother appeared in the doorway to his room and said "I have something for you and it's from your dad. I found it in his briefcase." His mom walked across the room and handed him a letter. At the top it said "Dear Blake, Natalie, and Marcus." Blake's dad, not knowing he was about to die, spent the last couple months of his life writing his children a letter that literally changed their lives, and has had a God-ordained ripple effect that will impact other fathers and their children for generations to come. #12: Founder of the Legacy Letter Challenge, Blake Brewer, is on a mission to help 1 million dads write at least 1 meaningful, well-written, lasting letter to their children. After Blake's freshman year of college his family went on the trip of a lifetime to Hawaii. Unfortunately, that trip would be remembered for different reasons. One morning Blake and his dad were out snorkeling. They got caught up in some rough water in what is called Witches Brew. Blake saw his dad struggling and going under the water. Despite his best efforts to save his dad, his dad drowned that morning. Later that afternoon back at the condo his mother handed Blake a letter that his dad was going to give him on that trip. His dad had no idea that it would be his last words to Blake. To this day those words guide Blake's life and inspired him to encourage and help dads all over the world write a meaningful, well-written, letter to their children. In this show, Blake also touches on how he overcame adversity and loss, being intentional each day, living on the edge, and stretching yourself to grow, what it means to be a good father, and the Legacy Letter Challenge. The Legacy Letter Challenge is one of the best and most intentional ways to make sure your words as a father are etched in the legacy of your children. From professional athletes and coaches to business leaders, Blake has helped so many dads write their legacy letters to their children. Today's episode hits home for us, with Father's day coming up we wanted to do an episode specifically for all the dads out there. Over the past few years, we both learned firsthand that being a dad is one of the toughest challenges, and most of the time it's hard to make sure we're doing the right thing. However, to say raising kids is all bad would be wildly inaccurate. The truth is, we will never truly understand exactly how important and impactful it is for us to parent our children. The choices our kids make, the careers they choose, what they dream about at night, the friends they make and everything in between is dictated by what we do and say as Dads. You may read that and your chest starts to get tight and you think...what if I mess them up? The pressure can start to set in quickly, right? We totally understand. That is why today we want to reframe or maybe rewire your thoughts around parenting and being a Father. Welcome back to The Unlimited Potential Show, our guest today is Blake Brewer, CEO and founder of The Legacy Letter Challenge. He is a father on a mission to help 1 million dads be more successful with their kids by writing Legacy Letters. You'll hear how The Legacy Letter challenge got started, and how the worst day of Blake's life created a passion for helping dad's connect and inspire their children. Listen in as Blake talks about his own dad and the impact he made in Blake's life by writing a letter filled with love, advice, and encouragement that would bring comfort in the most painful time of life. You will learn about the true importance of Fatherhood, the one thing your kid may need to hear from you and more. By the end you will know how you can write your own legacy letter, and leave a lasting impression on your kids that will have them feeling loved and understood even after you're long gone. Disclaimer: Everyone in the family is welcome in this episode! You don't have to be a Dad to be impacted by Blakes story. The last thing we will say is this episode gets emotional at times as Blake shares the story of when his dad passed. Blake is on a mission to help 1 MILLION DADS write at least one well-written, meaningful, lasting LEGACY LETTER to their children. You will be inspired and moved by Blake's story of how his dad's letter changed his life forever. As the founder of the Legacy Letter Challenge, Blake's mission is to empower father's to connect with their children, lead their families, and run their God-given race with endurance. Blake has a wonderful wife and three children under 5. Blake's claim: "A father's voice is the most powerful voice on the planet." A legacy letter answers these three questions: 1. How do you really feel about me? 2. What do you believe about me? 3. What are your hopes for me? FOLLOW ON INSTAGRAM: @theendurance_ Blake absolutely loves being a father. As he leads his family and his children, he draws from many mentors, but none more important than his late father Larry Brewer. Blake just shared this with me. You will be so inspired to write your legacy letter to your kids: Thought you might like this... One of the dads in Georgia just completed the Legacy Letter Challenge and he's excited about what he gets to give his son. Just imagine if every kid in America had a letter like this from their dad?! This kid is about to go conquer the world because he knows he has a dad that loves him and believes in him! We've got to get past a million...that's just the starting point! Cristian, I'm writing this letter because words are powerful, but more than spoken words, written words are forever. When I speak with you about life I do it with a great deal of intention. This letter is with even more intention, because I want you to know how much you mean to me. It seems like yesterday that you were laying on my chest for the very first time. You were only a few hours old and exhausted from coming into this world. Mom was exhausted too. She needed rest and so did you. I took you from her and within a few moments you fell asleep on my chest, I watched the Cowboys play the Dolphins. Our first football game. Mom was able to fall asleep and get some well needed rest too. I can remember like it was yesterday, when I dropped you off in Kindergarten and told you to get out to the car for the first time on your own. We had talked about it and I knew you could do it. You trusted me and walked out of the car with confidence. I drove around and parked so fast and ran in to the school to make sure you were ok. You saw me looking in your classroom and smiled at me. That is only one of thousands of times I have been proud of you. I have so many things I need to share with you, but before I get there I want say I'm sorry for any time I lost patience with you. For anytime I my actions did not align with my words. I want to say I'm sorry for not always being kind to your mother. I am sorry for not always living up to my own expectations of myself as your father. I desire to be perfect for you, but you and I both know that perfection doesn't exist. But if I could, I would want to be that for you as you have made me a better man. If there is only one thing I want you to take care away from this letter, it is that I LOVE YOU. I know I tell you every single day of your life, but words can not express how deeply I love you. AS I type this out all I can do is picture your smile, your laughter, your excitement for life as you describe a video game or tell me a story. I love your heart for people and your attention to detail. I always loved how your teachers would tell mom and I how you always mentioned details of stories that other kids rarely picked up on. I love how you ask questions. I love how you learn from your mistakes. I love how you solve problems. I love how you love me. I love when you curl up to me in the morning on the couch. I love how you ask me to tuck you in and tell me about your day. I love that when I lay in your bed in the morning you reach over and hug me. I love how you get back up after you fall. I love how much you trust me. I love how you tell me things you struggle with and talk to me about anything. Cristian I am proud of the individual that you are. You think independently and critically think. You don't just think selfishly, but you consider others in your thought process. I am proud of you because you stay true to yourself even though it may not be popular with others. Being willing to be true to yourself even though you may hurt/offend others, I believe is a key to a happy life. And you do that even at a young age. I am proud of you and admire you for that quality. I believe in you, I know you are capable of great things. I want you to believe in yourself even more than I do. I remember when you were playing baseball in the championship game. You were going up to bat for the last time of the year. We needed one run to with the game. You were warming up to go up to bat. You had been walked numerous times and hadn't had a hit in several games. I said to you “you are going to go and get the game winning run. You are a hitter, go get this hit. Then you will steal second and third bases. Then you will get a the game winning run. I believe in you.” You went up and had your best hit ever. I believed in you, but after you did it, then you believed and now know you can do that. Daddy will always believe in you because you continue to give me reason to. You are going to be faced with many different challenges in life. But there are a few things you need to always remember, these have served me in my own life. • Respond, do not react. Take some time to think about how you want to respond to things that draw emotions in you. • Respect yourself first and then respecting others will come naturally. • Trust your instincts (your gut). God gave you this intuition for a reason and it is almost always correct. • Stay true to you and your beliefs, the world will try to change who you are. God made your perfectly in His image and you are ENOUGH. • Serve others and you will be filled with all of the riches of life. Relationships are the most important thing you can have in this journey we call life. Value people not things. • Value experiences – trips, museums, live concerts, Live sporting events ,over material things – Because memories last a lifetime – but things eventually get thrown away and replaced. As I stated at the beginning of this letter, my intention is for you to know how much you mean to me and how much I love you. There are so many lessons I could share, there are so many things I want to say, but none of them matter if you don't know how much YOU matter to ME. I will always be here for you, even when I'm not around. When I speak with you about your day, in the car, during daddy talk time, whenever we talk, my hope is that when I'm not around, you say to yourself “What would make Dad proud” and you make the best decisions in life that you can. When you don't get an answer or are unsure of what I would like. I want you to think “what would make God proud” and then make the best decisions in life that you can. In order to do both of those – you have to have a relationship (the most important thing you can have) with myself and God. Make sure you always talk to God and work on that relationship. It is even more important than your relationship with me. As long as you have a relationship with God, you are guaranteed eternity with me. I love you with every fiber flesh and down to the very deepest depths of my soul. Dad Wow! Can you imagine how Christian responded to his Dad's letter?! What a legacy! Hardly any man that I interview shares a recipe but Blake was excited to share one from his grandmother in her own handwriting! Love it and let me know if you try it! Here's the recipe that my grandmother made. It's my favorite recipe and my mom and now my wife make it for me all the time! : ) Shrimp and Rice Casserole 1 1/2 cups of cooked rice 1 can mushroom soup Green Onions (4 to 6 T) 3 T Chopped Bell Pepper 2 T melted butter 1 T Lemon Juice 1/2 t worsteshire sauce 1/2 t dry mustard 1/4 t peppers 10 oz frozen cooked shrimp 1 1/2 grated cheddar cheese Mix all together, pour in casserole dish Bake 35 min @ 375 Thanks, Blake. In today’s episode, our guest is Blake Brewer who has a goal to help millions of dads write at least one very well-written, meaningful, lasting legacy level for their children to remind their years after they're gone. He'll share with us his experience and why it is such a heavy part of his heart. We are here today to listen to his story, let's listen to this episode! [10:07] Why should we listen to you? I'm the type of guy who starts asking the questions. I just love people and I love hearing their stories, and so you start asking questions, and you start learning so many different things about people, which is also because of that, I've learned a lot of different things about people. And that's the reason you might want to listen to me is that I've taken the things that I've learned from different people and I try to share with others. [10:52] How did Legacy Letter Concept start? My mission was born out of a personal tragedy. I've had the opportunity to share this story all over the country, in a lot of different stages. I think about my five-year-old, my three-year-old, my six-month-old, and I'm doing the best that I can to be a good dad. And I recognize how hard it is in this world that we are in to be a good dad. I ended up not even being someone who connected with their children at the level that I wanted to. I didn't guide them the way that I wanted to wasn't the voice in their life that they needed. And I look at around the world. And I see the world is coming at my children, is coming for your children. [23:35] God was calling me to help other dads. My dad had written this letter to me that I've got to help other dads write this letter. And so that's how we get started on the mission. [24:52] I tell people what is the best time to write your letter? Well, the best time to write your letter was the day that you're trying was born. The second best time is today. And absolutely the day that you die, your letter will take on will be that much more powerful. I help dads utilize the memories that they have for their children to really, almost alter the stories that that their child tells themselves as a dad. You have the power to come in and completely change that story and change that narrative that they're negative can develop into a positive. And then we also worked through apologies, and regrets, which is really powerful when a dad does that. And so you do all these sections, then you put it together as a letter at the end. [30:24] What's God’s promise to the world when he created you? I think with my life, I'm just trying to serve people and ultimately say with my life this is not about me. I'm not here because of anything I did. It's ultimately all his glory. So when we win a million dads write this letter, it's not because of anything I did. There's only things that God did open the doors to make this happen. Key Quotes [13:50-14:00] “Having a good father is like having that perfect wind behind the sailboat who can just make the sailboat go.” [27:12-27:16] “It's not about keeping them from failures. It's about learning from those and getting past it.” Learn more about Blake Brewer on: Website: https://www.legacyletterchallenge.com/
