A mentally unstable photo developer desires to be a part of a suburban family and his obsession takes a turn for the worst when he develops a family secret. One Hour Photo stars Robin Williams whose performance as a lonely photo developer longing to be part of a family is so believable and unsettling. As someone who brought so many smiles to people's faces, Williams was such a great casting for a role that's so dark, serious, and a deviation from what viewers are used to from him. The movie is very sad, touching on belonging and acceptance, leading to a thought-provoking conclusion. In 2002, Robin Williams was in his era of playing against type with roles in the Christopher Nolan thriller Insomnia, and in this film about a lonely photo minilab employee who becomes obsessed with a young family. Co-starring Connie Nielsen, Michael Vartan, and Gary Cole, this pic written and directed by Mark Romanek succeeded critically and commercially, and it was also the only film that Robin Williams ever recorded a DVD commentary for. Now we're seeing what develops when we take a closer look at One Hour Photo!   Say cheese!   ITHACON 48 is April 5-6, 2025, at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY! One Hour Photo follows Sy, a photo technician, as he forms an obsession with the Yorkin family before taking it upon himself to avenge his shattered fantasy and lost childhood innocence. In the accompanying podcast, Madeleine West shows how Romanek skillfully extends this film's sense of unease into its cinematography and mise-en-scène, delving into the intricate depths of the human mind, exploring themes of obsession, isolation and voyeurism. This podcast discusses portrayals of mental health within cinema while looking towards this film's visuals as a way of depicting isolation and loneliness.

She has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design three times, for James Mangold's Walk the Line (2005), Madonna's directorial debut, W.E. (2011), and for Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). Phillips has also received a two BAFTA Award nominations for Tom Ford's A Single Man (2009) and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Her film career also includes Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals (2016), Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) and Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017), James Mangold's Girl, Interrupted (1999) and 3:10 to Yuma (2007), John Cameron Mitchell's Hedwig And the Angry Inch (2001), Mark Romanek's One Hour Photo(2002), and Milos Forman's The People Vs. Larry Flynt (1996). In between film and music projects, Phillips works as a freelance fashion editor and stylist, collaborating with photographers for publications such as Italian Vogue, V Magazine, Harper's Bazaar, German & Spanish Vogueand W Magazine. She continuously challenges herself by taking on projects that explore new expressions of her creativity. In 2018, she made her New York City Metropolitan opera debut, designing Nico Muhly's opera, Marnie. Miuccia Prada selected Phillips for her Iconoclasts project; to curate installations for the brands flagship stores in London and Beijing which included a short fashion film for the brand, which Phillips wrote and directed, called Passages. Her friend Alessandro Michele, Creative Director of GUCCI commissioned her to create content for a special issue of A Magazine he guest edited and to style a brand film directed by Gia Coppola. She has also collaborated on special projects with Van Cleef and Arpels, Cartier, Valentino and Swarovski. Phillips was an inaugural member of the TIMES UP coalition and was asked by Reese Witherspoon to design its logo. Lawrence Sher, ASC,is an American cinematographer and film director, best known for comedy films such as Garden State, The Dictator, and The Hangover series, frequently collaborating with directors Todd Phillips and Zach Braff.[ He made his directorial debut with Father Figures, which began a wide theatrical release on December 22, 2017, by Warner Bros. Pictures. He was nominated for an Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography for the 2019 film Joker, directed by Phillips. As cinematographer of the 2009 film The Hangover, Sher described how a scene early in the movie shows the main characters on the roof of their hotel overlooking a stereotypical shot of the Las Vegas Strip; Sher indicated that he had tried to evoke the behind-the-scenes Vegas—after the characters wake up the following morning—by shooting a scene behind the hotels where the real action takes place. Actor Bradley Cooper credited Sher's visual style with enhancing the film's comedy, noting how Sher has "a great eye, a lot of energy and he just knows what's funny" and that "Some guys just can't shoot comedies, but Larry knows exactly what he's doing." With the success of Zach Braff's Kickstarter, Sher worked on Braff's 2014 feature, Wish I Was Here. In January 2020, Sher was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on the movie Joker, but lost to Roger Deakins for 1917.

Tune in as Tyler Hewitt (Dumb-Dumbs & Dice) makes his long-awaited return to the program for a review and recap of One Hour Photo, the 2002 film that presents plenty of stalkery suspense and a nostalgic freeze-frame of the antiquated era of photo processing. The masterful skill that Robin Williams shows off in his against-type performance as lonesome photo lab tech Sy Parrish, the numerous times when this movie sneaks in brand licensing, the questionable stab that Matthew McConaughey has been taking at the self-help industry, and the irritation that Tyler expresses toward implausible workplace behavior in the film comprise some of the talking points for this episode. Written and directed by Mark Romanek, One Hour Photo stars Robin Williams, Connie Nielsen, Michael Vartan, Dylan Smith, Gary Cole, Erin Daniels, Clark Gregg, Eriq La Salle, Paul Kim Jr., Nick Searcy, and Jim Rash. Hello, film-loving Dads! Today on Bad Dads Film Review, we're zooming in on some of the most iconic photographs in movie history, exploring a thriller that'll make you rethink your next photo development, and reminiscing about a classic kids' TV show.Top 5 Photos in Movies:Photographs in films can be powerful – they can tell a story, evoke emotion, or even become iconic in their own right. Let's delve into some of the most memorable photos in cinema. Think of the haunting snapshots in The Shining, revealing the hotel's eerie history. Or the poignant Polaroid in Memento, a key piece in the protagonist's fragmented quest. How about the symbolic photo in Blade Runner, hinting at a replicant's memories? Then, there's the unforgettable final scene in Thelma & Louise – a freeze-frame that captures their spirit of freedom. And lastly, the mysterious picture in Vertigo, where a photo sparks an obsession. These images aren't just visuals; they're pivotal pieces of their film's narrative puzzle.Main Feature - One Hour Photo:Our main feature is the chilling One Hour Photo, where Robin Williams takes a stark turn from his usual comedic roles. He plays Sy, a photo technician who becomes disturbingly obsessed with a family whose pictures he develops. It's a gripping thriller that explores themes of loneliness, obsession, and the fine line between everyday life and underlying darkness. Williams delivers a performance that's both unsettling and deeply empathetic, and we'll dive into how this film showcases his incredible range as an actor.Kids TV - Press Gang:Then, for a bit of nostalgia, we're revisiting Press Gang. This late '80s and early '90s show was a gem, featuring a group of teenagers running a newspaper. It's a smart, witty series that tackled various issues, and it's where many of us got introduced to the talents of Julia Sawalha and Dexter Fletcher. While not photography-centered, it's about capturing stories, and we'll discuss how shows like this influenced our understanding of the media and storytelling. So, get ready for a cinematic journey through iconic images, a deep dive into psychological thrills, and a blast from the past with some teenage reporters. It's all happening here on Bad Dads Film Review, where we bring a Dad's perspective to the best (and sometimes the bizarre) in movies and TV!

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 6, 2023 100:53

We've done a lot of deep dives into specific camera brands here on the Camerosity Podcast, but one brand I've been the most excited to do was Yashica.  Some of my earliest acquisitions of film cameras right when I first started collecting were Yashicas, from the wonderful Yashica Electro 35 to the Yashica-Mat TLR, to the Yashica TL-Super, there was probably a time when nearly 20% of my collection was a Yashica. More than that, if you were to break down the entire Japanese camera industry into A, B, and C-List manufacturers with Nikon and Canon at the top, and the hordes of "one and done" Japanese makers from the 1950s in the C-List, Yashica seems to be one company that exists somewhere between A and B. So for this podcast, I really wanted to bring out the big guns and invite not one, but two people who love Yashica more than I do.  The first guest is someone who I've interviewed before on my "One Hour Photo" series, is Paul Sokk.  Hailing from about 90 minutes away from Theo, Paul is THE authority on Yashica TLRs, fixed lens Yashicas, and early Yashica SLRs.  He also has a huge amount of info on Nicca, Leotax, and Canon rangefinders too making his site a very worthwhile read for many collectors. In addition is Chris Whelan who has frequently collaborated with Paul, providing him with information and photographs that Paul has used on his site.  Chris has bought, owned, and sold a huge number of rare Yashicas, even to people you probably know.  Mike personally owns a few cameras that Chris has previously sold to other people, completing some form of Camerosity/Yashica Cycle of Life. In this episode, we focus on the early days of Yashima, their TLRs, early SLRs, the company's acquisition of Nicca and Nicca rangefinders, and touch upon some of Yashica's great fixed lens rangefinders, plus some of their stranger cameras like the Sequelle and Samurai. As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you!  Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show.  We LOVE people who are new to shooting and are interested in having an episode dedicated to people new to the hobby, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, and right here on mikeeckman.com.  We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. We don't yet know what we will be doing for our next show, but we are definitely mulling on some topics suggested to us from other listeners, plus the many different areas in which we interact with you on social medial.  Whatever we decide to do, I am sure it will be interesting and a lot of fun, so be sure to join us on Monday, November 13th for the recording of Episode 59! Today on the show we have Oscar® nominee Jeff Cronenweth A.S.C. Cronenweth worked as a loader and 2nd assistant before graduating high school, and then enrolled in film school at USC where he studied cinematography. Among his classmates were John Schwartzman and Robert Brinkmann, as well as [director] Philip Joanou. After graduation, Cronenweth resumed working with his father, joining a core camera team that included operators John Toll and Dan Lerner, and 1st assistants Bing Sokolsky and Art Schwab.Jeff worked with father Jordan Cronenweth (cinematographer most notable for Blade Runner) as a camera loader and second assistant camera during high school, working his way up to first assistant camera and then camera operator until the mid-1990s.Moving up to first assistant, Cronenweth began working with Toll, who was just beginning his work as a cameraman, and veteran Sven Nykvist."I couldn't have learned from better people than John, Sven and my father,"Cronenweth relates."They were all soft-spoken, but very tenacious in achieving their goals. It was a great experience to watch them, learn set etiquette and see how they delegated responsibilities and dealt with producers and crews. I did six pictures with my father and eight pictures with Sven." [From American Cinematographer Magazine.]The first major motion picture where he acted as a DP was on David Fincher's masterpiece Fight Club. Other notable feature films on which he worked as a DP are One Hour Photo, K-19: The Widowmaker, Down With Love, The Social Network, Hitchcock, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Gone Girl.Enjoy my conversation with Jeff Cronenweth A.S.C.

Director / Composer - Michael Giacchino and Editor - Jeffrey Ford ACE WEREWOLF BY NIGHT'S Michael Giacchino and Jeffrey Ford have had many occasions to work together in the past, but never quite like this.  While WEREWOLF BY NIGHT is Michael's first time in the director's chair for Marvel Studios, he's been the composer on five of their features, two of which were also cut by Marvel stalwart, Jeffrey Ford.  However, this special presentation for Disney + marks their first time collaborating as director and editor. WEREWOLF BY NIGHT begins after the death of legendary monster hunter, Ulysses Bloodstone.  Five experienced monster hunters are summoned by Ulysses' widow, Verussa, to Bloodstone Manor where they are instructed to participate in a competitive hunt to determine their new leader.  The object of their hunt is to retrieve the powerful Bloodstone from an unknown foe. MICHAEL GIACCHINO In addition to his work as composer on WEREWOLF BY NIGHT, Michael has also scored the Marvel features; DOCTOR STRANGE (2016), SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING (2017), SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME (2019), SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME (2021) and THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER (2022).  Outside of the MCU, Michael's work can also be heard on; RATATOUILLE (2007) - for which he won an Oscar®, JURASSIC WORLD (2015) and Taika Waititi's upcoming feature, NEXT GOAL WINS (2023). JEFFREY FORD ACE While Jeff Ford's career has been punctuated by the excellent work he has done in smaller projects such as; ONE HOUR PHOTO (2002), BLOODWORTH (2010) and THE COMEY RULE (2020), it is his impressive and unmatched roster of eleven MCU films (plus THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER and WEREWOLF BY NIGHT for Disney+) for which he is most well known. Remember when taking pictures required the use of an actual CAMERA and how the best way to see the fruits of your labor was to have them developed as PHOTOS?  Well even if you don't, it wasn't that long ago before the age of smartphones – this film actually came out just twenty years ago and features at its center, one unique individual whose job is to develop these pictures for the general public.  His name is Seymour Parrish (otherwise known to others as “Sy the Photo Guy") and he was played by the late, great Robin Williams in what many consider to be among his best dramatic performances.  Running a photo lab at the local Sav-mart, Sy loves his job and is also obsessed with the photos of one particular local nuclear family…the Yorkins who are played by Connie Nielsen, Michael Vartan, and Dylan Smith.  And of course, this obsession takes on unhealthy levels as Sy becomes more involved in the lives of this family.  What results is a tense, little thriller/character piece filled with striking visuals thanks very much to the talent of director Mark Romanek who after years of directing memorable music videos made this his feature directorial debut.Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
