You might chuckle when you here the Studio 108 Book Club mantra: "Just come: You don't have read the book!"But once you sit in circle with Book Club leader and published author Abby Dosen, you'll feel the welcoming and caring presence of a good friend. And you'll be glad you came! Abby Dosen has practiced at the studio for a couple of years now. Like many, she appreciates the personal time on her mat to support her in being her best self as she and her husband raise their three little girls. She appreciates how challenging it to care for oneself while caring for a family....how easy it is to put off self-care....So, after intentional thought, practice and research, Abby decided to create what she needed and share it with the world. Her book "Self-Care for Moms: A Guided Journal" will be on the shelves in March 2025. (That's not too far away!)This conversation is just as I've said: A welcoming and caring conversation with a good friend. Take a listen... The power of kindness as a means to create meaningful connections between people cannot be overstated. It is part of a social cycle in which at least one dominant participant extends a visible hand or a virtual olive branch to gain trust and offer genuine, authentic assistance. When we truly understand that each of our lives is intertwined with few degrees of separation, kindness, compassion, and collaboration flow much more naturally in interpersonal interactions, socially, in the workplace, and extending into the community. In short, we are in this together. Kindness has everything to do with solid social or people skills, and when you work on perfecting the skill of selflessness, you will find it easier to strike up conversations, speak from your heart on stage, and connect with people with the power of a super magnet. Donna Cameron has spent her career working with nonprofit organizations and causes—as an executive, consultant, trainer, and volunteer. She has seen kindness in action and been awed by its power to transform. When she committed to a year of living kindly she considered herself a reasonably nice person (with occasional lapses into bitchiness), but she knew that true kindness was a step above—and over the course of that year, she learned that it takes practice, patience, and understanding . . . not to mention a sense of humor. Out of her experience was born the book A Year of Living Kindly. We chat about the book, kindness and why it's needed more than ever these days. The recipient of multiple writing awards, Cameron has published numerous articles and, in 2011, coauthored (with Kristen Leathers) One Hill, Many Voices: Stories of Hope and Healing. Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Donna now lives in a suburb of Seattle with her husband. At the beginning of 2015, Donna Cameron embarked on a year of conscious kindness. She tried to make a mindful and concerted effort to choose kindness: to be kind, think kind thoughts, and respond to unkindness with compassion. She has documented the lessons learned in her blog, A Year of Living Kindly: adventures in trying to live a life of kindness. After many years of non-profit management, Donna continues to work with organizations to help them determine their missions and visions, and aid them in creating and executing future plans. She consults with boards and leaders to help them identify their values and increase their own individual efficacy, as well as the effectiveness of their organizations. Donna Cameron's kindness also comes in the form of a book she co-authored in which she allows people to tell the transformative stories of their cancer journeys. It's called One Hill, Many Voices: Stories of Hope and Healing. You can follow the lessons of kindness yet to come through Donna's blog at ayearoflivingkindly.com.
This week we talk to Kelly Krause. Honestly, what doesn’t this wonder woman do? She’s the programming director of SXSW Interactive, she writes a monthly column for camillestyles.com, she’s an ambassador for cycling company Rapha, she’s been a CreativeMornings speaker and she was named one of Marie Claire’s 50 Most Connected Women in America. So, in short, she’s awesome. We also asked her about her latest Living Kindly column about how to ask for what you really want. She schooled us on how to be direct yet nice. One tip she had was to visualize those No Fear shirts from the ’90s. And as always, keep the giggles going and follow along our Instagram @IWasJustSayingThat
