Tracking your symptoms can be incredibly helpful in revealing patterns. When we talk about vestibular migraine, we ultimately want to figure out the patterning behind it for you. Even if it feels like it's completely random and there's absolutely no pattern, there's almost always some sort of pattern. I help a lot of my patients figure out what their pattern is by them tracking their symptoms and sharing their log with me. In today's episode, I'm sharing what that looks like so you have a roadmap to follow. In this episode, we'll dig into: How to track your vestibular disorder symptoms Examples of common vestibular migraine symptoms Which symptoms you want to track for your vestibular disorder What your neurologist and other providers will want to see What symptoms to track short term vs long term The benefit of having a VM toolkit for attacks What to do to begin your vestibular healing journey Part of living with and managing a vestibular disorder is about understanding your unique situation. Which, yes, includes symptom tracking for the short and long term. It's not possible to ignore your way or think your way out of a vestibular disorder. It's about awareness, intentional actions, and curating the most supportive tools and providers for you. I'm constantly responding to questions in my Ask Me Anything (AMA) box on Instagram about this one topic—from 2 very different perspectives. Helping someone with a vestibular disorder. There's the person experiencing the symptoms of the vestibular disorder. And then there's the person who cares about the person with the vestibular disorder. This podcast is dedicated to both of you. This isn't about getting someone to understand how frustrated and dizzy you feel. Or about making anyone feel bad for the way their brain and body just are. It's about getting people to understand how they can help when you are feeling symptomatic. In this episode, we'll dig into: What you can do to support someone with a vestibular disorder What people with vestibular disorders wish you knew A note on asking for help Common vestibular disorders What is really not helpful to someone with a vestibular disorder How hypervigilance plays into vestibular disorders What it means that a vestibular disorder is a spectrum disorder A big takeaway here is the unpredictability of a vestibular disorder. And the fact that every day is going to look very different. I promise you this does get better—with the right tools. It's not overnight, but with the right tools, consistency, trial and error, and some frustration it does get better. And there are so many things you can do to help someone who's struggling with a vestibular disorder—no matter if it's BPPV, PPPD, vestibular migraine, or Ménière's disease. The range of symptoms and affected body systems in Parkinson's disease is extensive. One area that is less frequently discussed is the vestibular system—the inner ear structure directly connected to the brain, responsible for balance and spatial orientation. When this system malfunctions, individuals may experience dizziness, balance problems and an increased risk of falls, highlighting its importance in your overall health. With aging, the inner ear naturally becomes less robust. Although current research has not yet identified a definitive cause for the higher incidence of vestibular dysfunction in people with Parkinson's disease, effective interventions are available. In this episode, Christopher Taylor, Occupational Therapist at Mayo Clinic, will provide insights into the diagnosis and treatment options—namely vestibular therapy—that can assist with symptoms such as dizziness, gait disturbances, freezing, and postural instability. This discussion aims to enhance our understanding of the crucial role played by the inner ear and its connections. Most people think regulating their nervous system means being calm all the time or doing breathing exercises. It does not. Having a regulated nervous system is not about feeling calm all the time. It's about how you are able to respond to difficult and new stimuli. Because that is a fact of life that's not going anywhere! Nervous system regulation looks like a lot of different things depending on the person. We're going to explore all the things you can do to have a more resilient and regulated nervous system. Your brain is overstimulated and overreacting to a lot of things. It is not your fault. But you can rewire your way out of VM. In this episode, we'll dig into: What the nervous system is in charge of What the emotions thermometer is Why fight / flight / freeze is not a bad thing Why migraine attacks happen Why avoidance or elimination doesn't solve the problem What true self-care is (with examples) How to rewire your brain with nervous system regulation It's not just the symptom—it's your nervous system's response to that symptom that makes it feel like X, Y, Z is causing your life to fall apart. Emotions are not in our control. But we do have control over our thoughts much of the time. Remind yourself this can get better, that you do have a toolkit. Because being in the throes of a migraine attack is scary and unsettling.  The ability—over time and with practice—to identify what you can do to regulate yourself and start to feel better allows your nervous system to become more flexible. Her expertise in developing migraine-friendly cocktails will blow your mind! About KarenIn March of 2019, after 18 months of searching for answersto the seemingly mysterious symptoms Karen had been experiencing, she was diagnosed with Chronic Vestibular Migraine. Post diagnosis, she learned about the Johns Hopkins Migraine Diet through Dr. David Buchholz's book, “Heal Your Headache”, and started to undergo the tedious elimination process to figure out her personal migraine triggers. In May of 2020, during the Covid pandemic quarantine, Karen launched a blog focused on migraine-friendly cocktails for the at-home bartender, Tartt Drinks. This creative outlet, along with an online audience of fellow migraineurs, provided a space for her to explore the cocktails, flavorsand spirits that were missing from the lives of those affected by migraine. Her migraine-friendly cocktails have since been featured in the Bombay Sapphire Artist Showcase, Speed Rack Trading Cards, Dizzy Cook's first book release party, Miles for Migraine Social Events and an upcoming cocktail book. She currently resides in San Francisco, CA and works at Wildhawk in the Mission District. She's currently researching gas chromatography analysis in spirits to more clearly define what makes a spirit migraine-friendly. She's also studying different ways to create more complete citrus alternatives.Karen can be reached for consultations and inquiries at clearspiritandmind@gmail.com.Hosted by:

Patrick shares the inspiring story behind the creation of Vestibular First and the company's mission to develop affordable, accessible tools to support clinicians in providing better vestibular care. Since necessity is the mother of invention, Patrick details the process of building the first prototype of Vestibular First goggles in a single night, leveraging his diverse technical skills and material purchased on Amazon. Goggles are essential in vestibular care for a number of reasons, which Patrick discusses as well as how inaccessible they have been until Vestibular First came to be.  In addition to having goggles, educational tools that help clinicians explain to patients why they are experiencing dizziness and what is actually going on in their inner ear were lacking. Vestibular First has a strong desire for accuracy and accessibility in their education tools and realistic models so you don't need to use your imagination to understand what is actually going on. Throughout the conversation, Patrick's passion for the vestibular community shines through. He speaks of the dedication and unique challenges faced by clinicians in this field, and the immense satisfaction of knowing their work is helping patients regain their quality of life. Vestibular First's story is a testament to the power of innovation driven by real-world needs. By prioritizing affordability, ease of use, and educational resources, the company is making a significant impact in the vestibular rehabilitation space, empowering clinicians and improving patient outcomes. Can you believe it's been 3 YEARS since we first had a conversation with Dr. Shin Beh about vestibular migraine? Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS, and Dr. Danielle Tolman, PT catch up and discuss some new updates in vestibular migraine treatment approaches. About Dr. BehDr. Beh completed his neurology residency training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. His fellowship training consisted of: Neuroimmunology & Multiple Sclerosis, Neuro-otology, and Neuro-ophthalmology. His fellowship training was completed at three centers – the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Johns Hopkins University Hospital, and New York University Medical Center. After completion of his fellowship training, he returned to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center to to set up its very first Vestibular & Neuro-Visual Disorders Clinic. This Clinic was built to help care for the many people suffering from neurological disorders that caused vertigo, dizziness, and imbalance. Initially, he divided his time between multiple sclerosis and vestibular disorders. After realizing there was a far greater need among people with vestibular disorders, he focused solely on this area, and joined the Headache & Facial Pain Program. Where to find Dr. Beh: https://www.vestibularmd.com/ Hosted by:
