Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP We're nearing the end of the Giro d'Italia, and it's been a crazy race so far. Jonas Vingegaard's dominating the GC, the sprint stages have been hotly contested by Magnier, Groenewegen, and Milan, and UAE are mopping up stage wins left, right, and centre. With just a few days left of the first Grandy of 2026, it's time for this month's Race Communiqué! That's right, guys, Tom Southam, Luke Durbridge, and I are sitting down for a good old yarn about what's been happening over in Italy for the last few weeks before it all reaches a crescendo this weekend. Whilst it's pretty nailed on that Vingegaard will take home the pink jersey and, with it, a place in the Grand Tour triple crown hall of fame, there's still a hotly contested fight for the podium spots and - more importantly - the best placed Western Australian, with Hindley, O'Connor, and Storer all sitting pretty in the top 10! I raced the Giro twice in my career, and I have some fond memories from the land of espresso, prosciutto, and pretty chaotic racing. This grand tour is always a fan favourite; less mainstream than the Tour, but not as low-key as the Vuelta. But, as always, Southam disagrees; is the Giro actually boring?! He makes his case, but also takes a look at the Unibet Rose Rocket's strategy in this month's talking tactics. They're all in on winning a sprint stage because, as our old DS Klier says; “You can't dance at two weddings at the same time.” In this month's PeloChat, Durbo takes a look at the concussion protocol, and what needs to be changed to better serve riders. This is a real hot debate in the sport at the moment and - after seeing Adam Yates covered in blood and mud battling back into the bunch before a DNS the following stage with concussion - it's clear that it's coming to a head (...if you'll excuse the pun). We discuss the current protocol, and what could be done better to give riders the support they need. As always, we finish up with a CommuniQuiz, and Southam's up to bat as quiz master with a real tricky Giro special edition. I reckon even Coppi, Pantani, and Nibali would have been caught out with some of these questions, so play along at home and see how you get on! Guys, it's smoking hot over in Europe right now whilst I'm cosying up by the fire at the end of Autumn back home in Melbourne. Seeing the riders sweating away in the mountains is making me feel pretty smug - I don't miss that one bit…but then again, a good excuse to knock the top off a few cold ones. Cheers, Mitch Thanks heaps for listening to this month's Communiqué, brought to you exclusively by TrainingPeaks. Make sure you hop on TrainingPeaks virtual next Tuesday June 2nd at 8pm AEST / 11am GMT+ 1 (BST) / 6am EDT to join Southam and I for a virtual ride. Southam's going pretty well at the moment from what I hear, so I'll have to dive deep into the hurt box to try to get one over on him - why not jump on and give me a virtual draft? What is the role of television in the history of the UK? In Race on Screen: Audience Racism in Twentieth-Century Britain (Cambridge UP, 2026) Christine Grandy, an Associate Professor in History at the University of Lincoln, explores how producers, audiences, and television programmes themselves addressed race and racism in the Twentieth-Century. Drawing on a huge range of archival material, the book demonstrates the explicit racism associated with white audiences and TV programming, along with the critical resistance offered by audiences of colour. Thinking through how this history of audience and TV production racism has been forgotten, the analysis is a vital contribution to our own contemporary discussions about race and media, in the UK and beyond. The book is essential reading for arts, humanities and social science scholars, along with anyone interested in the past and future of television. Learn more about your ad choices. Leslie Grandy, author of ''Creative Velocity'', helps leaders unlock creativity when the clock is ticking, the budget is tight, and half the team says they are “not creative.” In this episode, you'll hear how to build creative velocity with AI as a thinking partner, and how to stop innovation getting trapped in silos, expert bias, and status-quo habits. If your organisation wants fresh ideas that actually land with customers and employees, this conversation will give you practical frameworks you can use immediately. [2:44] Why creative leadership stalls in risk-averse cultures, and how silos block innovation from operations, finance, and legal. [3:50] Why embedding innovation across the whole organisation matters more in an AI-driven world . . . not just within product or marketing. [4:07] How to treat AI as a “team member” for pattern recognition, cross-industry insights, and resilient planning. [5:05] Defining “creative velocity” as fast idea generation plus human judgement to ensure meaning, value, and purpose. [6:02] How to apply critical thinking to ideas ... avoiding high-effort, low-impact pet projects and prioritising what matters. Gopher Tells All: Fred Grandy's Love Boat Stories and More!"Fred Grandy—known to millions as Gopher—takes John Cato on a rich, and at times hysterical behind-the-scenes look at The Love Boat. He recounts his unexpected casting, early skepticism from executives (except Gavin MacLeod and Aaron Spelling), unforgettable adventures filming on cruise ships in China and Turkey and his near death burning mishap while shooting The Love Boat. From writing episodes for The Love Boat and working with legends like Don Ameche, Ethel Merman, and Ricardo Montalban, to hilarious pranks involving Leslie Nielsen's fart buzzer and a monkey brains story in Hong Kong, Fred shares it all. He also reflects on his friendship with the cast, the rise of the cruise industry because of The Love Boat, his son, Charlie's Hollywood writing career, and his emotional path from actor to Congressman. LIP BITER SOUNDS with FLOYD WEST22 — EPISODE 39 This one is pure no-rules, peak-hour pressure. Episode 39 of Lip Biter Sounds smashes eras, genres, and dancefloor politics into one relentless ride—classic attitude meets modern club weaponry. It kicks off with Fatboy Slim flipping Rolling Stones legacy into a skanking, hands-up opener before Floyd West22 slides in with an unreleased I.D. that sets the tone: raw, confident, and unapologetically club-first. From there, the mix escalates fast—Matt Sassari, CHRSTPHR, and Callum Hall deliver slick tech pressure, while Disco Lines and Juicy J inject reckless party energy that refuses to cool down. Mid-set, things go darker and heavier. Vintage Culture x Max Styler, Hardwell x Chuckie, and Adam Beyer push the room into full-throttle territory, blurring the line between tech house swagger and techno muscle. Cloonee, BYOR, and Armada heat keep the groove locked while the bass stays unapologetically loud. The final stretch is pure Lip Biter behavior—Karner H's 2025 “Last Christmas” edit catches you off guard, Box Of Cats brings that West Coast bounce, another FLOYD WEST22 I.D. reloads the clip, and Don Diablo plus GRANDY shut it down with no mercy. This isn't a genre showcase. This is energy control. No fillers. No apologies. Just the sound of the club at full capacity. ⚡️Like the Show? Click the [Repost] ↻ button so more people can hear it!
E632 - Shelley Grandy - Devious Web - A bingeworthy mystery thriller through business and politicsShelley Grandy, Canadian author of the tech‑thriller Devious Web, joins the show to talk about her path from journalism and corporate communications into fiction, and how her real‑world experience in high‑tech and politics shaped the novel. Born in Timmins and now living in Trenton, Ontario, Shelley spent years as a reporter and then as a writer in the telecom and fibre‑optics world, eventually running her own PR firm. That background in data, networks, and media handling feeds directly into Devious Web, which follows Tom Oliver, a Toronto tech CEO whose data‑analytics company becomes the center of a dangerous conspiracy just as he's about to sell to a Silicon Valley buyer. The story weaves together business intrigue, family tensions, politics, and a homicide investigation led by Tom's detective friend, with Shelley using interviews and media moments in the book to naturally explain complex technology and U.S. issues like gerrymandering for general readers.Shelley also opens up about the reality of being a debut novelist later in life: finishing the manuscript isn't the finish line, it's the starting gun. She describes the emotional and practical challenges of claiming the title “author,” battling imposter syndrome, and then having to learn social media, build a website, start a newsletter, and get comfortable showing up in public to market the book. For someone used to writing behind the scenes, events like speaking at the National Women's Show in Toronto, experimenting with Instagram, and nurturing an email list are all part of what she calls “The Journey”—the ongoing process she chronicles on her blog. Her training as a journalist still shapes her fiction: she writes in tight, scene‑based chapters that she can easily imagine on screen, focuses on strong openings, and then has to consciously slow down to add colour, atmosphere, and richer description.A big part of the conversation dives into how Devious Web blends entertainment with timely themes. Shelley talks about drawing on her long‑standing interest in U.S. politics—especially the Trump era and debates over democracy—to bring gerrymandering, data analytics, and the misuse of personal information into the plot without turning the book into a lecture. She explains gerrymandering in plain language, connects it to modern data‑driven targeting, and hints at how the wrong hands using the right software could tip the balance of power, all while keeping the focus on mystery, character, and suspense. The book also reflects her personal passions: there's a romantic subplot, horses and equestrian life, Canadian settings she knows intimately (from Toronto restaurants and banks to Honey Harbour and Caledon stables), and vivid secondary characters like Patrick, the charming Irish “bad boy” whose Las Vegas misadventures were especially fun for her to write. Shelley even shares how she fact‑checked locations after the pandemic by revisiting them in person, turning research into a kind of mini‑adventure.https://www.shelleygrandy.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

I know you all think the Tour de France is the best Grandy of the year, but you're wrong. For me, it's all about the Vuelta. The Vuelta a España is the grand tour I started the most in my career, racing 7 Vueltas over the years. It was my first grand tour way back in 2012, and I have really fond memories of racing in Spain. The atmosphere, the culture, the relaxed vibe at the end of the season; I had some hard moments at the Vuelta, for sure, but on the whole it was always a great race for me. I am a massive fan. Speaking of massive fans, it's time to check in with the Race Radio boys, Harry & Stu. They've recovered after their trip to the Tour, and they're back with their old mate Cillian Kelly in tow, bringing you all the stats you could ever possibly need. Here's what the bald bonced bandit Harry has to say about this month's ep: ‘With La Vuelta underway, we thought we'd invite our good friend Cillian Kelly on the show this week. Cillian is TNT's official statman, providing the race commentators with all manner of fascinating facts and curiosities to read out at the grand tours. He shares a few of his Vuelta-related gems with us – including revealing one Merckx-related fact that shocks us to our core – before we go on to discuss strange sprints, how we ‘consume' cycling, and baking bread on the Muur.' I loved hearing the boys yarn with Cillian. If you like what you heard, you can check out their other pod ‘DNF' where Harry, Stu, and Dr Kelly break down some of the wildest statistical gems in the sport. I also spoke to Cillian back in July for a special episode of Life In The Peloton all about the financial stability of pro cycling so if you missed that, get back across and give that a listen, too. Guys, I hope you enjoy this month's episode and the Vuelta! It's maybe the one race I really miss - mainly because I could usually get away with a few pequeña cervezas in the evening. Catch up soon! With candid humor, he reveals how a simple text message to his accounting-minded wife evolved into a thriving business, highlighting the challenges of marital entrepreneurship and the creative problem-solving required to launch a food truck enterprise. What separates Honeybean from ordinary ice cream becomes deliciously apparent as Hunter breaks down the science behind super-premium ice cream (14% milk fat) and his decision to incorporate Arkansas honey into every flavor. Our teenage panel, comprised of Matt and I's daughters, provides authentic, enthusiastic reviews as they sample unique creations like "30,000 Feet" (Biscoff cookie with cookie butter), "Grandy's Medicine" (chocolate named for his grandfather), and "Wild Sweet Williams" (Earl Grey tea with blackberry and dark chocolate).Beyond flavors, Hunter demonstrates the strategic thinking that's propelled Honeybean's growth – from private events to restaurant partnerships to their physical location on 5th Street. His business philosophy of "say yes and figure it out" embodies the entrepreneurial spirit, while his three-day production process reveals the craftsmanship behind each scoop. The conversation illuminates both the technical aspects of premium ice cream production and the heartfelt storytelling that makes each flavor memorable.Ready to experience Bentonville's sweetest success story? Visit Honeybean at 5th and J Street, Thursday through Sunday, and discover why these handcrafted flavors are becoming a Northwest Arkansas favorite. Follow @honeybeanicc on Instagram to track their journey from food truck dream to dessert destination.
Artist Fred Grandy grew up in Oregon with five sisters and one brother. The family also lived in Washington for a time. As an adult, Grandy moved around the country, with stints in California, Louisiana, Kentucky and Virginia. But his last days were spent in Ukraine, volunteering with a group that helped to clear up debris after Russian bombings. His sister, Bend resident Sietska Reed, says he had taken off on an open-ended trip to Western Europe but found himself drawn to Poland and then Ukraine. Reed said her brother felt he was where he needed to be to help Ukrainians in a small but tangible way. Grandy was angry, she said, about President Donald Trump’s embrace of Russia, which invaded Ukraine, and also wanted to represent the many Americans who are horrified by Trump’s actions and demonstrate support for Ukraine’s sovereignty. She says the family was notified last week by the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine that her brother was among those killed in one of the heaviest Russian attacks on Kyiv since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Reed joins us, along with her son Kennith Reed and her brother Jim Grandy to remember Fred and tell his story as they think he would want it told.
Leslie Grandy, a seasoned executive with leadership roles at Apple, Amazon, Best Buy, and T-Mobile, discusses the underestimated nature of creative capability and how leaders can systematically cultivate it. Drawing from her early career in the film industry and later product leadership across Fortune 50 companies, she presents a grounded, practical perspective on how creativity functions in high-performance environments. She outlines three foundational skills transferable across domains: enduring ambiguity with resilience, sustaining momentum in the absence of external validation, and solving unfamiliar problems with resourcefulness rather than prescribed playbooks. These competencies, shaped by years in unpredictable contexts, later enabled her to thrive in zero-to-one product environments at scale. Grandy also offers insight into organizational enablers and constraints for creative velocity. She identifies cultures that treat creativity as the remit of all functions, not just design or strategy, as more adaptive and resilient. Conversely, she cautions against consensus-driven thinking and status quo bias, which she sees as systemic inhibitors. The most effective environments, she argues, reward structured risk-taking and integrate post-mortem learning with equal weight to successes. Reflecting on her time reporting to Steve Jobs, Grandy explains the discipline of brand stewardship and decisiveness under uncertainty. Jobs' intolerance for diluted brand signals, whether in product UX or retail merchandising, was less a quirk and more an intentional design principle. She recounts how even small misalignments, such as offering engraving suggestions on iPods, were swiftly reversed to preserve narrative clarity. The discussion also explores her recent book, Creative Velocity, and its guiding premise: creativity is not a fixed trait but a repeatable discipline. Through structured techniques like the generic parts technique and SCAMPER, she argues that anyone, including those outside “creative” job titles, can develop idea fluency and confidence. She emphasizes the role of generative AI as a tool for exploratory dialogue rather than one-shot answers, calling for greater patience and iterative engagement to unlock its full potential. For senior leaders, this episode surfaces a precise question: Are you designing your organization to perform or to invent? And are you personally equipped to model the latter? Leslie Grandy always wanted to be 'creative', but after discovering that she 'sucked' as a child at piano, painting, drama, dancing and so on she decided (to the relief of her teachers) that it simply wasn't for her. Until she realized, in her corporate career working with visionary leaders like Steve Jobs, that creativity can also be defined as 'the ability to solve problems in novel ways'. And now she helps organizations - from major brands like Starbucks to early-stage ventures - navigate the challenges of innovation. Creativity, it turns out, is not an inbuilt talent reserved for the select few, but a practical skill that anyone can develop with the right mindset and tools. And that's exactly what she provides in her book Creative Velocity: simple, everyday techniques for building creative confidence. She also tackles the role of generative AI, inviting us to see it as a partner that can expand our creative thinking, provided we bring structure and discernment to the process. Leslie also discovered she could have filled a book with what she didn't know about publishing a book, and shares her insights from that journey too. Funny, inspiring, practical, unmissable.
Is the traditional approach to innovation actually creating more friction than breakthrough ideas?Join hosts Chuck Moxley and Nick Paladino as they talk with Leslie Grandy, a digital innovation expert with experience at Amazon, Best Buy, and T-Mobile. Leslie shares why innovation labs often fail, creating two classes of employees and alienating those outside the "creative zone." Drawing from her soon-to-be-released book "Creative Velocity," she explains how viewing failure as a learning opportunity rather than a setback is essential for fostering creativity across organizations.Leslie reveals how an innovation lab's picture frame project at T-Mobile could have sold 10 times more units if operational teams had been brought into the creative process earlier. She explores how lawyers and finance people can be some of the most creative problem solvers when given the right framework and why the biggest myth in business is that creativity is limited to certain roles or departments.Main Takeaways from this episode:Democratize innovation — Innovation labs often create artificial divisions between "creative" and "operational" employees, when creativity should be cultivated across the entire organization.Reframe failure as learning — Successful creative thinkers see failure not as a loss but as a necessary ingredient for innovation and an opportunity to discover what doesn't work.Use generative AI as a creative partner — AI can help explore unconventional combinations and solutions when used with structured creative frameworks, expanding your thinking beyond established patterns.Want more tips and strategies to create frictionless user experiences? Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP You can also watch this episode over on my YouTube channel here! The chaos of the Cobbled Classics is over for another season. From Omloop, through E3 and Wevelgem, Flanders, and then the big one - Paris Roubaix; these are the biggest and best races on the calendar for me, so I was super excited to sit down with Tom Southam and Luke Durbridge to break down this year's edition of Paris Roubaix in this month's Race Communique. This year's Roubaix was an absolute cracker; totally flat out from the gun. Even before Arenberg - where the race used to really kick off back in my day - the bunch was strung out and the real favourites were taking huge chunks out of each other. Tom, Luke, and I run through the riders that really made this race such an epic edition. Of course, it was dominated by Mathieu Van Der Poel on his way to his third victory in a row, but what about Pogačar?! His first go at Roubaix and he's up there rubbing shoulders with the big boys, and I literally mean the big boys; he's ten kilos lighter than most of these guys! Southam made a good point actually; is he going to be carrying some extra timber into the Ardennes that kick off next week? Of course, we also had the women's race the day before. That's something I love about Roubaix; the men's and women's races being on different days means we get a whole weekend of Paris-Roubaix action! What a cool race, with absolute legend Pauline Ferrand-Prévot putting her immense off-road skills to use to become the first French rider to list that big cobblestone since Frédéric Guesdon in 1997. I absolutely loved to see the GOAT herself; Marianne Vos, riding in support of her Visma LAB team mate; for me, that's what makes her a true champion. Obviously, there's been other races going on aside from the cobbled classics. We wanted to talk briefly about the Tour of the Basque country, and for good reason; after a few years in the wilderness, Caleb Ewan is winning at the highest level again. What a move that transfer to Ineos turned out to be! It's so cool to see Caleb getting his hands in the air again, and I think it represents a real shift in mentality at Ineos - who have been looking a bit lost for a few seasons now. Southam was actually down in the Basque country in the car for EF Pro cycling - who knocked out a stage win with young Ben Healy - so he gives us a quick breakdown of the race in this week's Talking Tactics. Healy's win came after a ridiculous 57km solo move, so this month Tom's talking about the art of the solo breakaway. We see these long range attacks sticking more and more these days; with everyone aero optimised and more and more data and information being fed to riders. Southam compared his view from the car to being behind a rider in a TT, and being able to feed him really accurate cues about the course ahead played a huge part in Healy's win. Poor old Durbo got a bit cut off in this month's Pelo Chat, so we rolled it in ahead of the Communi-Quiz! Durbo wanted to talk about race programmes, and how the teams decide who's racing where. Of course, the Spring Classics is a savage block of racing; and plenty of riders don't make it all the way to the end owing to sickness or injury, which creates plenty of headaches for team directors trying to pull together squads at short notice. As always, we wrapped up with the Communi-Quiz. Hosted by Durbo, it's a Roubaix themed ‘Who Am I?'. I've won a stage and the overall at the Tour of Beijing and Paris Roubaix - who am I?.....you'll have to listen to this month's Race Communique to find out. Well, guys, that's the Cobbled Classics done and dusted. The Ardennes are about to kick off to round out a monster Spring of racing which can mean only one thing; the next time I sit down to talk to Southam and Durbo will be in May just before the first Grandy of the year; The Giro d'Italia. (00:00): "Is Disney actually fun and what is the Disney Rash?" - This is correct, but consider adding a question mark after "Rash?" for clarity. (16:59): "Disney workers on strike at disney ranging from janitors to candy makers" - The word "disney" should be capitalized to refer to the company. (27:22): "Will Wallach be offered the Celtics job if Grandy doesn't return next season and does Aaron Rodgers have just 1 season to make the Jets Super Bowl contenders?" - Consider rephrasing this as two separate questions for better clarity: "Will Wallach be offered the Celtics job if Grandy doesn't return next season?
