You might chuckle when you here the Studio 108 Book Club mantra: "Just come: You don't have read the book!"But once you sit in circle with Book Club leader and published author Abby Dosen, you'll feel the welcoming and caring presence of a good friend. And you'll be glad you came! Abby Dosen has practiced at the studio for a couple of years now. Like many, she appreciates the personal time on her mat to support her in being her best self as she and her husband raise their three little girls. She appreciates how challenging it to care for oneself while caring for a family....how easy it is to put off self-care....So, after intentional thought, practice and research, Abby decided to create what she needed and share it with the world. Her book "Self-Care for Moms: A Guided Journal" will be on the shelves in March 2025. Send us a textInstead of my usual “Emotional Abuse Is Real” content this week, I have another special bonus episode for your listening pleasure. I'm back as a guest on Krista Dykes' “Secret Mom Hacks” podcast, and this time we are talking about one of my favorite topics: Self-care for moms (a quick note on that: You do NOT have to be a mom to indulge in any of the self-care suggestions I make on this episode. Everyone needs self-care.) Krista also allows me to share about my terrible experience with a postpartum doula when my daughter was born eight years ago. To be clear, I think postpartum doulas offer wonderful support to moms, but as you'll discover from listening to my cautionary tale, it's imperative that you do your research before hiring someone for this critical period after your child arrives. As always, I'm so grateful to Krista for letting me chat with her about these subjects, and I'm thrilled to now share it as a bonus on my own podcast feed. “Emotional Abuse Is Real” will return with brand-new guests next week on October 23. Until then, please enjoy this bonus episode of my recent appearance on “Secret Mom Hacks.” Get the show notes for this episode here, including links to the articles referenced.Support the showGet my free download, "Discover Your Brand Voice in 3 Easy Steps"Follow me on InstagramListen to the podcast on YouTubePlease support the show by buying me a coffee! You can also reach me through my professional websiteIf you're interested in sharing your story on the podcast, please fill out this form. You can also drop me a line at hello@sareneleedswrites.com or DM me on Instagram. Time management help: https://www.simplyconvivial.com/stop-overwhelmBe a happy wife - at first it seems odd that the first intimacy skill is self-care, is about yourself, but it's all part of taking responsibility for yourself. Start with yourself, not with what other people are doing or saying. Many unhappy wives and homemakers think martyrdom is holiness, that sacrificial love means never thinking about yourself at all - but there is no guilt for taking showers, for enjoying beautifying yourself, for resting with a magazine and a hot cup of coffee, for doing an exercise class or taking music lessons. How can we help our families become flourishing people without also taking the time to flourish ourselves and show them how it's done? How can we help our families become flourishing people without also taking the time to flourish ourselves and show them how it's done? I think a lot of the examples of self-care in Empowered Wife are examples of how not to make your contentment and happiness dependent on other people, but just enjoy life as your own person.Join Convivial Circle to read, discuss, and apply this book with Stefani: https://convivialcircle.comMystie Winckler encourages moms to organize their attitudes and get traction at home so we are no longer overwhelmed or frustrated with homemaking. Self-care can sound like another chore. Seriously, who has time for a bubble bath? And is that really the best use of 20 free minutes, assuming we had them? But as Haley Jena points out in this article for What To Expect, self-care isn't selfish. It's what we need in order to keep going as parents. It's not optional. In this episode, we discuss what definitely doesn't work for us, what kind of does, and what we're going to start (like reading actual books and not just our phones). In this episode, Kelsey interviews Denise Jelinek about the concept of a sacred self-image and the importance of self-care for women. Denise emphasizes the need for women to prioritize their own well-being and recognize their unique value and purpose. She explains how societal influences and external expectations often lead to self-neglect and offers practical steps to develop a healthier self-image. Denise highlights the significance of tuning into one's feelings and needs as a starting point for self-care. She introduces a five-day challenge, encouraging listeners to ask themselves two questions throughout the day: "What am I feeling?" and "What do I need?" This simple exercise helps individuals become more aware of their emotions and real needs, separate from self-sabotaging behaviors such as overeating or excessive phone use. The conversation delves into the root causes of self-neglect, such as society's emphasis on external measures of success and the avoidance of uncomfortable feelings. Denise encourages listeners to embrace their quirks and explore their unique qualities, acknowledging that each person has a specific role and purpose in the world. By understanding and valuing themselves, women can better care for others and live a more fulfilling life. The episode concludes with practical suggestions for fostering a healthier self-image, including engaging in introspection, practicing stillness and reflection, and inviting the Lord into the journey. Denise invites listeners to write a letter to themselves, expressing God's love and perception of their unique qualities. She also encourages individuals to create moments of stillness, where they can ask the Lord for guidance and gain insight into their true selves. VOTE FOR ME TO BECOME A HOTWORX VIRTUAL INSTRUCTOR! Have you ever had a gut feeling to go down a new path? Life and transformation is all about following your gut and the bread crumbs along the way that can led to opportunities you never thought possible. Being a group fitness instructor as certainly opened up new opportunities in my life that I never expected (like auditioning to become a HOTWORX VIRTUAL INSTRUCTOR!) and it all started with a gut feeling, a decision to take action and just watching what unfolds from there. I would have never gone down this path or had the confidence to if not for daily movement and showing myself what I'm capable of in a workout and how that applies to life as well. And that's exactly what we're chatting about today with our guest, HOTWORX VIRTUAL INSTRUCTOR, Ashlee Buchert. I met Ashlee virtually as a virtual instructor on the screen at HOTWORX and loved her teaching style and how she could relate to me through the screen (very important as an online or virtual fitness instructor!) Once I started to follow her on social, I realized she and I share a lot of the same beliefs and even some similar backgrounds (I too taught Insanity, cycleBar and she set foot inside of my HOTWORX home studio!) and I loved how small moments in her life, small decisions lead down a path she never could have dreamed of and I thought you would appreciate this message as well! Fitness can do that for you too not just as a instructor, but as a participant showing yourself what you are capable of and how that applies to your LIFE. This is an inspiring story of being open to opportunities, listening to your gut and following the bread crumbs along the way to and how that can impact not only your lives but others as well. Overwhelmed moms are often told to carve out time for “self-care,” from bubble baths to massages. But not only does that version of self-care for moms add more to our neverending to-do list—it also does not address the real problems that are contributing to burnout. Real self-care for moms isn't about what we do or what we buy—it's about mindset shifts that change the way we approach motherhood. Today, I'm joined by psychiatrist Dr. Pooja Lakshmin, author of Real Self-Care, to discuss self-care principles for moms and how we can prioritize our mental health. My beautiful mama.. we have all experienced ‘mom guilt' to some degree or another. The thing is…we don't NEED it to take control over us. It does not define who we are as a person and who we are as a mama. I feel this all stems from conditioning. What I mean by that is how society believes we are ‘supposed to be' as moms. I invite you to think of this human and soul experience in a new way. A way where you create your own experience on motherhood. Ask yourself, ‘How do I DESIRE motherhood to feel for me?' It's not what your best friend is doing, not your mom, not your mother in law, not your coworker. When mom guilt comes your way, I invite you to see it as an energetic invitation So you can clean up energetic leaks I explain HOW in this episode! Get ready to feel light and free. You will learn how to set new energetic standards to prioritize yourself with ease & enjoy motherhood guilt-free.
