Adding value to clients is a core value over here at the Efficient Advisor. Today's episode is going to be a game changer for you when it comes to a simple-to-execute value add that is huge on impact. If you know me, you know when it comes to adding value we're looking for two things… 1) How much impact does it actually have on your clients?... and 2) What is the difficulty to execute said value add? When I come across something that is lower on difficulty and HIGH on impact… I am here for it and I cannot wait to share it with this community. Today's guest, Blake Brewer, is something really special. He's on a mission to help parents create a lasting legacy beyond finances for their children and he partners with financial advisors to help them become indispensable in their clients' lives. Legacy Letter - which is this awesome idea - was just featured on the Today Show. It's that cool. And, at the end of the episode I'm going to share with you how I would create a process around this value add and how I would incorporate this into my business themes to increase my client impact. Blake joins us today to share how his father inspired him to help parents create legacies for their children. He discusses the power of words and writing letters and explains how he helps financial advisors make an impact. Get the tissues out… this story is moving. Blake Brewer is on a mission to help 1 million dads and moms leave a lasting legacy for their children. His story is personal to me. When our kids were preschoolers, I had a mom friend with kids the same ages as ours. One day she just had a feeling that she should write her children a letter telling them how much she loved them among other meaningful messages, in case anything ever happened to her. A few weeks later, their family went boating and a terrible accident took her life as they were docking the boat at the end of the day. I know those kids, now young adults, treasure their mother's words to them. Blake has a similar story and he shares it with you in this episode of Parenting in the First 3 Years. This passion came from a personal tragedy that pushed him to encourage parents to open up more through words. His dad wrote a letter when he was 19 that changed his life. When Blake Brewer was 19, his family went on vacation to Hawaii. The first day he and his father went swimming in the water when his father was suddenly caught up in a rough spot known as Witches Brew. After a frantic attempt to save him, Blake watched as his dad's life slipped away before his very eyes, and he was pronounced dead. While dealing with the grief of this sudden loss, Blake's mother walked up to him a few hours later and handed him a “gift” she had found that was addressed to him and his siblings. It was a letter from his father. The words that letter contained would end up leaving the greatest impact on his life. They would later lead him on his mission to help other parents provide the same impact for their own children via The Legacy Letter Challenge. Blake Brewer is on a mission to help 1 million dads write at least one well-written, meaningful, lasting Legacy Letter to their children. Today, we're digging into the importance of our parent's words, how to prepare your heart and mind to write this letter, the three things that everyone needs to hear from their Dad and Mom, and how to ask forgiveness as a parent. So if you want to share the words that best communicate your heart… tune in now! Table of contentsWhy Write Down Your LegacyThe Legacy Letter that Started it AllHelping 1 Million DadsCrafting Your Legacy LetterThe Parent “Wound”Asking ForgivenessThe Most Important Components of Your Legacy LetterBook A Strategy Call Why Write Down Your Legacy Writing a legacy letter, as we'll explore, is an opportunity to create a tremendous impact in the lives of your children. It's actually important for the same reason life insurance is important on a security level–because one day, you won't be around. And like life insurance, a legacy letter can help your children move forward with as few obstacles as possible.  Lucas and I wrote legacy letters for our children after my near-death experience a few years ago. At the time, we wondered: What if we don't have all the decades ahead that we hope for? How would we be able to communicate all the most important thoughts and lessons to our daughters? A legacy letter is your opportunity to leave a tangible piece of yourself and your wisdom with your children and loved ones. That way, no matter what the future brings, you can be confident that all of your most important thoughts will make it into your children's hands. It's a powerful tool for families, especially for families looking to build a robust, multi-generational structure for the future. The Legacy Letter that Started it All [5:44] Our guest, Blake Brewer, shares his own experience of loss, and how that led to his role in helping families create their legacy letters. After his father's passing, which was incredibly sudden, Blake's mother gave him the letter his father had written for him. [10:43] “Even before I finished the letter, I felt so loved, that my dad would take the time to write this letter. I don't know what he gave up, what he sacrificed, what TV show he didn't watch; but my dad took the time to write down his thoughts and feelings about us, and gave some great life advice. The last line of this letter, only God could have allowed my dad to write it. My dad wrote, ‘As you follow Christ, you'll often find yourself in the minority here on Earth, but I can assure you in Heaven, you'll be in the majority…'” The words were the exact comfort that Blake needed at that moment and helped him to begin processing his grief. In fact, it helped him to process his grief in a healthy way, thanks to his father's words. He says it was that letter that changed his life.  [12:05] “My dad had life insurance, so I'm grateful for that as well. My mom didn't have to go to work, our life stayed the same, and I'm thankful for that. But this letter is worth just as much as the money that my dad provided for us.” Helping 1 Million Dads A few years ago, Blake decided to write his own letter to his children, so that they would have something of him when they needed it most. But when he sat down to start writing, he saw how difficult it was. He had plenty of ideas to put onto the page, but organizing them into the right words was hard. Other fathers he had talked to over the years, who resonated with Blake's story, had also found the process difficult.  At the same time, God brought several other men into his life that received letters from their fathers. And these letters also changed their trajectory.

What will Happen to our families long after we are gone? This is something we as fathers don't want to really talk or think about. Some of us fathers have professions in which we might not come home if we or someone else make a mistake. I know I'am guilty of never giving this much thought, What are our last words to our kids? what bit of advice or wisdom would you leave them? Our guest Blake Brewer is on a mission to help fathers write a Legacy Letter to their children. His "why"was born out of a tragic accident that claimed the very life of his hero....His father. As he dealt with the grief and shock of having just watched his father drown, Blakes mother found some letters that his father had been writing to him and his siblings. Which started, "Dear Blake". On a simple sheet of paper, his father shared his thoughts, wisdom, and encouragement which has continued to help Blake through his life. #12: Founder of the Legacy Letter Challenge, Blake Brewer, is on a mission to help 1 million dads write at least 1 meaningful, well-written, lasting letter to their children. After Blake's freshman year of college his family went on the trip of a lifetime to Hawaii. Unfortunately, that trip would be remembered for different reasons. One morning Blake and his dad were out snorkeling. They got caught up in some rough water in what is called Witches Brew. Blake saw his dad struggling and going under the water. Despite his best efforts to save his dad, his dad drowned that morning. Later that afternoon back at the condo his mother handed Blake a letter that his dad was going to give him on that trip. His dad had no idea that it would be his last words to Blake. To this day those words guide Blake's life and inspired him to encourage and help dads all over the world write a meaningful, well-written, letter to their children. In this show, Blake also touches on how he overcame adversity and loss, being intentional each day, living on the edge, and stretching yourself to grow, what it means to be a good father, and the Legacy Letter Challenge. The Legacy Letter Challenge is one of the best and most intentional ways to make sure your words as a father are etched in the legacy of your children. From professional athletes and coaches to business leaders, Blake has helped so many dads write their legacy letters to their children. If you want to learn more about Blake and the Legacy Letter Changgle check out:www.legacyletterchallenge.com Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theendurance_/Twitter - https://twitter.com/legacy_letter
