He was sent into orbit to assemble the machine that would save what was left of civilization—but finishing the job may mean never coming home. With his oxygen running thin and the world turning silently below him, one decision will decide who controls humanity's future. A Long Way Back by Ben Bova. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Before he became one of the most respected names in modern hard science fiction, Ben Bova was a kid growing up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, born November 8, 1932, discovering the future one pulp magazine at a time.Like many writers of his generation, Bova fell in love with science fiction as a reader first. That early fascination stayed with him. He studied journalism at Temple University, served in the U.S. Army, and eventually stepped into publishing — not just as a writer, but as an editor who would help shape the direction of the field itself.Ben Bova wrote more than 100 short stories and more than 20 novels. He didn't write about magical futures. He wrote about futures we could build. But before his reputation as a novelist took off, he became one of the most influential editors in science fiction history. In 1972, he succeeded John W. Campbell as editor of Analog Science Fiction and Fact — a monumental moment in the genre. Under Bova's leadership, Analog continued its tradition of serious, science-based storytelling. For his editorial work, he won the Hugo Award for Best Professional Editor six consecutive times, from 1973 through 1978.Bova also served as President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.Today's story was his very first science fiction short story — the beginning of a career that would span decades and help define modern hard science fiction. From Amazing Science Fiction Stories in February 1960 our story begins on page 6, A Long Way Back by Ben Bova…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, An automated giant is crippled in space, and the only man who can save it swore he would never touch a liner again. In a world where machines have ended hunger and hardship, two men discover that being unnecessary can hurt more than being poor. In 2000, he was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. By every measure, he's one of the giants of the field. And somehow… until today, we've only narrated one of his stories — Duel on Syrtis. We will discover our story on page 85 in Astounding Science Fiction, November 1950, Quixote And The Windmill by Poul Anderson…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, He was sent into orbit to assemble the machine that would save what was left of civilization—but finishing the job may mean never coming home. In this conversation, Sabrina Stanley reflects on returning to competition after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the peak of her ultrarunning career. She recounts the medical uncertainty that followed her initial diagnosis, the surgeries, chemotherapy, and ongoing immunotherapy that reshaped more than a year of her life. Stanley discusses racing again while still in recovery, including her recent return at the Arc of Attrition 100, and what it meant to simply reach the start line. She also speaks candidly about her complicated relationship with the sport itself -why she doesn't closely follow ultrarunning, how she intentionally limits her exposure to public opinion, and how she has built a professional career largely insulated from external narratives. The conversation touches on her partnership with OnlyFans, her views on athlete autonomy and body regulation, and the tradeoffs of stepping outside traditional sponsorship models while continuing to pursue elite performance.Timestamps:00:00 Sabrina's Unique Perspective on Ultra Running06:14 The Misunderstood World of OnlyFans12:03 The Impact of Ovarian Cancer on Sabrina's Career24:30 Navigating Cancer and Social Connections27:55 Training Through Treatment: A Personal Journey39:01 The Ongoing Battle: Living with Uncertainty44:56 Racing Again, Arc of Attrition 100 MilerPartners:Raide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains (https://raideresearch.com/singletrack)Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next order (https://www.precisionhydration.com/planner/?utm_source=partner&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=singletrack)Norda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever made (https://nordarun.com/)Janji - premium trail running apparel (https://janji.com/)Support the show
This week, Nik sits down with his friend Man Phung for a two-part conversation that's as real as it gets. Man's path through aviation is full of twists, setbacks, and victories—and at the heart of it all is a powerful message: don't quit. Man fell in love with aviation as a kid in Hawaii, saving money as a teenager to earn most of his ratings before he even turned 18. But when the money ran out, he stepped away from flying for nearly two decades, building a successful career in sales and business. Then, during the hiring boom, Man reignited his aviation dream—buying his own airplane, building hours, and grinding through training while balancing family and work life. Along the way, there were engine failures, an off-airport landing, multiple checkride failures, and plenty of moments where it would have been easier to give up. Instead, Man doubled down, gave himself grace, and kept pushing forward. In this conversation, you'll hear: How a discovery flight in Honolulu lit the spark for Man's aviation dream The realities of training as a teenager with limited resources Why he stepped away from flying for 20 years—and what brought him back What it takes to buy your own airplane to build time (including smart financial strategies) The story of surviving an engine failure and off-airport landing Lessons learned from failed checkrides and the power of slowing down Why persistence, patience, and tenacity are the real keys to a long aviation career Man's story is a reminder that aviation isn't just about flying airplanes—it's about resilience. Alison Holt, BBC social affairs editor, has been given exceptional access to the clients of a Nottingham charity that works to reintegrate men who have been convicted of sexual offences. 'John, Matt, Dan and Liam', not their real names, are determined to turn their lives around after prison sentences. We hear how they work towards this with the help of the staff and volunteers at the Safer Living Foundation, the only charity of its sort in the country. Always mindful of the victims of sexual crime, the principal aim is to prevent further offending and the creation of further harm. There are hurdles to overcome - public abhorrence, plus grave difficulties with accommodation and work among them . The Foundation also runs Aurora, an online advice scheme for people who have not offended but who are worried about their sexual thoughts.
