In this episode, we dive into Jasper et al. v. Quarles (1808), a landmark Kentucky land dispute that sheds light on the challenges of frontier settlement. In the late 1700s, settlers like Andrew Jasper worked hard to improve and claim land in Pulaski County, only to face competing claims from military land warrants granted to Revolutionary War veterans. This case captures the struggle between early settlers seeking new opportunities and the lingering impact of war-era land policies.https://linktr.ee/Kyhistorypod

Join us in this One on One interview with Robert Ellsberg and author, Melanie Jones Quarles, as they discuss "Up Against A Crooked Gospel: Black Women's Bodies and the Politics of Redemption". Get your copy today at https://maryknoll.link/cid Drawing upon her grandmother's personal struggles with physical "bendedness" and the narrative of the bent woman in Luke 13:10-17, Melanie Jones Quarles engages Black religious thought and cultural criticism to expose how the Black Church paradoxically nurtures Black women while also sustaining their oppression. Quarles mines the prophetic imaginations of influential womanist thinkers, crafting a liberating vision that resists serving as surrogate "saviors" in society and religion. With insights into politics, Christology, and biblical interpretation, this book boldly calls Black women to unbend their bodies and reclaim their moral agency in the face of crooked systems that attempt to constrain their freedom.Melanie Jones Quarles is a womanist ethicist, millennial preacher, and intellectual activist. She is assistant professor of ethics, theology, and culture, and director of The Katie Geneva Cannon Center for Womanist Leadership, Union Presbyterian Seminary. A third-generation ordained Baptist preacher and sought-after lecturer, she is a leading millennial Black religious scholar.

The Sermon on the Mount is widely recognized as the heart of the teaching of Jesus of Nazareth. Although almost 2000 years have passed since Jesus uttered these words, they remain as relevant today as when the Savior's lips first breathed them. One author described the Sermon on the Mount this way: “After nineteen hundred years the Sermon on the Mount still haunts men. They may praise it, as Mahatma Gandhi did; or like Nietzsche, they may curse it. They cannot ignore it. Its words are winged words, quick and powerful to rebuke, to challenge, to inspire. And though some turn from it in despair, it continues, like some mighty magnetic mountain, to attract to itself the greatest spirits of our race (many not Christians), so that if some world-wide vote were taken, there is little doubt that men would account it ‘the most searching and powerful utterance we posses on what concerns the moral life.'”[1] The Sermon on the Mount does express the ethic of the Millennial Kingdom, but it also applies to all of God's people at this moment in history. The righteousness described in the Sermon on the Mount should be the goal for the character and conduct of every believer today.[2] “Although the Sermon on the Mount may drive sinners to seek God's forgiving grace, the sermon was intended to be a description of the effects of God's transforming grace. Believers should recognize that the righteousness described in the Sermon on the Mount is not attained through mere human effort. On the contrary, this amazing righteousness is progressively produced in Jesus' disciples through the expression of God's saving power.”[3] [1] (Hunter, 1965) [2] (Quarles, 2011) [3] (Quarles, 2011)

In this podcast episode, Gary interviews Emily Stedman, a partner at a major Midwest law firm, who shares her path to partnership and her dedication to helping lawyers manage stress and achieve a balanced life. She discusses overcoming self-doubt, anxiety, and imposter syndrome and stresses the importance of mental health practices like therapy and meditation. Emily advocates for open dialogue on well-being in the legal community and underscores the need for law firms to support mental health initiatives. The episode offers insights into maintaining professional and personal well-being in the demanding field of law. Born and raised outside of Atlanta, Georgia, Emily Logan Stedman has called Milwaukee home since June 2013. She obtained her B.A. cum laude (Spanish and History) in 2008 from Wake Forest University. Next, she taught 5th Grade in Buckeye, Arizona, as a 2008 corps member with Teach for America. In 2010, she enrolled at the University of Mississippi School of Law, graduating in 2013 magna cum laude and having served as Editor-in-Chief of the Mississippi Law Journal. From 2013-2016, Emily clerked for Judge Pamela Pepper, now Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. In 2016, she joined Midwest Big Law as an associate at Quarles & Brady. Since November 2020, she has worked at Husch Blackwell, where she is a commercial litigation partner within the technology, manufacturing, and transportation strategic business unit. It was joining Big Law that brought on an increase in anxiety and low mood in Emily. After seeking solace with colleagues, therapy, and meditation, she began talking more openly about the need to improve well-being in the law. This started with programming while president of the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Wisconsin, then as a committee chair for the Wisconsin Taskforce on Lawyer Well-Being. Most recently, she has built a platform on LinkedIn and now Twitter/X, where she posts regularly on the realities of being a Big Law attorney and the need to destigmatize lawyer well-being.
