Oh man we are SO back! By which I mean back to the Mirror Universe, simultaneously this show's least favorite and favorite place to visit depending on which host you're listening to! In "Despite Yourself" the Discovery crew needs desperately to blend in to figure out if there's a way for them to get out of this land of impossible doppelgangers and fascist fashion without losing themselves on the way! Also this week: an unfortunate trope, obvious in retrospect, and Malcolm Reed! Let's take a trip back to 1994, when Chris was 13 (Mark was 7), and he was busy creating custom Headswim t-shirts around Stirling while discovering the brilliance of that band's debut album. The album in question was "Flood," and it left a profound impression on Chris. While we often discuss the albums that have influenced us, it's uncommon for us to bring one of these into the Unsung spotlight. So, let's dive right in: On this album, Headswim was a grunge band, with added psychedelic influences, haunting Faith No More-esque keyboard elements, and occasional Black Sabbath riffs. The record showcased a band brimming with genuine potential. In a music landscape saturated with grunge acts imitating Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, or Alice in Chains, Headswim offered a surprisingly refreshing alternative. However, their trajectory took a turn. Following the tragic loss of a band member's brother, they made a comeback in 1997 with their second album, "Despite Yourself." Although it received some comparisons to Radiohead at the time, the majority of the album epitomized the generic indie rock sound of the late '90s. And that was essentially the end of their journey. Apart from a single released in 2000 titled "Dusty Road," the band gradually faded into obscurity. That is, until the recent re-release of "Flood" in 2022. So, the question arises: Is this album a forgotten gem or merely another grunge record best left in the past? Tune in and discover the answer!

Culber. One of the highlights of the first season of Star Trek: Discovery was the show's kind and compassionate doctor, Hugh Culber. We see these aspects of his character repeatedly as he tends to his shipmates. When Commander Landry suffers severe injuries in “The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry,” he still fights to save her. He also cares for his partner, Paul Stamets, on multiple occasions, pulling him through seemingly impossible odds, and he accurately diagnoses Ash Tyler's Klingon augmentation. The latter leads to his death, but his compassion and professionalism shown through to the very end—and beyond. In this episode of The Edge, host Amy Nelson is joined by Hayley Stoddart of Standard Orbit to discuss Hugh Culber's role aboard the USS Discovery, his relationship with Paul Stamets, and whether it will continue into season two despite his death in “Despite Yourself.” We also explore his possible existence within the mycelium network and ponder whether there is life after death. Star Trek: Discovery Season 1, Episode 11 – Debuted Sunday January 14th Written by Lisa Randolph Directed by T.J. Scott Kayla and Brian sit down to discuss an exciting follow up to “Despite Yourself” which sees our heroes stranded in a strange dark universe where all Vulcans have fantastic facial hair. “The Wolf Inside” was packed full of plot development, much like the previous episode, even if the “surprises” it had in store were anything but. We were finally treated to a couple of big reveals, which is good fun, but really, where the episode shines is in between the manufactured shock. In particular, Shazad Latif delivered another absolutely stunning performance as Tyler — er, Voq — er, Voqler? Sonequa Martin-Green also offered a top notch performance as her character is dragged through some incredibly emotional turmoil. Burnham is taken nearly to her breaking point having to live and lead in the Terran Empire. Tyler was her last tether to normalcy, but even that was taken from her. Still, she upholds her Starfleet values and saves the lives of many innocent rebels fighting against the Terran Empire. A group, she believes, is a glimmer of hope in this otherwise desolate universe. Of course, her plans are cut short by the return of a fan favorite.

The Mirror Universe. When we last saw Discovery, a spore drive malfunction had thrown the ship to an unknown region of space—at least it was unknown if you had not been paying attention to the many clues leading us there and had never seen Star Trek before. The second half of Star Trek: Discovery's first season opens, unsurprisingly, in the Mirror Universe—or at least in a mirror universe. In this episode of Notes from The Edge, in which we deep-dive into connections between Star Trek: Discovery and the broader Star Trek universe, host C Bryan Jones shares his thoughts on this turn of events and characters developments, delves into some of the connections to the greater franchise—including a rather obscure one—and explores the Mirror Universe and how “Despite Yourself” connects to what we've seen before (and how maybe it doesn't). Voicemails and more thoughts on "Despite Yourself"! We've had a few days to cool down, and reflect a bit on that shocking twist in the last episode. 9:41 Eric from Pennsylvania (@aerialbass) agrees with Wade, in that he can't decypher what Hugh and James want from the show.  Hugh and James reiterate what they think Discovery's problems are, and how your hosts can better talk about the show is discussed. This goes on for a while. 39:35  Lane, who is definitely a real person, shares his worries about the tone of the show and who the "New Redshirts" might be.  Is there room for the tone to get lighter and trend more towards Star Trek Ideals?  James and Hugh disagree on what's possible for some of the characters. Wade is assembling his army to tell James and Hugh they are wrong! Despite Yourself. After eight weeks of speculation, the answers are finally here! Trapped in an unknown region of space, the USS Discovery is attacked by a Vulcan ship. The crew soon learns they have jumped to a parallel universe in which the Federation has been replaced by a sinister organization known as the Terran Empire. Meanwhile, in sickbay, Stamets is recovering from the effects of his last spore jump and Ash Tyler is concerned that the Klingons may have done something more to him than physical torture. In this episode of The Edge, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Guinevere Liberty Nell of The Briar Patch and Suzanne Williamson of To The Journey to discuss the first episode in chapter two of Star Trek: Discovery's first season. We also discuss writing tropes, the Mirror Universe, Jonathan Frakes, and Captain Killy. Lorca is a fugitive in this universe, and although he captained the Buran as he did in the prime universe, was never captain of the ISS Discovery. Instead, Tilly is the captain, and she has earned several nicknames for her command, including Captain Killy. Who’s Got a Secret? We learn more about the Tyler/L’Rell situation, and it gets really complicated, while we lose a valued member of the crew as a result. Get in your feedback! Zach loved the episode and started buying into Lorca as a “good” Starfleet captain rather than the manipulative leader he has seemed to be in the past. We were both glad to see Captain “Killy” Tilly play such a central role, and finally get some information about Ash/Voq!

Star Trek Discovery – Season 1A Roundtable Star Trek Discovery returns on January 7th, but we return a bit early for a Season 1a roundtable, discussing the first nine episodes of Season 1. Joining Adam and Brian are Mark Des Cotes of Solo Talk Media and my former co-host of The Walking Dead Talk Through, Ruthie Rink! Bittersweet Announcement We begin the episode with an important announcement about this podcast. Unfortunately, Adam has decided to step down as co-host of the podcast. This is his last episode for the immediate future, due to other commitments that make it difficult to do this podcast. It’s sad to see Adam go. He’s been a big reason for the podcast’s success, and this podcast wouldn’t be where it is without him. However, I am pleased to announce that the new co-host is Ruthie!!! Ruthie and I have been podcasting together for over three years. She’s as big of a Star Trek fanatic as Adam and I are, and she loves this show. I think you will find that the quality of this show will not skip a beat, and since this podcast’s format is based upon the format of The Walking Dead Talk Through, we probably won’t be changing things much. You can still listen to Adam on The Nerfherder Council podcast. Submit Your Feedback for S1E10 Despite Yourself! Please get in your feedback for S1E10, which is titled Despite Yourself, by Monday, January 8th, 6 PM Eastern/5 PM Central, by going to the Feedback form, or by joining our Facebook group and posting your feedback in the designated feedback thread!
