Send us a textThe Importance of Authority in LeadershipLeadership is a complex and multifaceted role that requires a delicate balance of skills, qualities, and behaviors. At the core of effective leadership lies authority - the power to influence, direct, and inspire others towards a common goal. Whether you're leading a team, a company, or simply managing your own life and career, authority is an essential component that cannot be overlooked. It's important to note that leadership styles can vary greatly from person to person. Each leader brings their unique personality, experiences, and approach to their role. However, regardless of individual differences, there are certain universal principles that underpin strong leadership authority.here are some common pitfalls to avoid:1. Prioritizing Likability Over Respect2. Over-Reliance on Consensus3. Reactive Communication4. Lack of DirectnessEffective leaders cultivate the ability to be clear, direct, and respectful in their communication. They provide specific feedback, address issues head-on, and clearly articulate their vision and expectations. This directness, when coupled with empathy and tact, strengthens a leader's authority by demonstrating confidence and clarity of purpose. Dr. Laura revisits the topic of toxic bosses with in-depth information about the differences between a difficult boss and a toxic boss. In conducting studies and reading research on toxic bosses for the book she's writing, Dr. Laura has gathered an immense amount of knowledge on identifying, differentiating, dealing with, and surviving toxic bosses. In this episode, she illustrates how a difficult boss is not necessarily a toxic boss and why this difference matters. One of the main differences Dr. Laura points to is that while a difficult boss can be unpleasant to work with, they are manageable and can be navigated. A toxic boss, however, is not a sustainable person to work for as they are incredibly bad for mental health, physical health, and career progression. Dr. Laura breaks down all the ways we can differentiate between a difficult and toxic boss through their personal styles of management, levels of micromanagement, whether they communicate poorly or with dishonest and manipulative intentions, and how it feels when working with them. This episode expands our understanding of toxic bosses and adds more information to our knowledge bank so that toxic bosses can be more readily identified and, hopefully, avoided.“And the biggest difference, really, is that you can find ways to manage a difficult boss, and you cannot do so with a toxic boss. A toxic boss is really damaging to your engagement, your productivity and your wellbeing.” Dr. LauraAbout Dr. Laura:Dr. Laura Hambley Lovett is a work and career psychologist and thought leader on the evolution of work. She has always been fascinated by how work intersects with life and loves to use her expertise to improve organizations and help people thrive. Her passion for taking creative ideas and launching them into successful business strategies led her to start three counselling psychology practices (Calgary Career Counselling, Canada Career Counselling, and Synthesis Psychology), as well as six different business brands offering organizational assessment and consulting services.Dr. Laura is honoured to have been selected as a Woman of Distinction in Canada in 2014 and received a Canadian Woman of Inspiration Award as a Global Influencer in 2018.Resources:Where Work Meets Life™Episode 83 | Managing Your Boss: How to Succeed, Thrive, or Know When to Leave with Mary Abbajay“Managing Up: How to Move Up, Win at Work, and Succeed with Any Type of Boss” by Mary AbbajayDr. Laura on LinkedInWhere Work Meets Life™ on YouTubeLearn more about Dr. Laura on her website: https://drlaura.liveFor more resources, look into Dr. Laura's organizations: Canada Career CounsellingSynthesis Psychology

Every poll I post on LinkedIn about toxic behaviors, micro management comes up as number one. So, I decided to ask why people micromanage. 12,000 votes cast and hundreds of comments later, it's clear this is still a problem and it's extremely demoralizing. Restoring confidence in this situation involves tracking progress and accomplishments, reminding yourself that it's not about you, and managing your thoughts. By tracking your achievements and recognizing your success, you can validate yourself and restore confidence. Reminding yourself that micromanaging behavior is not a reflection of your abilities can also help restore confidence. Managing your thoughts and intentionally choosing positive thoughts can shift your feelings and behaviors. Finally, it's important to assume that the micromanager will not change and focus on how you want to show up in the situation.Takeaways>> Track your progress and accomplishments to validate yourself and restore confidence.>> Remind yourself that micromanaging behavior is not about you and does not reflect your abilities.>> Manage your thoughts and intentionally choose positive thoughts to shift your feelings and behaviors.>> Assume that the micromanager will not change and focus on how you want to show up in the situation.Sound Bites"Micromanaging behavior starts to wear on you and you start to question your own reality." - Elissa ShuckChapters00:00 Dealing with a Micromanager02:24 Tracking Progress and Accomplishments04:20 Reminding Yourself It's Not About You07:47 Managing Thoughts and Feelings10:13 Assuming the Micromanager Will Not ChangeIf you've decided that it's time to leave your toxic workplace, I can help. Micromanaging is a trait that cheats the micromanager and the people being micromanaged of an opportunity to reach their ultimate superior potential. Micromanaging erodes trust, causes inefficiency, cheats people of time and opportunity and ultimately will lead to larger issues that have many unintended consequences.

Micromanagement, while often well-intentioned, can have several negative consequences in the workplace. One major issue is decreased morale and motivation among employees. When workers feel like they are constantly being scrutinized and their every move is being controlled, it can lead to feelings of frustration, disempowerment, and lack of trust in their abilities. This can result in decreased productivity and creativity as employees may feel stifled and demotivated to perform at their best.No one likes to be micromanaged, but that is what happens in most organizations when leaders manage people instead of their promises, says management trainer Eric Papp. His new book, Manage Promises Not People: How to Create a Self-Managing Team, reveals the superpower every leader has, but most fail to use: honoring their word to build trust, drive success and increase their power. He joins the podcast to discuss the negative impacts this can have on your workforce. Today, we will explore the complex dynamics of micromanagement, a common challenge in the professional world that affects both managers and their subordinates. Micromanagement is characterized by excessive control and attention to small details, which can stifle creativity, dampen morale, and hinder productivity, resulting in a less-than-ideal working environment. The purpose of this discussion is to help you recognize the signs of micromanagement, understand its impact, and explore actionable strategies for those who find themselves in the role of a micromanager, as well as for individuals navigating the complexities of being managed by one. Whether you are looking to mitigate your micromanaging tendencies or seeking effective ways to deal with a micromanager, we aim to offer guidance and solutions to overcome this challenge, and ultimately enhance the quality of professional life and organizational success. Welcome back to our Bad Bosses mini-series on the Women Offshore Podcast. From the historical figure of Captain Bligh, known for his tyrannical leadership aboard the HMS Bounty, to more contemporary tales shared by members of our own community, we're exploring the multifaceted nature of challenging leadership in the maritime industry. The following story was anonymously submitted to the Women Offshore Podcast, a platform dedicated to supporting and empowering women in maritime industries. In the interest of confidentiality and to protect the identities of those involved, specific details about the vessel, shipping company, and individuals have been intentionally omitted. The narrative, though anonymized, sheds light on the complexities and challenges faced by women in maritime leadership roles. This account is shared not only to raise awareness about the unique obstacles encountered in such environments but also to serve as a learning opportunity for others in the industry. The experiences detailed in this story offer valuable insights into the dynamics of leadership, teamwork, and communication aboard a vessel, particularly from the perspective of a female Chief Mate navigating a difficult situation with a new Captain. By examining this scenario, we aim to glean lessons that can contribute to a more inclusive, respectful, and effective maritime workplace.Check out the full podcast now.
