To begin the celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, this episode features a conversation with Dr. Catherine Ceniza Choy about her book Asian American Histories of the United States (Beacon Press, 2022). Choy's study identifies pivotal years in Asian American history as the focus of her eight chapters, which includes the beginning of Asian exclusionary policy with the Page Law in 1875, the rapid changes of 1965 and 1969, which saw a growing Asian America in understanding and demographics, to 2020 and the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. In just 175 pages, Choy weaves together the layered histories of exclusion, violence, and resistance to rectify the generalizations that come from a “misunderstanding of Asian Americans and their histories” (Preface, ix).  Catherine Ceniza Choy is an award-winning Asian American historian and professor of ethnic studies at the University of California, Berkeley. San Francisco Public Library workers plan to rally Tuesday, demanding the city provide security guards at all branches to protect staff and patrons amid a rise in dangerous incidents. Most of the city's 28 library locations lack dedicated security officers, and librarians and other workers say they've been forced to intervene in dangerous situations that sometimes turn physical, according to a Monday press release from Service Employees International Union Local 1021, which represents library workers at the city's public branches. The workers are demanding the change as they negotiate with officials for new contracts. "There's tension in the air when there is no trained security around to de-escalate situations," said Jessica Choy, a part-time librarian, in the press release. She said at one branch, she recently approached a man who swore at other patrons and then kicked in a glass door. Choy said having guards at every site "would be a better solution than hoping librarians are able to handle potentially dangerous situations alone." --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

Where do you begin when you want to create your own wellness center? Hey everyone! In this episode of the Wellness Center Creators podcast, I had the pleasure of chatting with Melinda Choy, a practitioner and clinic owner who's making waves in the world of holistic medicine. Melinda's story is pretty incredible - it all started when she saw her parents struggling with various health issues. That's what sparked her interest in alternative remedies and set her on the path to becoming a natural therapies superstar. "I spent a lot of time going in and out of hospitals, doctor's appointments, and various treatments for them. And I always felt somewhat disgruntled with the conventional medical system." Melinda is the real deal. She's got an impressive background, having worked in healthcare administration before becoming a provider herself. She eventually opened her own clinic, Elevate Wellness Center, where she's created a unique business model that brings together a bunch of different practitioners. Talk about a dream team! During our chat, Melinda shared some great insights about her journey and how Elevate Wellness Center came to be. She opened up about how seeing her parents' health struggles fueled her passion for alternative therapies, and how her experiences in the insurance industry and acupuncture school helped shape her vision for a holistic clinic. "There's all these beautiful modalities and people aren't really working synergistically together." Trust me, if you're into holistic medicine or thinking about starting your own clinic, you won't want to miss this episode. Melinda's story is full of valuable tips and inspiration for healthcare providers who want to make a real difference. Plus, we dive into the importance of collaboration, building an awesome team, and creating a welcoming space for patients. So whether you're a healthcare provider, an aspiring entrepreneur, or just someone who's curious about holistic wellness, this episode is definitely worth a listen. Welcome back to Best Friend Therapy and this season's opportunity for Emma to therapise our beloved guinea pig, Elizabeth Day, whilst offering some psycho-education for us all about the Transactional Analysis concept of the “Drama Triangle” - why and how we end up repeating conflict in relationships (be they personal or professional) and what we can do to change it.The Drama Triangle was developed by Stephen Karpman in the 1960's and tells us about three unhealthy roles we take on in drama - the Rescuer, the Persecutor, the Victim.Elizabeth talks about a time she adopted the role of Rescuer as a way of defending her Victim and she recognises the futile task of trying to solve someone's problems when they are not yet ready to change. She also tells us about the guilt she feels when she fails the other person and we uncover the unconscious motivations that are keeping her stuck. Listen along with an example of your own and ask yourself:If you're the Rescuer, what are your feelings and needs? If you're the Persecutor, what can't you tolerate really? If you're the Victim, what are your options to take back control? Emma explains and gives examples of how to channel more productive, constructive Adult communication using Acey Choy's “Winners Triangle”, to remove the conflict and get closer to the results you want.---The original reference for the Drama Triangle is: Karpman MD, Stephen (1968). In the first episode of the podCASS I sit down with Christiaan Choy (@christiaanchoy on Instagram) who is not only an interior designer and creative consultant but a stylist to celebrities and high net-worth individuals. We talk about running away from Anna Wintour, how to become a stylist, his insane collection of vintage designer pieces and what he plans to do with it and the ridiculousness of the quiet luxury trend (and if Manhattan's elite are really dressing his way), amongst other things. Christiaan's website: https://www.christiaanchoy.com/Watch the podCASS: https://www.youtube.com/@thepodCASSpodFollow me on Instagram and Tiktok @itscassiethorpe Subscribe to my youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCx5xZSr6ng-xpMMe09FYsHg

Historian and author of “Asian American Histories of the United States” Catherine Choy joins Adam to discuss the origin of racist ideas such as the “model minority myth,” and dive into the history.
