In this episode, the So Many Sequels crew dives deep into Office Space, the cult classic that made smashing a printer a universal fantasy. As part of their "Party Like It's 1999 Vember" series, they unpack the film's hilariously spot-on take on office culture, from Milton's legendary cake drama to Lumbergh's meme-worthy monotone. The team explores how the movie's absurd but relatable workplace struggles remain relevant decades later, shares behind-the-scenes trivia, and debates whether the iconic printer beatdown invented Smash Rooms. Perhaps no classic episode has benefited more from a “special edition” than Day of the Daleks. Although it tells a solid timey-wimey paradox story, the original version didn't do justice to Doctor Who's No. 1 monsters. They only made three rather diminutive props for the story, and the voices made Lumbergh from Office Space sound good. But when you add some convincing disintegration effects and dub new cries of “Exterminate!” from the incomparable Nicholas Briggs, it really levels up this adventure to the compelling return of the mechanical crowd-pleasers that it always should have been. What does that say about the material, though, that relatively superficial enhancements make such a difference? This bears close examination, so Blinovitch limitation effect be damned — let's go back again to 1972. Don't forget to give your own rating for Day of the Daleks on Spotify! "Yeah, I'm gonna need you to go ahead and come into the office this weekend."~Lumbergh, Office Space 7 in 10 people report feeling micromanaged at work, yet only 3 in 10 managers self-report micromanagement tendencies. Of course, everyone hates working for a micromanager but inevitably, most fall into the same controlling tendencies as their former managers. In this episode, Frank and Ian dive into tangible steps you can take if your boss is sucking the life out of you at work. Next, we examine why managers take this overbearing approach and how you might be part of the problem. Finally, we offer an approach you can take with your manager that gets them to ease up on the reigns and let you do your job with more autonomy.

We are joined this week by special guests Robert and Sheryl Khoo (parents of a co-host of this very podcast) to talk about Mike Judge's TPS-ridden middle-class satire, Office Space! We talk about our experiences working within soul-crushing bureaucracies, and also the surprising upsides of meetings. We consider the case for Lumbergh and the plight of the middle manager, and wonder whether it is possible to earn a living within a capitalist economy without losing yourself in the process. And we evaluate the movie and Peter Gibbons' plight with the hindsight of the ongoing computer science boom, which likely would have found programmers like Peter earning millions and sipping Maui Thais on a beach with Milton.

Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
Anyone who has ever worked in corporate America knows exactly the kind of gold that writer/director Mike Judge struck when he released his 1999 comedy Office Space on the world. But 1999 audiences (who loved films like American Beauty and The Matrix) sure didn't, as the film was a box office flop. A lot has changed in the two decades since we all discovered TPS reports and suffered through the agony of being named Michael Bolton in the 1990s. So, this episode, financial guru and author Kai Yaniz — buy her latest ebook here — joins us to discuss why Office Space is among her all-time favorite films and how she discovered the film that has left the workforce cringing for the past 20 years. That being said... If you could go ahead and give this latest episode a listen, that would be great. Lumbergh will be expecting your TPS report in the morning. Office Space synopsis, courtesy of Fox: Corporate drone Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) hates his soul-killing job at software company Initech. While undergoing hypnotherapy, Peter is left in a blissful state when his therapist dies in the middle of their session. He refuses to work overtime, plays games at his desk and unintentionally charms two consultants into putting him on the management fast-track. When Peter's friends learn they're about to be downsized, they hatch a revenge plot against the company inspired by "Superman III." Many of our favorite movies and TV shows portray jerks at work. From droning Lumbergh in Office Space, clueless Michael in The Office, to sleazy Mr. Hart in 9 to 5, we find these characters so funny because they’re true. It isn’t funny, however, actually working with these jerks. According to a recent study, 75% of workers deal with bullies in the workplace. This has a huge effect on the economy, your workplace, and your health. So, what can you do? Robert Sutton sets out to answer that question in his new book, The A--hole Survival Guide (his book just says the word). His strategies will provide relief to anyone who feels pushed around by a jerk. You can avoid them, outwit them, disarm them, send them packing, and develop protective psychological armor. Finally, at the end of this post, you can see if you might be adding to the jerk population. Nobody wants to lose life hours to a bully. Listen to this episode of the Building a StoryBrand podcast. You’ll preserve your sanity and have a plan of action to deal with that jerk at the office. http://buildingastorybrand.com/59
