Hello Librarians! Thanks for joining me. Tell me, how effective is your library advocacy? Do you struggle with getting your key decision makers or your legislators to support your library? If so, this episode is for you.You and I both know that libraries make a difference in the world. You share that message as often as possible with your stakeholders, with your users, with your communities. And yet, I'm willing to bet that for many of you, the critical decision makers are still cutting your budget, reducing your staff, and maybe even taking your space. After all, everything's on the Internet now, right? Who needs librarians and libraries? Can't people just get books from Amazon and information from Google? So here's the thing. It's not enough just to get your decision-makers to listen. You have to get them to agree with you. And how are you going to do that?In fact, I can hear some of you now saying “I've been trying for years to get them to agree! That's the whole point of my advocacy!”In his book This is Marketing, Seth Godin says the biggest mistake is to “Assume that everyone is like you, knows what you know, wants what you want”.They aren't and they don't. Advocacy is marketing. Every library and every librarian needs to learn how to market honestly and effectively. Godin goes on to say that “marketing is the act of making change happen”, and “You haven't made an impact until you've changed someone”. He further states that you have to connect with your audience and gain trust. This requires understanding their worldview and their desires. So how do you get key people to both listen and agree? By learning the language of your listener. By gaining understanding of their worldview and desires and showing directly how funding and supporting your library will help them achieve their goals. For complete show notes and resources, go to masterfullibrarian.com/ep-11

Have you ever been in the position to market library events or services without ever having a course that taught you how? As libraries, we want to break through the noise of all the other messages that people see every day to share the word about all that we have to offer. Having a marketing mindset can create inroads to those we serve and ensure awareness about all we have to offer our communities. On this show, I speak with Kathy Dempsey, author of the book The Accidental Library Marketer and former Chair of the Library Marketing and Communications Conference. Our guest is Cordelia Anderson, a marketing and communications consultant who works primarily with libraries and nonprofits. She is the former director of marketing and communications at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Library in North Carolina.
Molly O'Neill and I discuss her career in publishing from her start in marketing with Clarion Books to her time as an editor with Harper Collins to her current role as a literary agent with Root Literary. She shares the experience of discovering and editing DIVERGENT (and I reveal an embarrassing encounter I had with Veronica Roth). We talk about the relationship between authors and editors and how to keep it from going off kilter, the truth about rejection, and some practical tips for writing the dreaded synopsis. As a special bonus, we're treated to a live reading of ROBERT PATTINSON: ETERNALLY YOURS from one of its coauthors. This episode is packed with insight into the world of publishing and you'll want to listen to it multiple times through. Molly O'Neill is a literary agent with Root Literary. For the past sixteen years, she has held various roles inside the publishing industry: previously, she was an Editor at HarperCollins Children's Books, where she acquired Veronica Roth's juggernaut Divergent series, among many other fantastic projects; the Head of Editorial at Storybird, a publishing/tech start-up; a member of the School and Library Marketing departments at both HarperCollins and Clarion Books; and an Agent at Waxman Leavell Literary Agency. Molly loves the creative process and early-stage project development, is invigorated by business strategy and entrepreneurial thinking, and is fascinated by the intersections of art, commerce, creativity, and innovation. Molly is especially passionate about the people behind books, and takes pride in discovering and evangelizing talented authors and illustrators, expanding the global reach of their work, and finding new ways to build connections and community among creators, readers, stories, and their champions. She hunts for new talent and speaks about the importance of books for young people at a variety of conferences for writers, illustrators, and educators around the world each year, and is on the faculty of the Columbia Publishing Course, where she helps train new generations of publishing professionals. Molly is an alum of Marquette University, an erstwhile Texan, and a current dweller of Brooklyn, NY. She is drawn to authors and artists who constantly challenge themselves, who are adept at communicating with their audiences, who are creative and flexible thinkers, and who have as much enthusiasm for their readers as for their own successes. Wit, strong writing, vivid settings, a passion for craft, or a well-timed reaction gif will always catch her eye. MiddleGradeNinja.com MollyOneillBooks.com RootLiterary.com

I'm getting ready to head to Seattle for ALA Midwinter. So what even IS that? In this episode, I speak to Jenny Choy, the Associate Director for School-Library Marketing for Abrams Books for Young Readers. Jenny tells us the difference between publicity, marketing, and school-library marketing, and gives us the lowdown about what happens behind the booth curtains at a big librarian conference like ALA. What books are on display, and why? Which authors get invited, and why? What does she wish that authors knew about her job? So much great info! Yay!
