Before the era of the DCP, film projectionists were essential to the movie theater experience. Adrianne Jorge first started her career as a projectionist when she moved to New York in the 90s. Once she was able to join the union through the help of another establishes projectionist, Adrianne would go on to work at film festivals and landed a regular gig projecting films for Woody Allen in his private screening room. After the era of digitization shattered the movie screening industry, Adrianne was fortunate enough to transition and eventually return to her craft working at the Sommerville theater in Boston. While being a film projectionists today is considered a niche job, it's a calling to a time where the human element was still very much connected to the film viewing experience. This week I spoke to New York Times journalist and author of Blood, Sweat & Chrome, Kyle Buchanan. He reports on pop culture and writes the NYT awards season column, The Projectionist, which he took over from the late great journalist David Carr. Prior to joining The Times in 2018, Kyle was a senior editor at Vulture, where he covered the movie industry. Appropriately, he gives advice on writing and we talk about the craft of interviewing, creating safety in conversation, connection, movies, returning to theaters, and the upcoming Oscars. And of course, we talk about his new book on Mad Max and the process of writing an oral history. If the bars of Eastern Los Angeles could talk, the tales they would tell of me and the two Kyles (Buchanan and Kinane). Kinane, as you might know, and I moved to LA from Chicago together. Back in the early 2000s, we bounced around drinking our way through LA with writer Kyle Buchanan. It was a fun, fun time.
