Decision making during high stress , life and death situation is difficult for most well trained first responders and the military personnel.  With that being said, many Americans have found themselves listening to soundbites and watching incomplete clips of tragic events that forever change men and women's life.  At core of each watched or listen to encounter, is a burning question of why did this event occur as it did. Do I have all the information? Was it the police officers fault? Is it the suspects fault? Is it the systems fault? The outcry for answers is often deafening. What so many armchair critics and keyboard warriors fail to understand is that there are decades of research when it comes to Human Performance and Human Dynamics. Empirically, peer reviewed research is constantly informing training commissions across the nation on the best way to approach potentially deadly situations, but we have to listen to the data and implement the findings. At the center of this research is the Force Science Institute (FSI) FSI is led by executive director Dr. William “Bill” Lewinski.  Dr. Bill Lewinski has spent the better part of his life asking critical questions about how the human body works under and incredible amount of stress.  Which is faster, Action or Reaction? What is the human experience with time distortion? How do we create experts?  What is at the route of human error and how do we mitigate against the bodies tendency toward self preservation verses the best decision when a decision must be made.  How does experiential bias impact a man or woman when faced with a decision that needs to be made in under 1 second?  During this interview with Dr. Bill, he sheds some light on a few of these questions during our time together. This is a man that has sacrificed so much in the name of science and has provided vetted solutions to help prevent injustices toward the men and women who have sworn to serve and protect the constitution of the United States and the Laws of other nations around the globe.Dr. Lewinski has testified in grand juries, coroner's inquests, arbitration hearings, and both criminal and civil cases throughout North America, in the United Kingdom and Australia. He has trained in Goju Karate (traditional Japanese Karate) since 1967. He is a regional director and a national examiner with Goju Kai Karate Do, U.S.A.  A mission of Force Science® Institute, Ltd. (FSI) is to gather experts from a variety of academic and research disciplines and a wide range of educational institutions in North America and the United Kingdom, to assist in the study of officer and subject behavior primarily in lethal force encounters.  Areas of study include action/reaction parameters, perception - including the relationship of skill level, attention and visual focus to information processing, judgment and effectiveness of action, and also attention and memory. The university researchers FSI has paired with, for research or instruction, have published over 1,000 research articles and 12 textbooks.  Force Science Institute https://www.forcescience.org/Force Science Institute Facebook PageThe Interrupted PodcastThe Interrupted Podcast WebsiteThe Interrupted Podcast Instagram PageThe Interrupted Podcast Facebook PageSteve's Instagram

As children across the nation are preparing to return to school there are many important questions on the topic of school safety beyond the health concerns that parents need to be asking their children, their children's teachers and administrators.  There are many questions about mental health and the toll the pandemic has had on children.  It is critical that we all prepare now and know the risks that our schools face, not so  we will live in a constant state of fear, but that we might be informed to have a greater level of confidence that the appropriate mitigation strategies are implemented to save the most lives should an act of evil come to our communities. "Knowledge diminishes fear," and this conversation with (Ret.) Chief Tony Pustizzi will move us one step closer to equipping ourselves with the information to engage in tough conversations with the local school systems. Chief Pustizzi was one of the first law enforcement officers on scene at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida on February 14, 2018.  He quickly had to assume command of an incredibly chaotic crime scene during the Active Shooter situation at that school.  In a matter of 2 hours there were nearly 700 officers on scene  and the management of every resource was vital to save the most  lives as possible.  That terrible day, 17 innocent people were killed and another 17 were injured. Chief Pustizzi shares about the many lessons learned that day and the days that would follow in the wake of this unfathomable act of evil.Tony Pustizzi Bio:Tony Pustizzi began his career with the Coral Springs Police Department in 1988.  Over his 30-year tenure, he supervised every unit within the agency with a strong emphasis on investigations, including homicide and special victims.  Additionally, he served on the SWAT team for 15 years, the last eight of which as team commander. Tony rose through the ranks to ultimately become chief of police in 2012.  He also served as the city's interim city manager and retired in March 2018 as the chief of police/deputy city manager.  In January 2019, Tony came out of retirement to serve as the special counsel to the new sheriff of Broward County upon his appointment by the governor of the state of Florida.  He graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in criminology and law and received a master's degree in public administration from Florida Atlantic University. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the Southern Police Institute Command Officer's Course, FBI's LEEDA course, Center for Creative Leadership Program and Florida Atlantic University's Executive Leadership Program. Tony has served as state president for the Florida chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates, the chair for the National Benchmark Cities Chief's Association, an executive board member of the South Florida High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program, and an executive board member of the Broward County Chiefs of Police Association. As owner of Four Star Strategies, Inc., Tony conducts training throughout the country on school and workplace violence preparedness. Merry Christmas! Episode 24 is a special tribute to Melvin Miller, my maternal grandfather. We originally planned to do several interviews for a series about his life, but those plans were interrupted, like so many in 2020, when Pa quietly passed away in June. Today you will hear snapshots from Melvin's early years, which formed many of the values I have come to appreciate and seek to emulate: his work ethic, his views on money, his love for family, and his deep and abiding faith. I hope you'll enjoy this more personal look into my life through the eyes of my grandfather. The following are excerpts from his obituary written by my aunt, Lisa Ballou."In an early, quiet hour of Tuesday, June 2nd, Melvin N. Miller, age 89, passed away at his home in Douglassville, Pennsylvania with an unassailable conviction that his faith would safeguard his journey beyond this life and that he was joining his beloved wife, Betty, and his savior, Jesus Christ, in eternal rest. "Melvin was born on September 27th, 1930 in New Berlinville, Pennsylvania. He served as a Master Sergeant in the National Guard and graduated from Boyertown High in 1948. Melvin was proud of the farming skills he cultivated in his youth. He channeled his deep reverence for nature into a professional career as a purchaser and seller of wood. Boyertown Casket Company, York Casket Company, Mann & Parker Lumber, and Bally Block Company all benefited from his practical knowledge, tactical skills, and ever-present charm. ". . . He was as forthcoming with his praise and thankfulness as he was with his material possessions. In his early adult life, he was honored to donate his services to the Free & Accepted Masons of Columbus, Ohio and later to the Lions Club International in Bally, Pennsylvania. He was a proud, active member of both the St. John Hill U.C.C. and St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Boyertown. His tenor voice rang jubilantly both in the choir and in the congregation.". . . Melvin was deeply devoted to his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Jean Fitts Miller. He doted upon her until her death in 2017. . . ."The Interrupted Podcast WebsiteThe Interrupted Podcast Instagram PageThe Interrupted Outdoors Facebook Page

One of the greatest weeks every year for a hunter, is the time spent in deer camp with likeminded men and women. Sharing strategies, tactics and taking some time to reminisce about past hunts is by far one of the best parts of camp.  This year Steve Hallman joined a great group of guys, in Maine, for a late season muzzleloader hunt. They took a break mid week to talk about how things were going, how the current warm conditions have been impacting the big woods whitetails and have a few laughs along the way. Topics also covered are: the best 2020 hunting moments and Maine bear trapping.
