How can Lemuel Gulliver escape from the Lilliputians? They're only six inches tall – should be a cinch, right? Jonathan Swift, today on The Classic Tales Podcast. Things are moving along nicely. Keep an ear open for when we pull the trigger, hopefully in a couple of weeks! And it's time for the Classic Tales Book Club to meet again! Keep an eye on your inboxes on Tuesday for our monthly newsletter which will contain the zoom link. Our zoom meeting will be on Wednesday, April 10th at 4:00 PM Pacific time, 7:00 PM Eastern. We'll talk about the satirical nature of Gulliver's Travels, and the power of satire. See you then! Follow the link in the show notes to subscribe to our newsletter, and get the zoom link on Tuesday. Mark Twain is quoted as saying that, “a classic is a book which people praise and don't read”. Gulliver's Travels likely fits into this category for a lot of us. We've seen the Max Fleisher cartoon, or the Ray Harryhausen film in the 70s, or the film with Jack Black in 2010. But we've probably never read it. Or we tried, and gave it up. So, what is the lasting appeal of this difficult book? Gulliver's Travels was originally published in 1727. Swift's novel is a satire of British monarchy and Imperialism. He succeeds in taking the mundane, or something we largely take for granted, and pushing it to the extreme to show its absurdity. This goes for everything from governments to our own physical bodies. And yeah, nothing is safe, so get ready for some bodily functions we'd rather not talk about to come front and center. Gulliver records his travels to several different lands of adventure. Instead of going through the entire book now, we'll tackle them one voyage at a time. Then we'll take a breather. This first stint will be the first part of the book – A Voyage to Lilliput in three parts. Gulliver travels to the land of Lilliput, as well as a land of giants, and also visits the dystopian world of the Houyhnhnms (hoo-IH-nims), among others. I hope you like it. And now, A Voyage to Lilliput, part 1 of 3, from Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. Science fiction literature has a rich and fascinating history, spanning centuries and influencing countless minds. Let's embark on a journey through its key moments:Early Precursors:1726: “Gulliver's Travels” by Jonathan Swift: This satirical travel narrative is considered a precursor to modern science fiction. Lemuel Gulliver encounters utopian and dystopian societies during his voyages, including the flying island of Laputa, where scientists conduct experiments with no practical benefit1.1818: “Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus” by Mary Shelley: Shelley's cautionary tale of Victor Frankenstein's monstrous experiment is a warning against unchecked scientific ambition. It challenges the expansion of science without moral context, shocking readers in the deeply religious pre-Victorian era1.Exploration and Adventure:1870: “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” by Jules Verne: Verne's adventure novel introduces Captain Nemo and his undersea adventures on the Nautilus. It inspires real scientific development, including ideas for diving equipment and submarines. Verne's work becomes a forerunner of technology drawing inspiration from science fiction1.Time Travel and Evolution:Late 19th Century: Amid technological advancements (steam engines, telephones, electricity), H.G. Wells introduces the concept of time travel in “The Time Machine”. This novella fuses science journalism with popular romance, anticipating humanity's evolution and the end of our species1.Golden Age and Beyond:1950s: The Golden Age of science fiction sees prolific writers like Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Robert A. Heinlein. Their works elevate science fiction to serious literature2.New Wave: Emerging in the mid-20th century, the New Wave genre incorporates innovative ideas, themes, and styles. It challenges conventions and expands the boundaries of science fiction3.Modern Landscape:Science fiction continues to thrive across mediums—books, movies, and television. Authors explore post-apocalyptic scenarios, alien encounters, robotics, and environmental crises.Today, science fiction remains a powerful lens through which we examine our world, imagine the future, and grapple with ethical dilemmas. In summary, science fiction literature has evolved from satirical beginnings to a genre that shapes our understanding of science, society, and our own humanity.

Each year, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky releases a report entitled the “Festivus' Report on Government Waste.” He catalogs different projects that the federal government has used taxpayer dollars on that, in Paul's estimation, is not a wise use of tax payer funds. Many of these projects are funded through various scientific laboratories and, upon reading the list, looks eerily similar to the adventures of Lemuel Gulliver in Gulliver's Travels, a work of satire by the 18th-century writer Jonathan Swift. In the episode, Matt, Winston, and Josh play a game in which they guess whether or not the experiment is from Jonathan Swift's “Gulliver's Travels” or from Rand Paul's Festivus Report. Then, the group discuss the larger implications of satire and the purposes of scientific investigation. In short, they follow the purposes of satire itself: they use works of classical literature to try and better understand our own culture and our own foibles. What happens when a paranormal consultant remembers an incarcerated Nelson Mandela dying in the 1980s instead of famously being released from his twenty-seven-year sentence in 1990, becoming the first Black President of South Africa and living an additional three decades? The rara avis known as False Memory Syndrome gets rebranded as The Mandela Effect. Though it just as easily could have been named for Lemuel Gulliver, Thomas Jefferson, or Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass, who have all had their biographies altered by nothing more than folktales and the power of suggestion. Join Albort as he reveals societal errors that have been pinned on the bible, cannibalism, Voltaire, Sherlock Holmes, le livre “Monkey Planet” and other victims of The Mandela Effect.
