Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Dr. Melvin Rogers, professor of political science and associate director of the Center for Philosophy, Politics, & Economics at Brown University, to discuss his recent book The Darkened Light of Faith: Race, Democracy, and Freedom in African American Political Thought. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump's second would-be assassin, JD Vance's unbridled racism (and the related shutdowns in Springfield, Ohio), the Harris campaign, Boeing's labor strike, Israel's continuing murder of its own citizens, Yemen-Israel conflict, Boar's Head's fiasco, Eric Adam's absurd corruption, and Laura Loomer's budding relationship with Donald Trump, before parsing through JD Vance's claim to have “created” the insane anti-migrant conspiracy around Haitians in Springfield (incidentally, it was actually created by Nazis). Professor Melvin Rogers then joins, first outlining the importance of intellectual history in helping to contextualize the institutions and structures that materially shape our world within the ideas and strains of thought that inspired them, before stepping back to examine the two often contradictory strains of black intellectual thought that dominated how African American intellectual leaders saw the American project's relationship to Black people, be it as a something that is, at its core, about degrading and dominating Black identity, or something that, like all of humanity, is unfinished, malleable, and subject to growth. Professor Rogers then walks Sam through the pre-Civil War evolution of these beliefs, exploring the stories and works of folks like David Walker and Martin Delaney to demonstrate how central the question of the American project was to the push for abolition and Black liberation, with the former presenting a challenge and a disruption to the project while the latter saw it as immutable, best to be abandoned altogether. After reflecting on the model of the American project in the pre-war North, Professor Rogers moves to the post-Reconstruction era, tackling the retrenchment of White Supremacy in the US political system as the resilience of the underlying cultural anti-Black beliefs that the era had failed to address, examining how this issue – one that abolitionists had very much acknowledged – was then addressed by Black intellectuals moving into the 20th century, with folks like Billie Holiday and James Baldwin bringing the contradictions and horrors of American racism to the fore to, once again, challenge the idea of the American project itself, and push white Americans to acknowledge the lingering impact of the ideas that shaped our society. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma quickly parse through the pervasiveness of Eric Adams' corruption and corrosion of New York politics just since he ran for Mayor, before diving deep into the growing controversy around Donald Trump's relationship to far-right activist Laura Loomer, the anti-DEI bigot's refusal to DTR with DJT, and her public beef with MTG where everyone (other than them) won. Trump makes a beautiful snafu, JD Vance tries to address Trump's concept of a healthcare plan by demonstrating his inability to grasp concepts of healthcare itself, and the MR Team discusses Ilhan Omar's reflections on the rhetorical, but materially unsubstantial, divide between Democrats and Republicans over Israel's genocide of Gaza, plus, your IMs! Sex, Love, and Addiction: Healing Conversations for Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Men
Butch McKay, of OASIS and the Positive Living Conference, joins the show today to talk about ways we can reduce stigma and set examples of creating a safe space in the community. Butch is a major force in the work with HIV, has stayed true to a promise he made to a dear friend that he will use every day as a way to help others that suffer. Butch also discusses how the Positive Living Conference started and continues to grow, the groups still most affected by HIV stigma and what we can do about it, and an inside look at how we need support in the legal system more than ever. TAKEAWAYS: [2:26] Butch got involved in HIV work 32 about years ago, as a result of a promise he made to his best friend who was the first person he lost to the complications of AIDS. He became a clinic host, and with Dr. Michael Saag as his mentor, realized this was an area he wanted to spend his energy to help people. [7:30] Butch saw a need for education and services in the North Florida area, and decided to start the Positive Living Conference in 1997. He sought dynamic speakers to speak the science in layman's terms, and advocate Martin Delaney came (for way less money than his usual fee) to educate the audience so hungry for his knowledge. [11:16] This year was the largest attendance, with 457 people registered to attend. They have also had as high as 27 states represented in the past, with countries such as Canada and Mexico in the mix. 97% of the attendees are living with HIV and AIDS, and the others are experts or partners. They have also been known as a training ground for speakers, and are proud to be a safe space for people to speak their voice. [18:34] It is quite miraculous in the past decades of where we have come medically, but stigma is still a major problem. [19:16] One of the hardest groups still affected by stigma is heterosexual women. [22:30] Those affected with HIV unfortunately still experience unfair sentences in legal matters, along with bails too high for themselves or their families to afford. [25:54] The largest population of African Americans live in the south, and that is an area where stigma and religion play a role that leads to a large number of people being impacted with a lack of resources. [27:17] Butch would like to see more education and sensitivity in the community towards those with HIV, along with proper training for public defenders so they can better represent their clients. RESOURCES: Dr. Michael Saag Positive Living Conference OASIS Project Inform The AIDS Memorial U=U QUOTES: ● “We did a lot of things in those days, it was called survival.” ● “It’s so good to know that we have come so far and we have to think of the sacrifices of the people that gave everything, including their lives.” ● “Stigma is very real, but I do think a lot of it is internalized now.” ● “We can all play a part in educating those around us, and ourselves as well.”

"The Civil War is sometimes called the Second Haitian Revolution. For over seventy years pro-slavers feared Haiti, and the enslaved and abolitionists found great hope from Toussaint Louverture and Haiti. Marvin T. Jones details the actions of enslaved and abolitionists who were encouraged by the Haitian Revolution, Haiti’s own involvement in offering freedom to people of color. And, why Haiti was so important to keeping alive the hope that all Americans would be free. American leaders who wrote, spoke of and acted due to their admiration for Louverture include John Brown, Martin Delaney, Gabriel Prosser, Frederick Douglass, Charlotte Forten, William Lloyd Garrison, Prince Hall, John Mercer Langston, Wendell Phillips, Senator Charles Sumner, Denmark Vesey and David Walker. Many African Americans today are descended from all who saw Haiti as a guiding light. Marvin T. Jones, a documentary photographer and filmmaker, is the executive Director of the Chowan Discovery Group, a research, documentation, preservation and presentation organization. Among the CDG's accomplishments are five documentaries, seven North Carolina Highway Historical Markers, the funding of community organizations, a stage presentation, several articles, hosted conference panels, lectures and an award from the North Carolina Society of Historians. Early in Marvin's career he documented Haitian forts for UNESCO. Please visit www.chowandiscovery.org.

As I mentioned in the show last week, I've been doing a stack of interviews recently, and as two of them were from actors in the same movie, I though the Geektowners might like an extra show this week (the normal Geektown Radio will be out on Tuesday as usual). :) Britain has been crying out for a film that truly reflects the society we live in; just when many have become disillusioned with the lack diversity in film, along comes the British Comedy Amar Akbar and Tony. Rez Kempton (Amar) and Martin Delaney (Tony) play two Londoners who come from different communities and join together in friendship sharing life’s ups and down along the way. A Sikh, a Muslim and an Irish Catholic take stock of their lives in contemporary London in Atul Malhotra’s coming of age romantic comedy. The 1970’s Bollywood classic ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, about three brothers separated by circumstance, has inspired the title of this British film about three friends driven apart by circumstance. The Gist of Freedom Preserving American History through Black Literature . . .
Dating from its origin, the Negro press printed the names of black informants,Freedom's Journal listing those of Moses Smith, formerly of Baltimore, and Nathan Gooms of New York, in its issue of November 7, 1828. The mere appearance of these names in the columns of the weekly was a sufficient deterrent to die other informers whose identity the editors threatened to reveal. When Martin R, Delany was editor of The Black Underground Dr. Martin R. Delaney, founder of the Pittsburgh Mystery in 1842 and later was co-editor of the North Star. In August 1858 two runaways were betrayed by John Brodie, who had promised to assist them in returning to Covington, Kentucky, to effect the liberation of relatives. Brodie's treachery nearly cost him his life. He was seized by a group of Negroes, who proceeded to give him three hundred blows with a paddle, a stroke for each dollar he was supposed to have received from the slave-catchers. Only the presence of the influential Henry Highland Garnet saved Brodie from further punishment. The badly mauled informer delivered himself to the police authorities, to be placed in jail for safe-keeping
The Gist of Freedom Preserving American History through Black Literature . . .
Join The Gist of Freedom as we present The Black Abolitionists featured in Benjamin Quarles' book, Black Abolitionists. In our first of 13 shows, Preston Washington and host Ty Gray-El will discuss chapter one; Anti-Slavery Movement Prior to The Revolution; Organizations, Churches, Colonization- John B. Vashon, Martin Delaney, Bishop Richard Allen. Vashon paid the bounty for blacks held by slave catchers. Kidnappers received great rewards for kidnapping blacks in the North and enslaving them in the South. This was especially true after the original Fugitive Slave Law of 1792, was revised, The Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. The federal Government deputized vigilantes and paid bounties for the capture of alleged "Runaways". In one instance, Vashon gave shelter and employment to a young man after purchasing his freedom. Vashon was a friend of the abolitionists Martin R. Delany and William Lloyd Garrison, The Liberator, in Pittsburgh.
