Listener feedback on some recent podcast topics, and a brief recap of two court decisions that embarassed the City of Winnipeg, opens Episode 36. This first segment points towards follow-ups in upcoming episodes- such as the alarming delay of an ambulance in St. Boniface. Those may become more commonplace if the City rams through proposed bike lanes. Marty also speaks about the passing of longtime family friend Norman Freedman, who contributed so much to our city as a social worker, volunteer and community leader. 17:39 - It's the first TGCTS interview of the 2023 provincial election! Last week Marty ventured to a fundraiser at the Pony Corral to meet a Progressive Conservative candidate poised to try to do the unthinkable- break the NDP hammerlock on constituencies north of the 53rd parallel. Listeners will hear Sports Minister Obby Khan prime the enthusiastic and multi-ethnic crowd with a distinctly non-partisan message about the Conservative's efforts to woo voters in the 16 remote communities of Keewatinook, and then hear from the candidate himself. 25:18 - Michael Birch is a newcomer to politics but no newcomer to making things happen. Birch brings voters a resume featuring an extensive background in business development, working with First Nations communities. As the Tories look to open a new northern front in the seat-by-seat battle to win the election, Birch says, "We're not going in this to lose!" In a fast and fun interview, he describes his platform of reforming the "welfare dependent state" and creating economic prosperity in those remote communities by expanding mining operations. Birch also reveals his secret weapon- a campaign team that once dislodged an NDP deputy premier. Marty assesses the Tory campaign tactics in light of polls showing a neck and neck race- do they improve the chances to upend the NDP and inch towards re-election? ** Chip in this week to ensure more great election reporting ** - Online via paypal.com/paypalme/MartyGoldMedia 38:49 Part 2- Two items under the Crime tab you'll want to hear about: 1) A listener sent along a link to a TV news story about Premier Stefanson's commitment for increased public safety funding for downtown. He figured Marty might have some observations. Sure thing! How was the headline for the video misleading? Hear why the true nature of the extremist group that Winnipeg newsrooms love to platform is hardly "grassroots". 2) Marty reads aloud an online commentary by a River Heights property owner who has had to call the cops 15 - fifteen - times this year. "I agree with all the cameras they are putting downtown … it's about time! But that does nothing to help Osborne Village, West Broadway, Wolseley, Crescentwood, etc." She went into specific shocking details you won't believe- police response was rare and when they did show up, removing the problematic criminals was not their priority. And this wasn't about loitering- the cases included church, garage and car break-ins, a wanted murder suspect, and a vandal toting around a giant hammer. "I am thoroughly disgusted with this neighbourhood and this city. The crime in River Heights/ Crescentwood is rampant!" At the end of the episode, Marty notes who her city councilor is- John Orlikow. A few observations are voiced about Orlikow denouncing a court ruling that will costs taxpayers $5M in damages to Gem Equities. While bureaucrats he was pressuring "were aware their conduct was unlawful and likely to cause harm to the plaintiffs", do the facts back up his claim that his ethics and conduct in the scandal were above reproach and the court got it wrong? In coming episodes, listeners will hear the judge's findings about Orlikow quoted directly from her ruling, and more comments about the case - from a former city hall insider. ********** - JOIN OUR FACEBOOK GROUP https://www.facebook.com/groups/TGCTS - To sponsor podcasts / contribute support by email: martygoldlive@gmail.com

This month on the Brews Less Traveled Beer Club Podcast, host Brian Hatheway and co-host Mike explore the craft beer scene of San Diego, California. We continue our travels in this not-so-lesser-known beer city with Mikkeller Brewing, an international brewery. This brewery has announced they are shutting down their San Diego facility at the end of 2022. We are happy to have some of the last San Diego-brewed beers from Mikkeller, their Bah Hum Bock and Henry's Holiday Cheer! In this episode, Brian and Mike become quite the dynamic duo! These two go through the Mikkeller beers of the night, highlighting the famous can art and “Henry” character created by artist Keith Shore. They run a round of not-so-rapid fire questions and dive into Mike's hay days as a YouTube star. Finally, Brian recounts how San Diego helped in the Brave Noise Movement. Information on the Brave Noise Movement and the AntiSexist, AntiRacist, ProEquality Beer Club is also highlighted. You can drink along with us from the comfort of home! Caroline Bird was only fifteen when she had her first collection of poems published; she’s been writing since she was eight, hiding in the corner behind her bunk beds at home. This was in Leeds, where Caroline was brought up, the daughter of playwright Michael Birch and theatre director Jude Kelly. She’s now published six collections of poetry, along with a clutch of plays for theatre and radio. Her latest poetry sequence “The Air Year” was awarded the prestigious Forward Prize for the best collection of poetry published this last year. In conversation with Michael Berkeley, Caroline Bird talks about the impact of being published as a teenager, and about the depression that led her to drug addiction by the time she was a student. She confesses she finds classical music without words almost unbearably emotional – as a child, it made her deeply sad. Understanding that sadness and coming to terms with it, she returns now to music she heard when she was young, going as far back as the music her mother played to her in the womb. Music choices include Rachmaninov’s Sonata for Cello and Piano; Janet Baker singing Elgar’s Sea Pictures; Billie Holiday; and Lionel Bart's Oliver! Produced by Elizabeth Burke A Loftus Media production for BBC Radio 3

Michael Birch sold his social networking site to AOL for $850M....and then bought it back for $1M years later. (buy low, sell high. boys and girls). His business portfolio is impressive. He's an early investor in companies like Calm and Pinterest, owns two giant hotels, and bought a private island off of Richard Branson. Despite all that success, he's a down to earth guy, and in this podcast he talks through his early struggles and failed ideas before he had his billion dollar breakthrough and reminisces his days being head to head with Zuckerberg. Mark Cummins is the co-founder of Pointy, a startup that helps local retailers get their products online. Retailers just plug in a Pointy device, and the complete contents of their store is displayed online automatically. Previously Mark co-founded Plink, a visual search engine company that was the first UK-based company acquired by Google in 2010. Mark spent several years at Google post-acquisition, working on the Visual Search team. Mark was the first person in the UK to sell a startup to Google, when he sold his previous company Plink, which now makes up a huge part of Google image search. Mark and Pointy have some interesting backers like Paul Allen of Microsoft, the founders of Google Maps, Draper Associates and Matt Mullenweg from Wordpress and Michael Birch of Bebo. Mark's co-founder Charles Bibby also designed the security system for London Olympics in 2012 Pointy allows independent retailers to bring their inventory online through their unique device. He's got some great figures on how the "Retail Apocalypse" is overstated and how bricks and mortar retail is growing. Pointy is reimagining search, creating a database of all of the world's offline products that gives your average bricks and mortar store more of a foothold in the fights against Amazon. Pointy has the ability to create the largest system of distribution warehouses in the world too as a result.
Visiting an artist’s studio is a precious gift, and visiting the studio of fiber artist Michael-Birch Pierce is a special kind of awesome. His studio, in an old warehouse on Mayo Island in the middle of the James River, is a sensuous experience. Crystals and sequins sparkle from every surface, and sumptuous fur, velvet and lace are piled in every corner. Michael-Birch uses these materials in his work, using his background in fashion design to exquisitely craft sculptural pieces that challenge to viewer to think deeply about the identity that we wear. At the same time, Michael-Birch recognizes the courage of vulnerability as a way to claim who we are and connect authentically with others. Michael-Birch’s lush and revealing work is a part of the current costume and textiles exhibition at The Valentine, Our Hearts on Our Sleeves. The brilliant Kristen Stewart, curator of the show, joined me in his studio for a joyful conversation about art.

Music man Michael "Flexstyle" Birch is here with us tonight-- you might know him from OverClocked ReMix. He has a healthy respect for Rayman and Ace Combat music, so he's all right in our book, but he still must overcome the oceanic quiz segment we cooked up for him. So water you waiting for? Dive in! (Our deepest apologies for that.)
In this interview, Michael Birch reveals what happens when you sell your startup and the things to avoid. He talks about dealing with lawyers, the valuation process and what he has learnt from Bebo.
The view from the top of business. Presented by Evan Davis, The Bottom Line cuts through confusion, statistics and spin to present a clearer view of the business world, through discussion with people running leading and emerging companies. This week Evan's panel of business leaders hail from the worlds of social networking and retail. He challenges them to cast their minds forward and imagine how the Web will look by the year 2020. What will have changed? Will bricks and mortar matter any more, or will everything be in the cloud? They also consider the value of storytelling in business. So many brands these days seem to have a story to tell - but what business benefit really is there in a good yarn? Evan is joined in the studio by Michael Birch, internet entrepreneur and founder of social networking website Bebo; Laura Tenison, founder and managing director of maternity and babywear retailer Jo-Jo Maman Bébé; Justin King, chief executive of supermarket chain Sainsbury's. Producer: Ben Crighton.
