The Framestore Podcast, our learning and talent development focused podcast made by Framestore, for Framestore, is back with another brand-new instalment. This time, we're excited to present a two-part special on Imaginary Friends, with VFX Supervisor Chris Lawrence and Animation Supervisor Arslan Elver! Joining us as our guest co-host this week is VFX Training Manager Sergio Gonzalez, who helps us as we dive deep into John Krasinski's latest project, which he wrote and directed. Chris Lawrence's 20-year career has taken him from the depths of outer space to the quiet English countryside, earning him an Oscar win and three further Academy Award nominations along the way. He received an Oscar and a BAFTA for his work on Gravity, as well as Oscar nominations for his work as VFX Supervisor on The Martian, Christopher Robin and The Midnight Sky. Beyond his exemplary supervisory career, Chris also helped establish Framestore's successful Montreal Studio. He served as the studio's Head, recruiting and managing the teams who worked on titles such as RoboCop and Edge of Tomorrow. Arslan Elver, a self-taught animator, specialises in realistic creature movement and creating nuanced characters. He joined Framestore in 2006, working on Underdog, The Golden Compass, and Primeval. His film credits include Where the Wild Things Are, Clash of the Titans, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Byzantium, Maleficent, and Guardians of the Galaxy. After a stint at ILM, where he worked on Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Arslan returned to Framestore as Animation Supervisor for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. A rare 'behind the scenes' look what it was like working on, and supervising Imaginary Friends. In part one, we explore what led both Chris and Arslan to work on IF, their collaboration with writer and director John Krasinski, and the process of bringing the project to life. They also share behind-the-scenes stories from the set, discussing how each character was distinct and the unique animation challenges posed by developing 42 different characters, each with its own backstory. We discuss Chris and Arslan's favourite shots and sequences from IF, highlighting the collaboration with the global Framestore team to bring the project to life, and how "story first" was at the heart of the production process. Chris and Arslan also reflect on their personal journeys into VFX and animation, sharing what inspired them and their experiences working on both live-action and animated films. Enjoy!

“My family had a dude ranch in Colorado,” says Mark L. Smith, as to why he didn't really starting writing scripts until his 30s. “It was 2,000 acres surrounded by a quarter million acres of natural forest. We were literally in the middle of nowhere.” “Our driveway was a 2.5 mile road that was an old stagecoach trail, through a canyon. It was a resort and we were open in the summers, but we would shut down early fall. I found I had nothing to do during those five months in the snow, so I would write.” In those early days, he wrote stories for his children and submitted a few ideas for children's books. Then he took a stab at writing screenplays, did a few workshops in Los Angeles, and then starting to write specs, one after the other. “I just kept going, found my way through it, then got really lucky.” Smith's early films were in the horror genre, movies like Seance, Vacancy, and Vacancy 2: The First Cut. Then, in 2015, he hit global success with The Revenant, followed by Overlord, The Midnight Sky, The Marsh King's Daughter, and The Boys in the Boat. Upcoming projects include Twisters and a new series called American Primeval. “I would option and sell drama. That's where I learned to begin with but I couldn't get anything made. The horror stuff was popping so I tried that. I wrote a couple of those and it became my thing, but it wasn't what I had intended. I think I wrote The Revenant in 2007, so that's when people noticed I could do more than horror.” Want more? Steal my first book, Ink by the Barrel - Secrets From Prolific Writers right now for free. In every way imaginable, this "Naked Lunch" is a moving feast -- and a hilarious one, too. Teen sensation turned successful TV writer/producer Shaun Cassidy gets caught in traffic, and so thus this fun and freewheeling conversation begins with Shaun on the road. Phil, David and Shaun retrace Cassidy's remarkable life and career thus far, from growing up a Hollywood "nepo baby," the son of Oscar-winning legend Shirley Jones and actor Jack Cassidy, as well as the half-brother of David Cassidy, to becoming a stadium-packing "Teen Dream" with big pop hits like "Da Doo Ron Ron," "That's Rock 'n' Roll" and "Hey Deanie," to creating TV shows like "American Gothic," "Roar" and writing in recent years on the popular medical drama, "New Amsterdam." All this, plus Shaun tells a hugely funny story about Andy Warhol and how Oprah Winfrey and his wife Tracey helped set the stage for Shaun to return to the road after three decades for his acclaimed current touring show "The Magic of the Midnight Sky." Shaun also answers a star question sent by Kim Williams Paisley who helped set up this "Lunch," as well as taking a fan call from Monica's younger sister Jennifer Horan. Find more about Shaun at https://www.shauncassidy.com. To learn more about building community through food and "Somebody Feed the People," visit the Philanthropy page at philrosenthalworld.com.

I've spoken to many people in the film business over the years but today's guest is one of the hardest working craftsman I've had the pleasure of sitting down with. Today on the show we have screenwriter, producer and director, Mark L. Smith. If you look at his IMDB you'll see a list of 15 projects at various stages of development. He's come a long way from entering the Hollywood scene some 15 years ago with his fear-striking horror screenwriting and directorial debut, Séance in 2006.Read Mark L. Smith's ScreenplaysMark stumbled onto writing as a hobby during off-seasons at his family's ranch where he worked after college. Self-taught, some workshops and an inventory of specs later, his path crossed Mel Gibson's - who bought Smith's first-ever script written in 2001.From then onwards, he's been credited for successful writing and producing for hits like The Revenant (2015) and Overlord (2018) and The Midnight Sky which was just released in 2020, starring the incomparable, George Clooney. In Overload, a small group of American soldiers finds horror behind enemy lines on the eve of D-Day.While producing his directorial debut horror, film Séance, with friend of the show and veteran producer Suzanne Lyons, Smith was also a writer on Vacancy in 2006. You will hear more in the interview of his experience navigating the world of filmmaking on both sets, as a rookie, and the village of support he received.Vacancy follows the unfortunate adventure of a married couple who becomes stranded at an isolated motel and finds hidden video cameras in their room. They soon realize that unless they escape, they'll be the next victims of a snuff film. After Vacancy, many horror projects started to open up for Smith. He worked those for a while until it felt old and he had the urge to do something different. That's when he co-wrote the revisionist western script for The Revenant with legendary director, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu. The film was based in part on Michael Punke's 2002 novel by the same title. You can watch the remarkable Making of documentary of The Revenant here.Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, and Domhnall Gleeson, the story sets in the 1820s, where a frontiersman, Hugh Glass, sets out on a path of vengeance against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling. The twist and turns that caused delayed production of the film and its eventual success will pique your interest. The Revenant became an instant commercial and artistic success. It grossed $533 million worldwide, earned 11 Oscar nominations, 3 Golden Globe awards, and 5 BAFTA awardsMark recently wrote The Midnight Sky that released last year, starring George Clooney. It is a screen adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton's novel, ‘Goodmorning, Midnight' which is a post-apocalyptic tale that follows a lonely scientist in the Arctic, as he races to stop Sully and her fellow astronauts from returning home to a mysterious global catastrophe.I had an absolute ball speaking to Mark. He's one of the hardest working screenwriters in Hollywood. We discuss everything from The Revenant, genius-level tips on how to adapt a book to the screen to what it was like work with Quentin Tarantino on the Star Trek script that has yet to be made. If you pray, please pray to the Hollywood Gods that Mark and Quentin's Star Trek gangster film sees the light of day.Enjoy this conversation with Mark L. Smith.
Are you ready for a real life Spiritual Adventure ?This podcast is the information I received when meditating and connecting my consciousness with the spirit of Father Time and White Dwarf through the vibration of Midnight Supernova , another member of the Euphoralite family. It details a Spiritual Adventure to help raise the collective consciousness.Unbeknown to me a White Dwarf can turn into a supernova, which I found to be quite incredible. When I researched the information I received in the meditation and it was backed up with information from the Nasa website I was amazed at how closely linked the energy world and the physical worlds are. Science really is marrying with spirituality. I was told , during meditation that a White Dwarf is a union of ancient celestial stars that are dying and that this is when they shine the brightest. Whilst ingesting the light from the celestial energy body I was told to begin a Spiritual Mission of gridding the Earth so that the White Dwarf could use it's 350,000 times stronger gravitational pull to help align the Earth with the lighter dimensions.Ley Lines or Dragon Lines will show the way and help create a more heart based reality. If you would like to join us please email jackie.winters@yahoo.co.uk ref White Dwarf and we can send you details on how to connect in your area, or join us on one of our workshops to unite with us.British Academy of Crystal Healing: Leading the way in Vibrational Medicine https://www.britishacademyofcrystalhealing.comCrystal Classes, Retreats, Spiritual Adventures, Pre recorded videos, free advice, consultations plus much more. “The Midnight Sky is a film with big scopes. We have big vistas, we're in space, we are on the moon, in the Arctic. Also, it's a very intimate film because it's a lot about connection, so we when we see people we get close to them and we feel intimate with them because we are literally with the camera quite close to them and looking into their faces. In this film, it helped that we went on 65mm. We shot on a large format. First of all we started that for the big landscapes, but I think it's great also for faces because the face also becomes like a landscape.”Martin Ruhe is the internationally-acclaimed German cinematographer behind the Netflix film The Midnight Sky directed by and starring George Clooney. In this part two interview with Production Designer Jim Bissell we throw back to "The Twilight Movie". His feelings about designing CGI heavy films like "300" and "Jumanji", working six times with director George Clooney including "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind"and "Good Night and Good Luck". His love of "The Spiderwick Chronicles", designing of a 5 million dollar parking garage for "Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation" and how he basically invented computer PreVis on "The Boy Who Could Fly". He also gives us some great insight into his recent film that he is nominated for an ADG award “The Midnight Sky”
It's been a goal to speak with Jim Bissell since starting this podcast because on my wish list of designers and decorators I wanted to selfishly interview people who inspire me and inspire the world of cinema and tv. Jim Bissel has so many films that I cherish that of course I'm a total dork in this interview. He has a fascinating origin story that put him in the sights of Stevan Speilberg on one of his first films E.T. We talk about comparing his spaceship design from E.T. to The Midnight Sky. He reveals some Easter eggs from ET and The Rocketeer. The magic of trashing the house in Harry and the Hendersons. He won an Emmy Award in 1980 for his work on Palmerstown, U.S.A. followed by a BAFTA nomination for production design on Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. He has a Oscar nomination for Good Night and Good Luck. Three ADG nominations, and the ADG Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015, which.. He's going strong, he might need another one.
Episode 50!! We're so excited to have passed 3,200 downloads as well as many more engagements on Facebook, YouTube and Twitch. Thanks for listening! This episode was week 7 of our "It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)" series where we pair a presumed Oscar nominated film with a presumed Razzie nominated film to recap notable works from 2020. Our "Best of Film" entry is the George Clooney-directed/starring Climate Change space "epic?" The Midnight Sky, available to stream on Netflix. While the film will likely gather awards attention for it's Alexandre Desplat score and it's incredible visual effects and cinematography, does the story keep this film from deviating its course (movie reference)? Our "Worst of Film" entry is The New Mutants, which features incredible performances by it's young stars including Anya Taylor-Maisie Williams and Charlie Heaton. But did the 3 years of studio and production moves end up haunting this film's story? Intro/The Midnight Sky (0:00) The New Mutants (36:20) Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist.
